That's good. I can think of maybe 3 Wii games that are worth a full $50.

Ah denial, a Nintendo apologist's best friend.

Seriously, outside of Mario Galaxy, Brawl, and MP3 (oh and maybe TP, when it was released) what games are actually *worth* $50? Boom Blox is easily my favorite Wii game and I spent a full $50 on it when it launched...and I still think it should have only been $40, max.

@Baby

You do realize that whether a game is worth it's price is entirely opinionated right?

Protip: Mr. Kahn may feel that there are games that are worth its price on the Wii that you don't agree with. That's the magic of opinions. They differ from person to person.

"game prices have been moving upward in this console generation. $59.99 is the new base price for console games"

N64 games were regularly over $60 a piece. And that was in the mid to late 90's.

Back in the NES and SNES days, games regularly cost me $60-70. Most likely that was just a case of local retailers being a bunch of price gouging dicks after getting burned on the home console market's crash.

I never paid more than $50 for an NES, SNES or N64 game...
Maybe with inflation, but a $50 dollar price has been standard for as long as I can remember.

Yes, I remember PS1 games being $49.99 max whereas many newer releases of N64 games were $59.99. I'm sure the main reason for the price increase is the higher cost to manufacture cartridges vs CDs???

The problem is is that the games that actually do matter on the Wii are still going for $49.99, and because of my own economic situation(work Perdium at a hospital is not enough money) alot of the games I actually do want on my Wii, are just too expensive.

Pfft.

Prices for the Joystiq Gold Club passes have come down in '08 to $40.

I'm willing to sell my Joystiq Platinum Club pass for $60. But analysts speculate even that price will be too high in '09.

Lol economy...

I don't think this is unusual. Current gen prices have been around the $60 mark. For a while, last gen titles been around the $30-$40 mark. Wii development costs SHOULD be lower given the older generation of hardware and the established Gamecube development tools that are used for the much of the development. A lot of Wii games share art and design assets with their PS2 brothers. We shouldn't accept $30 PS2 games and $60 Wii games with roughly the same specs + waggle. The only problem is when the rare Wii game has a lot of development investment in it and it can't demand a $50-$60 price point because of so much $20-$30 product.

Sure, wii games are cheaper at launch, but Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Brawl, MPH are ALL still $50 while on the 360 Gears of War, Rock Band, Assasins Creed, Guitar Hero 3, Burnout Paradise, The Orange Box ALL had significant price decreases since launch, all around $20-$30 now.

That's because the Wii is still sold out almost everywhere. Why drop prices if sales are still high?

If Nintendo and other Wii Game makers want to keep 2-3 year old games at the original MSRP it's fine by me, it is their loss.

I vote with my wallet and right now I've been voting PS3.

Heck Wii game prices is why I bought a PS3. There is so much fun to be had with the PS3's beautiful games which cost as little as $10 (what I paid for new Orange Box, Stranglehold & Assain's Creed).

It's only natural with that much shovelware. In fact lots of games get released at a 19.99 price tag in order to compete in such a flooded sea of shovelware.

UMMM... hah, games prices HAVE NOT risen with time. If you take into account inflation, then they're a hell of a lot cheaper now than ever. $39.99 would suprise me now as a median.

The Wii would be selling even more games if they were cheaper. (kind of obvious i know). Gamers are used to paying $50 for a game, but most people are used to paying $20 is for DVDs or CDs.

I can't help but think that it must be a shock for a new wii owner to find they have to pay 1/3 of the cost of the console just to get a game...
They should have moved to selling shorter, (split up or episodic if they want) titles ages ago...
