Honestly, I don't see why GameFly should be looking into buying a media outlet when I still can't get any Xbox 360 game of merit because they all have "Low" availability. You know how often that happens with my Netflix account? Once a year. With GameFly, it's every day. Maybe they could've taken that money to bolster their game supply or something.

I will have to disagree with you here. I rent Blu-Ray movies from Netflix & they are terribly slow in getting here especially the latest ones. Games cost 4 times as much as a DVD or 2 times a Blu-Ray so naturally they will have less of them.
I understand their delay, dont like it but do understand it.

Blu Ray takes forever, I will occasionally get something within a few weeks of the release but then they screw me on other things Hellboy 2 has been #1 in my queue since its release!

I've actually had moderate success with GameFly. I wouldn't say I get any brand new games but I always get whats at the top of my queue in a reasonable time frame.

However much more on topic GameFly buying Shacknews is weird. I have read Shacknews for years and I would classify it as a PC gaming + random topic kind of place (also a lot of NSFW material pops up) I don't see Shacknews being able to stay anything like it has been... which is very sad.

The key to getting what you want from gamefly is to empty your q except for the couple of games you want. Then once you return something you wait for about 2 days after they say they received your last game and send them a letter. Quicker than snot you'll get that game that says very low availability. Trust me, I've been doing it for years. My first year they were great about sending me stuff, even did fast return for most of my stuff. Then about the 9 month mark they started sending me stuff from the bottom of my Q and I was done with that noise.

While nobody at Shacknews is getting laid off, GameFly is in the process of letting go of their Los Angeles customer service team for an inexperienced group of people in Austin, Texas.

So besides low availability in the games you want to play, you should expect to see an overall downgrade in their customer service as well.

Gamefly bought Shacknews for the advertising revenues the Shack pulls in. The end.

I hope the quality of the content doesn't wain at all. Shacknews is the only other gaming site I check several times a day other than Joystiq.

I hope this means I get a Fileshack "Mercury" account since I'm subscribed to GameFly.

With Shacknews being more of a PC oriented site and also owning Fileshack, the only cool thing that could come out of this is GameFly somehow expanding into PC game rentals (like GameTap but focused much more on new releases). Sadly what will actually happen is that they will bludgeon Shacknews into yet another console games news site and drive away one of the best commenting communities on the internet.

This is awesome news. In my mind it just points to Gamefly's interest in expanding what's already a great business model. You only have to look at their growth over the last year or so to realize they're quickly becoming a dominant presence in the gaming world. The possibilities for where this will take them and Shacknews are beyond cool, The idea of Shacknews being integrated into the Gamefly site is great.

When you think about all the services Gamefly's added to their site beyond just renting games (i.e., trade ins, purchasing games, music downloads, user and critic reviews, etc...) it only points to having a one stop shop for everything game related eventually. Soon you'll be able to get your gaming news, rent a game, pick one up you've been wanting to buy and maybe trade in a couple while you're at it all in one place. Hell yes! This is a good thing.

On an unrelated note... what's this nonsense about one customer service site being less experienced than another? Customer service is customer service. It's not like they train one group differently than the other. They all work for the same company. The idea that one group can't do what the other does is silly. It doesn't make any sense.
