Online game rental service GameFly has purchased Shacknews and its related websites, including FileShack. Shacknews announced GameFly plans to maintain the sites and even bolster with "additional resources." With an understanding that recent takeovers of beloved editorial institutions haven't gone so well, GameFly's co-founder, Sean Spector, states that the rental service isn't "looking to twist and turn the site into something else."
It's certainly an interesting move for the rental service to buy an editorial outlet and talk expansion, especially in this economy. Then again, GameFly's business doesn't seem to be hurting, as it continues to expand its rental service with a new distribution center in Seattle. In the words of a very wise book: Don't Panic.

8$ game rentals from Hollywood Video are also pricey. Choose your poison I guess =/

Is Gamefly associated with Netflix in any way? Or do they just use the same business model?

Loosely associated, in that I think they cross-market with each other, but they're separate business entities I believe.
The last two movies I got from Netflix both had Gamefly advertisements on the throwaway part of the mailer.
Also, Max Payne? Worst. Movie. Ever. I could not believe how horribly, horribly awful it was.

are we talking Spiderman 3 bad?
also, that's unfortunate to hear. The trailer made it seem like it would be fun to watch

Yeah I also thought it looked watchable.
Another bad movie to avoid at all costs is that 10,000 BC movie. It was terrible. A great movie that you have to watch at any cost is that new Eastwood flick called Gran Torino.

Maybe they can do what Gamestop does and give some type of premium subscription to the website as an incentive. Just throwing it out there.
