Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings includes unlockable Fate of Atlantis [update]
62
LucasArts has released the first screens of (the Wii version of) Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings. While they may not look as great as the obviously pre-rendered trailer, the new Wii/PSP/PS2/DS adventure has an intriguing feature list that may help us look past the jaggies-plus-bloom combo.
The game's "Hot Set" environments are "completely interactive," full of objects and features that can be used as weapons. Staff of Kings also features action sequences allowing players to "fly a biplane in a canyon trench, take the reigns of a wild elephant through the streets of Istanbul and navigate a raft down a raging river." The biplane sequence, along with a tank battle game, is even unlockable as a four-player minigame! Even the main game allows for cooperative play.
The Wii version, of course, uses the Wii Remote to control the whip, for both fighting and environmental interaction. The PSP version apparently contains six short-session "burst gameplay" modes, which sound like individual challenge levels.
But, really, who cares about this game: you can unlock the classic adventure game, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis! We aren't sure which systems have the unlockable game; the official website doesn't specify, so maybe it's all of them!
[Update: We've heard back from a rep at LucasArts, who tells us that "The Fate of Atlantis will be on the Wii version only." Sorry, DS gamers. We know ... the stylus seems perfect!]

I think this is bigger news than some might understand. Lucasarts is bringing a port of one of their SCUMM games to the Wii (and even better, it's bundled with the new Indiana Jones game). From day one, fans of the old SCUMM games have wanted this to happen, because lets face it, the Wii is perfect for the point and click adventures that were so successful in the nineties on the PC. If Indiana Jones on the Wii is successful, who knows what other oppertunites might present itself:
Maybe Full Throttle 2 finally gets finished and released on the Wii, with a port of Full Throttle added as a bonus.
Maybe we get a new Maniac Mansion game, with the original or Day of the Tentical added as bonus content.
Maybe Lucasarts sees an oppertunity to releasing it's classic SCUMM based titles on the Virtual Console. And if those are successful, maybe Activision/Blizzard decides to reach into their Sierra vault and start releasing their point and click adventures: Kings Quest, Space Quest, etc.
The end result could be an explosion of classic point and click adventures that would expand the Wii's library with titles that would not be as successful on Sony or Microsofts systems; and in the console wars, every little advantadge is important (well, except to people like me who own all three consoles).

I agree this is a major step forward for the Wii. I really think this is the beginning of major studios cutting back on 90% of development for the 360 and the PS3 and going full throttle on the Wii. Its good for the industry because its obvious by the sales that gamers don't care about graphics this generation. So I expect Microsoft and Sony to step up their 1st party games because third party is no longer finding them profitable. They are getting tired of hardcore gamers pettiness and will market and develop for gamers who really care about the medium like Wii owners because they buy!

Although Lucasarts has the rights to those games, their sequels would be nothing without the original genius behind them: Tim Schafer, and he's busy with Double Fine making Brutal Legend.

Wasn't the 'Staff of Kings' something you made with the Horadric Cube in Diablo 2 so you could open the gateway to Tal Rasha's tomb in Act II?
....
That may be the geekiest sentence I have ever written.

I'm gonna buy this JUST so I can play Fate of Atlantis on my Wii. It's my most favorite PC game of all-time. I don't care if the Staff of Kings sucks, I'd pay $50 just to get Fate of Atlantis!

"burst gameplay" because pausing and playing in small bursts on the PSP is apparently way too complicated for some. the reason the DS has so many short and simplistic titles.

I am excited about this new Indiana Jones games - I played the old PC games and got hours of enjoyment from them. However, I was majorly disappointed that the unlockable Atlantis title won't be included on the DS version. :-(
