Rumor: Gauntlet DS has died
Gauntlet DS has been removed or changed to a nebulous status on several retail sites. GoNintendo took notice that the title was removed from GameStop; allegedly, Amazon told customers that the game had been "canceled." Furthermore, Eidos no longer makes any mention of the title on its site.
A source familiar with the development of the title has confirmed to Joystiq that Gauntlet DS has indeed been scrapped; however, we've contacted both Eidos and developer Backbone Entertainment to learn what has (or hasn't) befallen the DS dungeon crawler. We'll update as soon as we hear something official.

A portable Gauntlet with WiFi and Voice Chat? I would've been all over that... that's a shame.

Is the industry still recession proof? Not saying this had anything to do with the current economic climate but when you see daily posts about developers and publisher laying off employees and games getting cancelled it has to make you sick to your stomach. That is unless your some kind of sicko who takes pleasure in others losing their job.
aj @ Feb 4th 2009 7:00PM
Nothing is recession proof.
However, I think the industry churning out crappy games that no one buys and general avarice and greed might have a lot to do with these things as well.
Venom @ Feb 4th 2009 2:33PM
That's a shame... =/
Alien Lord @ Feb 4th 2009 2:44PM
I only hear about this after it's died, is that because it wasn't very good or because it had bad marketing?
Birn @ Feb 4th 2009 4:50PM
I vote bad marketing.
Venom @ Feb 4th 2009 5:08PM
Seconded on bad marketing. The game looked really interesting.
BradVT @ Feb 4th 2009 2:48PM
But, who is going to collect the rune stones?

I thought this came out? I recall reading the review in Nintendo Power a while back...

I was really looking forward to this game and THOUGHT it was already out as well! Here in Canada, I swear I looked at it at EBGames back around Christmas but didn't get it at the time as my budget was filled with other games and when I went back in January/February to get it, it was gone. They said it was discontinued. I have not seen it anywhere else in town since. Wii Nintendo channel had the release date as being back in June/July 2008 (could that have been for Canada?!) but on Nintendo's website it says February 2009. The title is still listed on the Wii Nintendo channel but the video of it has since been removed. I thought it looked good and still want it!

Man, I was really anticipating the game...I was a huge fan of Gauntlet back in the late 90's :
ryan @ Feb 4th 2009 2:54PM
This can only mean one thing: Eidos is pulling out, having been frightened of the inevitable Diablo 2 DS port! I kid, but D2 on DS would sure be something to see.
buffalo_aaa @ Feb 4th 2009 3:23PM
damnit! I've really been looking forward to this game for a while now. Everything's gone in life, nothing good is left.
Satan has truly prevailed. Lets all hail.
Jerk Face @ Feb 4th 2009 3:41PM
That went from zero to Satanic in no time flat, LOL.
Ninbrendo @ Feb 4th 2009 3:49PM
Guess I won't be full of bombs and/or keys anytime soon...
bearcall @ Feb 4th 2009 3:56PM
damn... the one game that was going to make me buy a DS!
Scuffles @ Feb 4th 2009 4:02PM
That is disappointing I'm really really really picky about my games and gauntlet would have definitely been on my list of games to pick up.
Necrotix @ Feb 4th 2009 4:23PM
Aye was looking forward to this as well as Dragon's Lair but have heard nothin about DL for like 2 years... /sigh
aj @ Feb 4th 2009 7:01PM
NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
db2 @ Feb 4th 2009 7:13PM
Bummer. I was looking forward to this. If it is indeed canceled, here's to hoping the unfinished game gets leaked for all to admire.
Mooga @ Feb 4th 2009 7:41PM
I tried the demo when I was at Nintendo World. It was really bad, which was depressing. I was looking forward to another great Gauntlet game!
Jacksons @ Feb 4th 2009 8:13PM
That would have been the first game I've bought for my DS in almost a year! What a shame!
FifthE1ement @ Feb 4th 2009 8:40PM
Damn! I hope the devs at least release a beta for us to play. I would pat a few bucks to play a beta rom version. This really blows as I was looking forward to this game. When I saw the image on the front page I got excited then I started reading... :(
d3athcr4ft @ Feb 4th 2009 8:57PM
Lame. I was looking forward to this. :(
Matt O @ Feb 4th 2009 9:59PM
FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--
E @ Feb 5th 2009 4:41PM
I knew this would happen...sucks. I'm surprised it didn't happen earlier, though. It's so hard getting certain games out.

Is there any update on this? I haven't heard anything since this story was published. Last time I looked (a few weeks ago now admittedly) it was still listed as due for release on April 24.
roror @ Apr 21st 2009 4:19AM
3 days away and nothing on any nintendo, dev or retail sites.. It has to be dead.
psychowing @ Apr 21st 2009 3:51PM
If this has been canceled, I am going to be so pissed. I've been looking forward to it since I first heard about it a few months ago. Especially since the first two in the series (on the NES) were, in my opinion, the best and I can't even play them since my father decided to throw away our NES because he couldn't get it to work (like hitting it helps). If they're working on bugs, okay, that's fine. It's for the betterment of the game, but killing it? Not fair.
psychowing @ Apr 21st 2009 3:57PM
Actually, Gauntlet is on the Eidos website - in the coming soon section. However, it is listed as for the Wii. Until you click on it. Then in the description it says for the DS. Of course, it also gives September 2008 as the release date... I'm just going to post the url for people to go and look.
