EA announces Dead Space for Wii, hints at MotionPlus support

Riccitiello had previously hinted at the title obliquely in a July VentureBeat interview, saying "Go look at Dead Space and imagine playing that game with a wand and a Nunchuk. If they improve the precision, then you could have a good experience," in reference to the MotionPlus peripheral. In a portion of the call following his mention of Dead Space, Riccitiello said that EA is "taking great advantage of [Nintendo's] new hardware addition with Motion Sensor [sic] and what that's going to give us is the kind of gameplay we think is going to rival Nintendo on their own platform."
At this point, we don't know if the Wii game is an adaptation of the original or a new title in the series, nor do we have a release date. We'll let you know the details as soon as possible.

I just divided by zero...
Nytemare @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:32PM
Me too man, me too. WTF is EA thinking!? I loved this game so much, and now they have to go and do this!
*sigh*
TwEE @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:35PM
Now you'll never be able to play the original again Nytemare. I hear ya.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, Ultrastiq Revolutionary) @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:46PM
yeah, how dare they bring a game critics praised to a larger audience. Fuck 'em all.
Cody @ Feb 3rd 2009 8:06PM
"EA announces Dead Space for Wii"
Oh. EA DOES like money. Other developers and publishers should follow suit and stop pissing away $$$ with minimal return on 360.
PSN: slycooper_rocker (The Agent of Orange) @ Feb 3rd 2009 8:23PM
by the sound of it, it seems more like another title in the universe rather than a straight port. it would give them more flexibility with the wii hardware and the rich backstory would make it entirely possible.
SoulBlade @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:21PM
"Go look at Dead Space and imagine playing that game with a wand and a Nunchuk. If they improve the precision, then you could have a good experience,"
At the expense of complexity and graphics. Someone should show him that zombie game.
Maverick Saturn @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:22PM
Whats it called again....dead something....
TwEE @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:26PM
Resident something I think.. maybe Biohazard.
Longhorn4Life @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:27PM
umm Super Mario Galaxy??
Maverick Saturn @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:40PM
That has zombies in it? Is that unlockable?
lasersanchez @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:28PM
Yes, it will lack the sheer complexity of an RE4 clone despite the fact that RE4 plays on Wii just fine. Yes, it will lack in the graphics department, but I don't think we'll miss out on much else.
jynxycat @ Feb 3rd 2009 8:36PM
Dead Rising. The game that's missing the entire point AND the graphics.
Wiinterfang @ Feb 4th 2009 1:26AM
I think it was Four resident Hazard.
Comtar @ Feb 4th 2009 5:46PM
I admit Dead Rising is a joke on the Wii, but the Resident Evil 4 engine on the Wii ran well, and had alot of enemies at one time. Just not to the degree Dead Rising should have. There is never a point in Dead Space where it has anywhere near the amount of enemies Dead Rising has, in fact there are more times Resident Evil 4 on the Wii has more enemies then even Dead Space has. Will the graphics be any good on it? Maybe, depends if EA uses it's powers of money to buy some technology from the Conduit guys. But if you expect this to look as brilliant as it did on PS3 or 360 it won't.
I just find your statement a little obvious, no it won't look like the original Dead Space at all, but it could look good depending on what resources the developers decide to use. But if EA just stamps a generic Dead Space title out to make cash... I won't have any part of this game either, and I loved Dead Space.
Brodo @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:22PM
This is sick. Just Sick. Its gonna sell better on wii than on any other console too. And it will feature reggie as the main character
Heyyou27 @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:24PM
I hope they do a good job, but I can't imagine the game being as scary as the original with the major graphical limitations imposed by the Wii hardware.
Chris Are @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:06PM
I don't know man. RE4 scared the shit out of me at times. Dead Space was definitely scarier, but I don't think that was because of the graphics. It was the sound, the clunky controls present in every survival horror, and the possibility that the baddies could come from ANYWHERE.. And the fact that I couldn't fucking change weapons while running.
God that game pissed me off. It's still in my top 5 though. :-)
jorojoserojas @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:16PM
I would say that the scariest aspect of Dead Space was the audio. The sounds were what really set the environment into one of dread and suspense.
I play my 360 and PS3 games in 5.1 surround. The Wii can do Pro Logic at best. For me, the audio would obviously be hindered - but for people who DON'T play using a surround sound setup, the audio may be far more comparable between the different builds, thus more or less equal.
The graphics in Dead Space were good and all, but it didn't impress when compared to, say, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, or even Prince of Persia's artistic style. It might be just fine on Wii. I wouldn't judge it too quickly.
Now it's up to the devs to actually put a little bit of effort into it.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, Ultrastiq Revolutionary) @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:35PM
If they can make good use of the Wii Remotes speaker (Battalion Wars 2) and not misuse it (Twilight Princess) it could still have the audio factor
t_m @ Feb 4th 2009 9:39AM
it might depend on your expectations.
If you've already played it on a 360, or if you are used to crysis on a PC, then it might be a jarring change.
But if you are only playing on a Wii then its not going to matter in the slightest.
I can still quite happily play old games, though it does take a short time to adjust to the aged graphics. I tend to find that once i get sucked into the game, i no longer notice any graphical limitations...
Suichimo @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:24PM
I've got a message for EA. Go and look at Capcom. See what they did with Dead Rising. Get as far away from that fucking idea as possible. Now, go look at what they did with MHTri. Go with a plan like the one used for it.
Haggard @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:41PM
To be fair there's nothing that really requires PS3/360/PC hardware in the game (physics have been done fine on last-gen), but don't expect it to be pretty.
I'd reccomend this to my Wii owning sister but, I don't think she'd make it past Chapter 3.
intro94 @ Feb 4th 2009 1:51AM
ok the game isnt out yet.We scream omg no camera super nes graphics and moan and thats alright i owned the 360 one(and i got a wii too):and what if they make good money?would all that fanboy moaning mean anything?absolutely nothing.Heck, what if the game is actually good too??.Money talks. So they game isnt out yet, i was ,like it or not, hyped so we cant say it failed in past tense.ANd if that game sells well?then more of a reason of EA to launch Deep space. It was the success of 3rd party games on the wii last year that is tempting those companies to finally deliver PS3 type of games on the wii AS well as the bunch of nintendo first party titles.
TwEE @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:24PM
Matt (whatever his last name is) over at Ign was hinting at this and some other announcements recently..
forestofdeath @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:57PM
Matt Cassimassinsessens...sorry--blacked out there. >_
SoshiKitai @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:25PM
Wait.... what?
I'm not exactly sure how this make sense.
The pure glory of Dead Space was the atmosphere, and the high graphics more than helped it. ...it wasn't just about the gameplay.
It'd make more sense to put Halo on the Wii than this.
..... Conduit, is what all of you were gonna' say, right?
Mr Khan @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:46PM
Actually i was going to say Metroid Prime 3. If there was one game Dead Space reminded me of, it was the section of Metroid Prime 3 on the gutted Federation ship.
Alex @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:03PM
No,
Actually I was going to say "cheese poofs"
Foetoid @ Feb 3rd 2009 8:00PM
HD graphics are nice to look at, but i wouldn't think they'd make a game scarier than the Wii version. I remember back to playing the AVP games and being scared shitless of an alien jumping out of the darkness at me. This game is going to be amazing. They'll see what High Voltage are doing graphically, maybe even license the same engine, and we'll have a great looking Wii game with far better FPS controls than dual-analog. Day 1 purchase for me!
SoshiKitai @ Feb 3rd 2009 11:13PM
Never meant the scare factor. I meant the atmosphere.
Dead Space was beautifully realistic (though the aliens coulda' used some work)... what with the great music and great design of each area, all those combined to make Dead Space a masterpiece in artwork!
I was much more impressed by the "art appeal" in Dead Space than the actual gameplay.
It just felt like a really darn well-made movie, where the story wasn't that amazing - but the sets, effects, and musical scores made it a masterpiece.
I'm sure they could still make some beautiful works with Wii's graphics, but I just wonder why can't they just create a whole new game instead of just making another Dead Space. Y'know, to better match the Wii's capabilities.
pkpk523 @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:26PM
Sold my wii over a year ago for a decent little profit because no one in my family was playing it. Then, about 6 months ago, when we signed up for cable, they gave us another one for free. It has literally not been opened as no one in the family has had the urge with the ps3 and 360 around to take up gaming time. The point? A quality game, done right, could be just what the system needs. Dead Space is an excellent game. If handled correctly, these suspense/horror games could be wonderful on the Wii. I don't have the highest of hopes, but I'm hoping to be proven wrong.
Triscuit @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:58PM
Hey, could I have it? I actually can't afford a Wii.... And I would really like to have one. I love Nintendo, and I love alot of the games that come out on their systems, but I can't afford to buy a Wii. In fact, I'm still operating on all last-gen consoles. Xbox (1) and Gamecube. And even if I could afford one, I can't find them. It kinda sucks. So, can I have yours?
Triscuit @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:59PM
Ok, why is my avatar not showing up.... I forgot to mention that I do custom artwork on consoles and such, and commissioned art. So I could pay you that way.
pkpk523 @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:25PM
@triscuit
well, i'll be honest with you, the only reason i didn't put the sucker up on ebay already was to hold out and hope for better games to make it worth my while. i figured me getting a second one for free was a sign from the gaming gods that we were supposed to have one.
you should check into comcast cable in your area. i signed up for cable and internet through them and they gave me a wii, no strings.
Hyams @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:28PM
Dead Space: Dismember 'til You Drop.
ice~ @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:38PM
Not quite as catchy huh? And as a strong Dead Space lover / Wii disliker.....this is not a good idea in my book
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:06PM
Let me guess.
No Armor LVL 7
No other monsters than the Leapers.
Pistol only
Final Destination.
DBuck_Eye @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:07PM
Dead Space: Dismember 'til December
Roto13 @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:30PM
I hope it's actually a new game. Even though I'm not interested in Dead Space, watered down Wii cash-ins make me a sad panda.
Shadsy @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:18PM
It'll be dismemberment minigames.
OmegaVader @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:34PM
It's a prequel.
Chris Are @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:11PM
I'd be okay w/ that as long as they put some effort into it- unlike that terrible movie. That thing wasn't even worth downloading illegally.
Eggman @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:34PM
Awesome, Wii owners get to experience one of last year's best games. If it controls as well as RE4:Wii except allowing for moving while shooting, we'll have ourselves a winner.
I really don't get the whole, "it wouldn't be as scary on Wii" thing. The texture-work and look of the necromorphs wasn't anything spectacular. They were scary and intense because of the situations used. There's never all THAT much action going on in the game either. The only thing I can think of would be reducing the amount of freefloating debris. Really though, it's not like a new player wouldn't be creeped out all to hell if they played Silent Hill 2 or 3 now. They don't look nearly as good as stuff does now but they were made with such flair and reverence for the idea that it shines through anyway. Dead Space is the same way.
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:34PM
I've played the demo of DS, and I failed to see anything that couldn't be pulled off on Wii, pretty graphics aside.
Come on, we're not talking about the game which requires immense amounts of resources as a major feature and the main part of the gameplay(Dead Rising and it's fuckload of zombies).
ronald.raygun @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:34PM
heh, just noticed the mask ... funny
Chris Are @ Feb 3rd 2009 7:12PM
haha! good catch. these joystiq guys are so witty. :-)
Banners @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:37PM
The PC controls were horrendous, at least on my machine - either with WASD or a 360 controller. Shouldn't they patch that first?
LordZombie1 @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:37PM
hmm i recall seeing a commercial for dead space with with the wii logo under it..that was most likely a mistake...but seeing it beeing confirmed now well I don't mind if the wii gets more surival horror games..
...Jan... @ Feb 3rd 2009 6:38PM
Well, the 360/PS3 versions ran off the Godfather engine apparently. Which, there is a Wii version of (And actually pretty good graphically and control wise). But I hope they optimize it instead of forcing it into it, like Capcom with the Resi 4 engine. Either way, I'll love using the pointer for aiming instead of analog.
I didn't expect this. What's next? Bioshock?
