"The fact that, from all those different states, whether he is balancing on a balance beam, whether he is hanging from the rafters, whether he is clinging to the side of a wall, he can shoot and engage his enemies from those different positions"

Can't wait - this game should be tight.

That was definitely the thing that got me going, too. Shooting from any precarious position sounds pretty cool. I would like to go back and see what that ARG was like.

It'll certainly solve the main problem with the first game. Climb over some stuff, drop into an arena full of enemies, climb over more stuff, repeat.

I'm not sad to see the Sixaxis's role reduced either. I would love to see some footage soon.

Good interview. For those, like myself, that didn't know what an ARG is - "An alternate reality game (ARG) is an interactive narrative that uses the real world as a platform, often involving multiple media and game elements, to tell a story that may be affected by participants' ideas or actions." from Wiki.

Real world marketing in other words.

I don't think a single interview question has made me smile quite as much as the one about the dialogue. All those times in the first game where I found myself running through a hail of bullets saying "shit shit shit" and Drake was saying "crap crap crap" might just have been spontaneous. That, and the little quips thrown in really made the character feel more natural instead of having basic action guy one-liners you got stuff like Drake: "There's a bunch of bodies in here... and soup." Sully: "What?"

Yeah. Drake's lines felt natural and real, like when he found a new weapon "Now that's what I'm talking about!"

Uncharted is without a doubt one of my favorite exclusives on the PS3, and I hope that the sequel "fixes" the only "problem" in the game, which was only having 8 or so hours of gameplay.

I thought it was hilarious when Drake just barely climbed his way into the fortress("Ah, thank you god!") and then had to go back outside (Oh, you can't be serious", "Wasn't I just out here")

"We thought finally with PlayStation 3 we wanted to go fully real with real humans. We thought that the technology was there to finally get that emotional expression out of the characters' faces and be able to do what we set out to do with Uncharted."

Most "realistic humans" in video games, including Uncharted, are still expressionless zombies at the bottom of the uncanny valley, so I don't think the technology is there yet.

And, if anything, "realistic humans" are worst for expressing emotion. Most emotion is told though the eyes, but realistic characters are limited to subtle eye animations. Pixar and Disney prove that unrealistic characters (like Wall-E) are still the most effective at conveying emotion through computer animation.

You're absolutely right - why even bother trying? Lets make everyone look like flowery, bubbly cartoons or LEGO people. That'll fix everything.

I thought Uncharted did a fine job of expressing emotion. Non-human characters are easy to make express emotion because you can exaggerate everything. That's fine and dandy, but not every game character needs to be non-human or a caricature of one to convey emotion. And the bottom line is that they want believable characters, not caricatures.

Someone has obviously never played the original Uncharted. Those characters were much more believable than the much-talked-about models in games like Fallout 3.

Great expressive characters in Mass Effect - I was really let down by the facial animations in Fallout 3 after playing ME (still loved the game tho)

The expressiveness in Uncharted is one of the most memorable things about it. Whenever the game is mentioned I picture a scene early on where Nathan says something to Elena and he's got one eyebrow up and a wry smile on his face as he makes some smart alek comment.

My goodness is this game going to be good - they need a better boss fight at the end tho...

What, I never said bubbly cartoons or LEGO graphics. Team Fortress, Valkyria Chronicles, and the upcoming Madworld all feature different styles of unrealistic graphics, and I wouldn't call any of those games kiddy.

And granted Uncharted looks better than Grand Theft Auto IV, but it stills fails to look real. No one will ever mistake a video from Uncharted as a real film of live actors. The technology is capable of rendering photo realistic plastic and some simple inorganic objects, but it still struggles with skin, and a lot of work is still needed in the animation tools!

That was a great interview.

The first game was a real pleasure to play, and had a lot of replay value once you opened chapters and went to get more trophies and goof off. The second one looks like it's going to be even better. I have to admit that I am glad they dropped the sixaxis controls too, as they felt odd and somewhat useless in Uncharted.

I forget his name (and far too lazy to re-read the article to find it) but the voice actor for Nate adds so much to the character he portrays is stunning. Both Uncharted and Prince of Persia had incredibly funny remarks, quips and comments which have stuck with me and really helped build a strong depth of character - which I can also relate to.

Anyone remember the 'I spy' game in Prince of Persia. Couldn't stop laughing. :D

The first Uncharted is easily one of my favorite games this generation and one of only a few that I've bothered to complete end to end more than once. For that reason Uncharted 2 sits at the top of my most wanted list. It's going to be a long and difficult wait.

I have to agree with you 100% Vid. The first Uncharted was such an epic game and kind of got a bum wrap in allot of ways. I think skys the limit for this franchise as an IP. This is why I am loving what Sony is doing this generation. Instead of focusing on purchasing 3rd party exclusives that they won't control they are internally developing new IPs that we will get to enjoy for generations to come. Obviously the two are not mutually exclusive and you will always have some 3rd party exclusives based off of a working relationship like Quantic Dream with Heavy Rain and MGS 4 with Kojima Productions. It makes more sense to me to spend that money on internal projects like Infamous, Resistance, Motorstorm, Little Big Planet, MAG, Uncharted and Heavenly Sword opposed to buying exclusivity for Star Ocean IV or Mass Effect. The biggest difference we have seen between this gen and last gen with Sony is a willingness to develop new IPs internally and not get into a bidding war over titles they have no ownership stake in like GTA IV & Devil may Cry.

This was a fantastic interview that was more indepth than any Joystiq interview I remember in the past. It was fantastic and really gave me lots of insight into the new title, naughty dog and the world of Uncharted. It was quite the treat.

I absolutely loved the first Uncharted, with my only complaint being that the game was too short for me to get my fill :-)

Naughty Dog is one of the best developers in the industry, and from both a graphical and narrative standpoint, they've truly outdone themselves with their new franchise.

Nathan Drake's next adventure is my most anticipated game of the year, hands down. Thanks for the great gaming experience, Naughty Dog!

The first Uncharted was an incredible experience. I will always remember that game. First time I had friends come over to watch me play it through the whole game every day until I finished it. They wouldn't let play it without them being there (They dont have a ps3).

They loved the story and so did I. Uncharted 2= First day purchase for me! Can't wait.

Excellent review. Although I wish you'd asked if they were making any effort to reduce the texture pop-in in this one. That was probably my biggest issue with the origional.

Odd, never noticed it. I'm sure that engine is quite refined by now so I'd be suprised if it was an issue in the new iteration; although Gears 2 still has the same issue w/ texture pop in.

I'd really like a sequel to Heavenly Sword too but I don't think they are doing one (read that somewhere a while back)

Can't wait for this game.

Again: DO THE CROSSOVER - Nathan meets Lara = awesomeness. Wishful thinking but how great would it be to see those two characters together?

I'd like to ask a question. Does anyone really WANT multiplayer in Uncharted? I remember an interview with Amy Hennig for 1UP Yours, where she talked about how games used to be single player experiences, and she thought developers were focusing too much on the multiplayer aspects of their games.

I know it's been a long time, but I can't be the only one who remembers playing incredible adventure games like Gabriel Knight and King's Quest on the PC in the 80s and 90s. These games were like reading an interactive book, and were well-developed single player experiences. To me, games like Uncharted (and to a lesser extent, God of War), are an evolution of the adventure games of old.

And I, for one, can't wait to continue this adventure.

No, this is one of those games that shouldn't have a MP aspect. I can't see it being anything that people would really get into enough to warrant it. I feel the same about Bioshock. The SP games are tight enough so why tack on MP.

Multiplayer is utterly unecessary for Uncharted. I'm a mp junkie but some games just don't need it. Quite the testament to the guys/gals at Naughty Dog that the product easily stands on its' own.

Great interview by the way.

Great interview.

That took alot of balls to re-write the tools in C++. That's a massive undertaking and I'm glad they took the time to do it so that it would help them downstream, and also there should be big thanks out there to anybody who helped fund that effort (I can't imagine Naughty Dog doing it out of their own pockets entirely for a full year or more).

Uncharted 2 only really needs 2-3 things:

1) Get rid of the long waves of tough-as-nails enemies. It got tiresome sometimes when you'd sit there and couldn't get the story to progress.

2) Thank god they're fixing the grenades. They were awkwardly unusable.

3) There should be a tiered hint system for the puzzles (I think there was but I can't recall, it's been a long time). One of the puzzles towards the end was so tedious, I don't know how I made it through half-asleep.

i really liked the first game ! the Adventure was really great, like a good indiana jones movie, the caractere were great, the voice with lip synch amazing !

To me i dont think we need multiplayer, i prefer naughty dog put the time in the singleplayer development, sure a little fun thing to do online would be great, but i know it take a huge amout of time to do a multiplayer mode. What could be great is a co-op online mode were player must help each other, like in Ico, with specific map. But i guess its not realistic :p

Two things i like to see in the sequel, first vsynch on please ! and upscaling to 1080p.

I hope they continue to focus on the solid single player experience and if they can deliver with the same punch if not more like they did on the first one all of us are in for a ride! I can't wait!! Very nice interview!!

Evan is very accessible. He always makes time for long interviews. As one of the poor artists who had to deal with the tool rewrites (more than 2 in my case). I appreciate Evan telling everyone how much Naughty Dog went through making the game look so amazing on new hardware that had a rushed nVidia graphics chip. Naughty Dogs are the best at what they do which is why despite all those obstacles, the game still looked incredible. I can't wait to play Uncharted 2. The train level alone will be worth the cost of the game. Games like this and Little Big Planet are why I keep my PS3 around.
