GameFly purchases Shacknews
Online game rental service GameFly has purchased Shacknews and its related websites, including FileShack. Shacknews announced GameFly plans to maintain the sites and even bolster with "additional resources." With an understanding that recent takeovers of beloved editorial institutions haven't gone so well, GameFly's co-founder, Sean Spector, states that the rental service isn't "looking to twist and turn the site into something else."
It's certainly an interesting move for the rental service to buy an editorial outlet and talk expansion, especially in this economy. Then again, GameFly's business doesn't seem to be hurting, as it continues to expand its rental service with a new distribution center in Seattle. In the words of a very wise book: Don't Panic.

It's good to see GF making enough money to invest in themselves. I always worry about them just shutting down.
BigD145 @ Feb 4th 2009 12:24AM
Are you sure they aren't trying to force Chapter 11 Bankruptcy?
Peter Moore @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:20PM
I had to bump down my GF subscription from 2 games to 1. $25 a month is price, man. :(
Peter Moore @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:20PM
It's also pricey.

Whoa I didn't realize it was that spendy.
Balls.

8$ game rentals from Hollywood Video are also pricey. Choose your poison I guess =/

GameFly's co-founder, Sean Spector, is a guy who really knows where his towel is.

Is Gamefly associated with Netflix in any way? Or do they just use the same business model?
Markez (Rubberband Banjo till Death) @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:45PM
Loosely associated, in that I think they cross-market with each other, but they're separate business entities I believe.
The last two movies I got from Netflix both had Gamefly advertisements on the throwaway part of the mailer.
Also, Max Payne? Worst. Movie. Ever. I could not believe how horribly, horribly awful it was.
Strategy_Panda (Pot & Spoon 4 Life) @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:49PM
are we talking Spiderman 3 bad?
also, that's unfortunate to hear. The trailer made it seem like it would be fun to watch
Einhanderkiller @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:55PM
Worse than Spider-Man 3.
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:57PM
Yeah I also thought it looked watchable.
Another bad movie to avoid at all costs is that 10,000 BC movie. It was terrible. A great movie that you have to watch at any cost is that new Eastwood flick called Gran Torino.

Maybe they can do what Gamestop does and give some type of premium subscription to the website as an incentive. Just throwing it out there.
Einhanderkiller @ Feb 3rd 2009 10:56PM
They do. It's called Mercury.

isn't shacknews the place that used to have quake news and mods and such way back when? if so, i haven't heard from them in forever.
B @ Feb 4th 2009 2:50AM
This is like Ebay buying up Skype. Ok maybe not that assbackwards but what on earth would they do with Shacknews?
Paulmichael @ Feb 4th 2009 6:40AM
So, I'll be receiving my premium FileShack account when? :)
Michael @ Feb 4th 2009 11:36AM
I wish they would spend the money to increase the amount of available games. They seem to have the shipping times down (for me at least with a shipping center local), but the amount of games they have seems to be really small.
alu @ Feb 4th 2009 2:51PM
surprising to see what used to be shugashack mostly about quake, doom, and UT 10 years later being bought out.. i guess it's good for the owners if the original founders are still even there.
