When that bevy of new content goes live for Warhammer Online later this month, there could be more than 300,000 fans around to enjoy it. That's the word from our sister site Massively, which reports that developer Mythic Entertainment could now boast nearly a third of a million accounts for the game.
That said, let's put the numbers in perspective: If all of WAR's subscribers were a classroom of 30 students, and all World of Warcraft's subscribers were represented by the other students at the school, then there wouldn't be a bully without wedgie arthritis or an unsold tube of acne cream for miles. (Thanks, representative math!)

The subscriber number dropped to 300,000.
I believe it was around 1,000,000 around the launch period.

That's 300,000 solid subscribers to build on. Even WoW had a huge drop after the free month wore out.

That is true there was a drop but WAR actually had a increase in player count in November up to 800k but then to drop to 300k only 2 months later is staggering. However for someone who played the game and got sick of it's lack of balance, frame rate issues and grind happy end game I can tell you it is no surprise to me.

Ouch...
Wonder how long WoW will dominate the competition.

40 Bullies for every 1 weakling means that the bullies would not have enough weaklings to wedgie, so unless arthritis comes from non-wedgie-action, I think your logic is off.

600k in sept. to 300k in jan isn't bad, speaking that a lot of people are probably going to come back once the patches start rolling again.

300,000 is a great number to build up with. There is no way they should not be at 1 million solid subscribes in the next year or so. With new content, additions, and an expansion they should grab more attention. WAR is the best MMO since WoW. The UI, content, and unique classes offer enough variety that it does not feel the same. It is a very polished MMO, compared to most of the MMO launches in 2008. WAR deserves better and it will get better.

Deceiving: the headline of the article implies that the WAR user base is increasing, while it is in fact dropping at what some would call an alarming rate -- it shrunk from about twice this figure in early November to 300k by the end of December. Ouch?

Obviously WAR, while having some interesting new ideas, hasn't differentiated itself from WoW enough to make players switch. I'd be interesting to see LOTRO subscriber numbers as well. Both of these games have some interesting differentiating ideas, but at the end of the day they play almost identically to WoW and therefore don't really stand out on their own.

From what I remember, that 800k number was "Characters" not subscribers from last year when it was announced.

This is not good for Mythic at all, it is behind AoC in subscribers. FunCom said AoC had 460k at last count even with all of its problems. Dogmaticatheist, LotRO was boasting over 1 million subscribers and is still seeing growth too.

Which is probably caused by the fact that Lotro has got this kick@ss subscribtion (lifetime for I thought about €200,-), in comparison to a monthly €15,-.
