Here's a lesson from the Joystiq School of Business, offered absolutely free as a service to our readers. If you hold off on releasing your major games until 2009, your 2008 is going to look pretty shabby. The lesson has been demonstrated to us this morning by Capcom, which reports that when comparing the last nine months of 2008 to the same period in 2007, sales were down 8.6? ?percent and net income dropped ?95? ?percent.
It's rough news, to be sure, but this should in no way be considered a death knell for the House That Mega Man Built. We've played Capcom's offerings for the near future -- like Dark Void, Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV, etc. -- and the next few months are looking very bright indeed.

Best XBLA games ever were from Capcom in 2008.

Yeah seriously! This is a huge surprise, I mean Bionic Commando Rearmed and MM9 were miles better than MOST of the "AAA" titles that came out this year.
Well...then again I'm old school like that.
Anyway, here's hoping RE5, SFIV, and Bionic Commando 2 boost their sales in to the stratosphere. Capcom is one of the few companies left that makes games for gamers (as apposed to EA and Ubisoft who stick to more casual stuff).

But just think what a profit increase percentage we'll see in 09! Typical business maneuvering...

They also got Street Fighter HD out, and Apollo Justice that I know of. Probably Mega Man ZX Advent, too, now that I think about it (but I'm not sure on that one). It's not like they didn't release anything, but compared to the slates that some companies had, they've been quiet.
(crosses his fingers that maybe this means they're secretly working on MM Legends 3 after all)

1942: Joint Strike
Rocketmen: Axis of Evil
Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Devil May Cry 4
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition (PS3 and Colonies for 360)
Bionic Commando Rearmed
Megaman 9
and that's without counting handheld releases.
I would say its an average number (quantity wise) of releases

Death knell? They didn't _lose_ money. Their profits were down to almost nothing, but they weren't losses. This compared to the other major publishers earnings (or rather, massive losses).

capcom is probably my favorite game company and i would be very distraught if they were downsized, acquired, broken up, broken down, or otherwise. me like them so much, me want to cry

yeah but in 2009 they'll probably become the overlord of the videogame industry

Seems like they need to start spreading their game releases a bit. How you go about that, I couldnt tell you.

I'm sure half of the problem is that they avoid the Holiday Shuffle so their games don't get lost in it. That's all well and good, since their releases end up sticking out like a bright red rose in a nuclear wasteland, but people's wallets are usually hurting after said shuffle.

Way to skew information. Doesn't a profit mean sales before all expenses ? so technically they're still positive ?If their net income/net profit was negative then we'd be surprised.. Oh Joystiq.. ..you're so funny

RE5's profit is looking very grim. I dont know what the reaction was like to that piece of crap in Japan but it seems like a good 80% of the people who are commenting about the demo hate it because of the ridiculous controls. RE5 is going to suffer the same fate as Force Unleashed, a hyped up game that has its hype destroyed by a bad demo and a massive amount of bad word of mouth.
Its really all up to SF4.

If they don't make profits, they'll be releasing another Monster Hunter version for PSP....

I can't even believe how not excited I am for RE5. The funny thing? I was super-hyped until I played the demo.

@WRE - Same goes for me. All the previews I read said that the controls were massively improved, but that was a complete load of crap. They are just as bad as ever. I'm still going to buy it, but it might be a tough sell for people that won't buy it just because it's an RE game.
Capcom is going to get a nice chunk of my money this year anyway: RE5, SFIV, Dead Rising 2 (I hope), Tatsunoko vs Capcom (going to import soonish), and probably a megaman or two.
They'll be fine
