THQ eliminating 600 jobs

Beleaguered publisher THQ is giving the axe to 24 percent of its workforce -- about 600 employees -- as part of cost reduction measures. The publisher has not disclosed which divisions or specific studios will be affected by the layoffs, stating only that it "will reduce costs in each functional area."
THQ eliminated 100 jobs at its mobile division offices in San Diego, Germany, and the UK at the end of January. It's currently unclear if these jobs are in addition to the 600 the company announced plans to do away with today.

I wonder when this is going to stop. Seriously, how many jobs have been lost altogether, over 200,000+?

"how many jobs have been lost altogether, over 200,000+?"
In the game industry? Surely not nearly that many. Probably not even 20k.
In the US it has been around 500k a month since november.
In the world... ??? Many millions.

Mmm...Remember when wanting to be a video game designer sounded like a good idea?

Thankfully the indie scene has been reborn thanks to the PSN/XBLA/iPhone market streams.
The corporate world is completely fucked (thats what happens when you sell your company away in chunks to gamblers who call themselves traders), but the bedroom scene is the best its been in well over a decade.
If you want to code, code away, you can even get rich off it now.

I can't believe they had 2400+ jobs to begin with, you know, based on the volume of stuff they put out.

Zing!

This seriously needs to stop. With gross profits and huge sales I am having a hard time sympathizing with these companies and hate to hear news like this. I wish these guys the best of luck. This is probably the worst time to study to become a game designer. There are thousands of seasoned pros on the market without a job and an up and comer stands little to no chance now competing with these guys.
Sad times.

Hope my friends job there is safe.

What amazes me is that with the constant crap they put out they could manage to pay 600 employees AND all the others until now.

Recession or not, nobody working at THQ should be safe. That company has been on a downward spiral for a long time, just like midway. I feel bad for all the designers who couldn't develop any original ideas and had to be stuck making licensed THQ crap. They must have seen this coming.
