EA: Quality up, but Q309 earnings 'below' expectations

Net loss for the quarter was $641 million, $150 million below street estimates and far from last year's $33 million loss in the same period. While much of the performance can be attributed to macro economic situations (read: the crappy economy), EA admits that a "significant proportion relates to our own performance." So, getting operations in line with revenue is an important step – to that end, EA will be laying off 11% of its workforce (up from the previously announced 10%) and closing 12 facilities – "resulting in approximately $500 million of operating expense reductions in fiscal 2010 as compared with our previous plans," said EA CFO Eric Brown.
EA seems eager to give up on fiscal '09 altogether, pushing the year's three remaining titles – Sims 3, Godfather II, and Dragon Age – into the next fiscal year, while announcing a litany of new sequels, a new Wii-centric focus, and a new marketing strategy. Maybe next year will be more lipstick, less pig, eh? But EA's still got another ugly Q4 to struggle through. Chin up, big guy.

Crying over nothing? did you read the article above you or are you just commenting based on the title?
"Net loss for the quarter was $641 million"
And it was quite clear after the closure of some of their studios.
Anyway, this is rather sad to hear after all the effort that EA has been putting into quality this generation. I don't want Mr. Riccitiello's (Chris fix his name on the article, heh) focus on quality instead of quantity to be in vain, they don't really deserve it :(
Ihavepants @ Feb 4th 2009 12:24AM
Your Logic= Anyone who disagrees with you must be a Sony fanboy.
For the record I constantly think you're an idiot and the only consoles I've ever owned have been the SNES and DS.
You said they were crying over nothing and the article says they lost $641 million. Does that make it look like you read it?
ice~ @ Feb 4th 2009 12:24AM
Mirrors Edge wasn't shitty, it was just average
And how is he being "assholic". He just pointed out that they ARE losing money. Your the one who seems to be a little "assholic". And what makes him a fanboy all of the sudden?
Markez (Rubberband Banjo till Death) @ Feb 4th 2009 12:28AM
Is it still cool and 'in' to rip on holier than thou EA?
Just checking.
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Feb 4th 2009 12:49AM
No actually that now belongs to Nintendo for "ruining" the industry.
Frickard @ Feb 4th 2009 12:30AM
Do you mean Q308? I don't think Q309 has passed yet >.
Frickard @ Feb 4th 2009 12:31AM
Sorry for the cyclops emote... >.
WorMzy @ Feb 4th 2009 1:21AM
Just for reference, use < in the future, it safely makes a <
Use the < key and the result is it gets treated as an open html tag bracket.
Annoying, I know.
Christopher Grant @ Feb 4th 2009 9:57AM
This is their fiscal year, which runs from April to April. They just announced their Q309 earnings.
Frickard @ Feb 5th 2009 3:08AM
Ya, I just figured that out yesterday =/ Forgot that their industry doesn't follow the calendar year. Thanks for the tips!
Deadpool @ Feb 4th 2009 12:32AM
It must be that time of the month. Or maybe FFXIIIAngelVanille doesn't feel....you know....fresh.
But seriously, they lost a crap load of money. They're just sugar coating it with "safe talk" so they don't make themselves look like they're in bad shape. Simple as that.
Noshino @ Feb 4th 2009 12:34AM
"Nope sony fanboy i read the article."
A) You didn't read it
B) You read it,but didn't understand a word of what was mentioned
"Yeah they lost money but even then Im really not sure believe them or if I truly feel bad"
oh, so you finally admit that they indeed lost money? and how is it that you don't believe them? this isn't any PR announcement, this is their quarter reports, good luck lying about them..
"Mirror's Edge was a shitty game so that didn't deserve to do well."
You say the same about every game that is a PS3 exclusive and/or multiplatform but with the PS3 version having some extra features, so Im not surprised.
"However other than that I didn't really see anything to signify that EA was doing terribly...."
Then you are blind, it was clear all this time, they closed developers, Boom Blox flopped, Dead Space and Mirror's Edge selling less than expected, seriously, to not have seen this coming you must really be blind
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Feb 4th 2009 12:46AM
Didn't EA acquire some studios last year?
EA has really done a great job in delivering quality titles last year and made some of my favorites. If you look at the massive amount of games they publish it really is staggering. Dead Space, Mirrors Edge, Skate (I & II), Rock Band Franchise, Madden, NBA Live, NHL, Tiger Woods, Need For Speed Undercover, Lord Of The Rings Conquest, NCAA Basketball & Football, Fifa, Facebreaker, Mercenaries 2, Boom Blox, Left 4 Dead, Command & Conquer, Battlefield Bad Company, NASCAR, Army Of Two, Burnout Paradise, Mass Effect, The Orange Box, Spore & The Sims.
Maybe some of those were in 2007 but that's not even a comprehensive list of all their franchises.
Bioware, Blackbox, Criterion, Dice, EA Canada, EA LA, EA Montreal, Tiburon & Pandemic are all developers wholly owned by EA.
I know that EA used to have a stigma attached as doing nothing but churning out sequel after sequel. I really think they have done a fantastic job of not only releasing franchises we all love but also coming out with new titles that are genre defining.
The gaming industry is not recession proof. We have seen studios close, EA close studios and cut staff, Sony cutting jobs and even MS cutting jobs and liquidating studios. When you see the biggest of the big dogs getting affected you know it's coming for all of them. The only company that might be immune right now is Nintendo because they have a completely different modus operandi.
Dave @ Feb 4th 2009 12:49AM
It's still a pig.
HyperNexus @ Feb 4th 2009 12:57AM
Well, as much as EA deserved some good revenue for their laudable efforts at making quality titles this past year, the world doesn't always work that way. It's a shame, but that's life I guess.
War Machine @ Feb 4th 2009 1:14AM
Quality may be up, the games they have now are far better than before, but a shinny, polished turd is still very unappealing.
WorMzy @ Feb 4th 2009 1:24AM
If they lost secuROM, they'd sell more. But they won't lose secuROM, therefore I have no sympathy.
Ihavepants @ Feb 4th 2009 2:02AM
Yes they have, through Steam at least. It's where all my future EA purchases are going (and would anyway because I always prefer to buy through Steam)
WorMzy @ Feb 4th 2009 8:47AM
While that's a leap in the right direction, as far as I know, secuROM is still bundled onto the installation discs; and here in the UK they haven't started selling through Steam yet.
LegendaryRedass @ Feb 4th 2009 8:19AM
Re: FFXIIIAngelVanille's comments. Why would EA, as you put it, cry and over-exaggerate their losses? The whole idea is to put as good of a spin on it as possible. When a company like EA has a bad quarter it's stock tends to drop, losing money for shareholders. Your statement that EA is trying to make their situation look worse than it is, is beyond rediculous.
ScottG13 @ Feb 4th 2009 8:34AM
As a shareholder, I'm not thrilled, but as a gamer I like where EA is going. They're establishing quality franchises. They probably can't "exploit" each one of them every year like Actitard wishes to, but most can probably be serviced every couple of years with good DLC in between.

I feel so bad for EA, they're trying so hard and they're doing so well with making their games better, but they're doing worse than when they just pumped out sequel after sequel. I just hope they stay the course because quality games are probably gonna help in the long run
Christopher Grant @ Feb 4th 2009 9:58AM
Hear hear!
yojimb0 @ Feb 4th 2009 3:47PM
Mirror's Edge was an excellent game, well, well above average. It was simple, elegant, and high minded, as well as stylish and innovative in its tone and gameplay. It's neither shitty nor average.
