Sega recently filed a series of trademarks that's had doe-eyed arcade nostalgists foaming at the mouth -- the once prolific arcade publisher recently trademarked three related items in the U.S. and Europe: "Ringedge", "Ringwide" and a logo which contains -- you guessed it -- rings. Whatever these items may be, their trademarks designate them for use with arcade game boards, video game software, stand alone video game machines, and arcade game machines with built-in screens.
Normally, we'd make some snotty remark about the decline of arcades in those two territories, but we just can't seem to bring ourselves to do it. This is Sega we're talking about -- the folks who blessed your local quarter-devouring establishment with House of the Dead and The Ocean Hunter. If anyone can restore the Western arcade industry to its former glory, it's those guys.

So what could it possibly be? Anybody remember the pads on the classic SF that you actually punched to make your onscreen character punch? I doubt thats it. Some totally new IP maybe? The logo didn't really look like a game logo, but a feature logo, so is it something new or a new thing to interact with something old?

It would be intriguing if SEGA were preparing for a triumphant return to the game market. Like i said before, Nintendo has shown the way for a company to run this industry (which this isn't about addressing the fallacious casual/hardcore thing, this is about pure financial capability), that a strong first-party catalog run by a company with great financial prowess and an efficiently designed machine can win against the megacorporations, and win big
SEGA is one of the few publishers out there with the kind of docket that could become a list of exclusives, Ubisoft is, perhaps, another. Just to specify that it would require more than to simply be a strong publisher to be a good first-party publisher. I couldn't see EA or Activision running their own console, for instance, but i could see Ubisoft or SEGA, but SEGA needs to straighten up their finances before they can hope to do so again

Hmm, a logo that rings, eh? Could it be the games we've been waiting for our entire gaming lives, Jerky Boys Hero and Crank Yankers Hero?

It'd be really nice if SEGA revives the American arcade industry.
It'd be really really really nice if SEGA releases a new home console.
