Rockstar goes west with Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar San Diego is kicking the dirt off its boots and returning to the American west with Red Dead Redemption. Developed using Rockstar's proprietary RAGE engine, the sequel to 2004's Red Dead Revolver promises an open-world complete with "strong plotlines in a massive vibrant, rural environment" when it pulls into town this fall for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Few gameplay details have been revealed regarding the upcoming title, which looks to cast players not in the role of Revolver's bounty hunter lead Red Halow, but instead a former outlaw named John Marston during the turn of the 20th century.
Open world. A bad guy turned good. Just throw in Miss Kitty and her band of hookers and we're all set for GTA in the Wild West. Yee haw!

Your name is awesome. Congrats.
Jerkamie @ Feb 4th 2009 10:48AM
Just hope its not in your gamertag, ms recently made me change mine because it contained "jerk" and it was found offensive.
Jerk Face @ Feb 4th 2009 10:51AM
Are you serious!? Because I've had xJERKFACEx for over a year. That would be pretty unfortunate.
Muhammad-Oli @ Feb 4th 2009 8:44AM
Finally a game to look forward to. This looks and sounds awesome!

ScottG13 @ Feb 4th 2009 8:45AM
haha. This is the RDR sequel that various podcasts have accidentally mentioned a half dozen times in the past few months. Obviously, this has been shown a bit around town.
drdre74 @ Feb 4th 2009 8:49AM
Red Dead Revolver was a great game. I had it on the PS2 and remember the bosses being some of the coolest characters in a game. The guy with the coffin on his back was great. lol!
Mimglow @ Feb 4th 2009 8:49AM
RDR was a decent launch title. Looking forward to an open-world western.
Mimglow @ Feb 4th 2009 8:53AM
Ooops, I was thinking of Gun. I vaguely remember RDR. Was there a scene in it where you were in some sort of canyon flinging artillery bombs across the river to your enemies?
Optimaximal @ Feb 4th 2009 9:35AM
I think that was GUN...
rdr = best game ever @ Mar 18th 2009 10:20PM
yeah that was red dead. as far as i'm concerned, best game ever in the history of video games (next to halo 3, fallout 3, and tetris). YER GONNA BLOW UP REAAAAAL GOOD COWBOY!
JAH75157 @ Feb 4th 2009 8:50AM
i hope it's longer than the last one, if it is i will be purchasing
Jody Anthony (gamertag and psn: JodyAnthony) @ Feb 4th 2009 8:51AM
I never played Red Dead Revolver..is it still worth playing for the first time now? The concept always sounded cool.
Dan @ Feb 4th 2009 9:45AM
It's an okay game. Great idea and some of the presentation around it is great, but I remember the game having a feeling of not quite being done. Terrible AI, some collision problems, some needed tweaking of game mechanics, etc. There are two bosses I particularly remember, the first being a boss I never even fought because he just fell off the moving train we were going to fight on. The second one was a boss I needed to stop from killing townsfolk. He was quick and pretty tough to beat until I just stopped, took out my rifle and started to cap him from across town. The fact that he was getting shot in the head and there were no people to shoot on his side (they followed your character) didn't even phase him. Weird stuff like that happened often in the game.
But I chalk all that up to the fact that Rockstar picked up this game after Capcom dropped it and then didn't take the time to really make it their own. Here's hoping that they've taken their time and will come out with a great sequel. But I hope they don't try to make it too open. I actually kinda liked Red Dead's linear nature.
Jody Anthony (gamertag and psn: JodyAnthony) @ Feb 4th 2009 9:47AM
cool, thanks for the impressions!
freedomfromconformity @ Feb 4th 2009 12:07PM
I actually REALLY liked the game. It was a lot of fun and I loved how the game did the standoffs. The game would go into slow motion and you could even shoot him in the hand, leg, or head if you were quick enough. It was very unique and a lot of fun. Yeah it seemed like it was unfinished but a sequel has incredible potential. I'm definitely looking forward to this one.
JoeTheBlow @ Feb 4th 2009 9:02AM
*searches brain*
The name rings a bell, but i can remember literally nothing about the original.
I remember Gun, which was alright, does that count?
Duke @ Feb 4th 2009 1:11PM
Have to look back to the PS2 and XBox days. It was a fun title. I thought Gun was a lot more fun though.
mike @ Feb 4th 2009 9:05AM
I'd like a FPS multiplayer western, personally.
John P @ Feb 4th 2009 9:19AM
Though I don't play it, my room mate loves "Fistful of Frags," which runs the Source engine. It's a mod, and so is still in progress, but you might give it a look.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 4th 2009 9:26AM
There's a couple of them out there. I've heard Darkwatch is pretty awesome.
busydoingnothing @ Feb 4th 2009 10:29AM
"Fistful of Frags" mod for the Half-Life 2 Source engine. I've been having a lot of fun with that game the past two weeks. I'd highly recommend downloading it and checking it out. The sad part is there aren't a lot of servers, but usually you can find a good full server during peak gaming hours.
Steve @ Feb 4th 2009 9:10AM
Although I didn't like GTAIV (R* made it too serious), I'm gonna keep my eye on this one.
Zanthox @ Feb 4th 2009 9:14AM
The first was the greatest cowboy game I've ever played, and ever since I beat it in 2 days at a friend's house I've been hoping for a sequel, praiz dah lawd!!!
Crimson_Ryan @ Feb 4th 2009 9:41AM
I remember I bought my Xbox with this game. Great times. Played the duel mode by myself for hours at a time. Four way duels were always a blast, even if I was alone... Hope this has some multiplayer duels. If so, EPIC WIN.
And... Why does this guy ALSO look like Clint Eastwood? Reds brother maybe?
WHAT A TWEEST!
Readme @ Feb 4th 2009 9:46AM
The original Red Dead Revolver is still worth checking out, IMO. It's been a long time since I first played it, but I remember the gun duels being twitchy fun.
I must say, however, that Gunsmoke for the NES is still the single hardest western shoot 'em up I've ever played. That damn Ninja(!) level was intense.
Ihavepants @ Feb 4th 2009 9:19AM
I want a sequel to Outlaws, GET ON IT LUCAS ARTS, and stop being shitty while you're at it.
dsub @ Feb 4th 2009 1:04PM
I'll second that. Outlaws was a badass game. I loved it.
I'll also second the part about LucasArts stopping the suckage.
I wish they'd make a sequel to Full Throttle as well.
Strategy_Panda (Pot & Spoon 4 Life) @ Feb 4th 2009 2:07PM
I remember that game... I also seem to remember enjoying it.. not 100% sure on that though.............

I say what this game really needs is music by Ennio Morricone.I would buy it first day for that.

Dan Rabot @ Feb 4th 2009 9:29AM
RDR was pretty good reckon this will be sick.
What was the other Western open world game? That was AWESOME!...
GUN - that was a brilliant game - anyone else get caught up in the online poker game linked to it. Brilliant..
