First TMNT Smash Up trailer reminds us of something
Ubisoft seems to have found its angle for promoting TMNT: Smash Up, a "brawl 25 years in the making", even going so far as to use "BRAWL!" and "SMASH!" exclamations in this new trailer.
It's almost -- and this is a stretch, we know -- as if Ubisoft wanted people to be aware of the fact that it's making a character-based fighting game in the style of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, developed by the same company who worked on Super Smash Bros. Brawl, on the same system on which Super Smash Bros. Brawl was a hit.
We actually find it a little jarring to see Game Arts described as "the dudes that brought you Super Smash Bros. Brawl." A party fighting game from "the dudes who brought you Lunar: The Silver Star" wouldn't have the same impact, we suppose.

Well, that showed absolutely nothing about the game. But I guess it doesn't really matter cause I already sold my wii.
It was worthless.
SoulBlade @ Feb 6th 2009 3:25PM
You are like the coolest person evar
NaeemTHM @ Feb 6th 2009 3:26PM
Lies. Wii cost two fiddy.
Scotty @ Feb 6th 2009 4:18PM
Then why are your reading the Wii joystiq articles?
DigitalEnforcer @ Feb 6th 2009 4:23PM
I'm reading the normal Joystiq articles. I don't like to segregate and only go with Xbox or Playstation stuff.
I'm not Racist
Dopple Boppler @ Feb 6th 2009 3:02PM
So like, are they going for this more generic (not meant in a bad way) look for the turtles instead of the CG movie turtles look that we saw in those pictures from like last week? Because this look for them definitely looks much, much better, and then they wouldn't have to adapt older characters like Baxter Stockman and Rat King into some kid friendly style.
intro94 @ Feb 6th 2009 10:40PM
i hated the 3d movies look, i mean i think that for every 1000 people who saw the original movies, one managed to see those 3d things...
Mike @ Feb 6th 2009 3:08PM
Wow those 25 years in the making really seemed to have payed off. Particularly in the music and shitty animation departments.
Mike @ Feb 6th 2009 3:09PM
Oh that's right, this is a Wii exclusive (or is it Wii and DS?). Forgot to adjust my expectations accordingly.
bouncicles @ Feb 6th 2009 4:00PM
You're exactly right. It would be much better on the Commodore 64. We should all pay attention to you, because your comments about The Last Ninja and the Great Giana Sister remain cogent and astute.
Lee @ Feb 6th 2009 5:35PM
Nicely said Bouncicles.
Levi @ Feb 6th 2009 3:08PM
Remember how awesome that first trailer for Street Fighter 4 was when it first came out?
Well, this is exactly opposite of that.
Mr Khan @ Feb 6th 2009 3:54PM
funny how opinions work, because i felt the exact opposite as you (mostly because i dislike the artistic turn they took for Street Fighter IV)
Levi @ Feb 6th 2009 6:00PM
Fine, I'll cover all my bases this time
Remember how awesome that first trailer for [Insert title of game that you jizzed in your pants over] was when it first came out?
Well, this is exactly opposite of that.
cylet @ Feb 11th 2009 4:11PM
LOL agreed
spambot @ Feb 6th 2009 3:12PM
Is it me, or does the gameplay seem incredibly slow?
Roto13 @ Feb 6th 2009 3:17PM
You've seen gameplay?
CJLopez @ Feb 6th 2009 3:19PM
There's no gameplay, only a prerendered figth
Josh @ Feb 6th 2009 3:25PM
This was posted by agoaj in the comments section of this video on GameTrailers:
"The fight at the end is taken from the Rough House Fight Test they used to proto the fight between Raph and Leo in the 2007 movie. Not made for the game at all, just something they through in the trailer for some flair."
Amazing...
Brian @ Feb 6th 2009 3:17PM
there sure is a lot of Street Fighting' in this trailer.
Mayne @ Feb 6th 2009 3:15PM
Wut?
I should be kinda excited. But that looked retarded. Isn't the point of teasing us with pre-rendered animation to at least trick us into thinking the actual in-game stuff COULD look "that" cool...?
And to me, that does look like the style from the CG movie—scratch that: it IS the style from the movie...
Roto13 @ Feb 6th 2009 3:16PM
I sincerely hope the actual gameplay is a lot faster and smoother than that.
Josh @ Feb 6th 2009 3:22PM
No gameplay?
And I really don't like how they're unashamedly "ripping off" Smash Bros., or rather, trying to ride on its (well deserved) wave of popularity.
I have a feeling this game won't be very well accepted in the gaming community, and probably won't be nearly as good a game as Smash Bros. anyway.
But, again, I've seen no gameplay in motion yet, and that's what matters.
SoulBlade @ Feb 6th 2009 3:29PM
And Ubisoft sees the excitement meter for this game drop shortly after releasing the trailer... sad... I bet a lot of people were curious about this game but a trailer like that (horrible PRE RENDERED animation and no gameplay?! who authorized that?!) completely kills excitement.
BxGT @ Feb 6th 2009 3:34PM
Why are we advertising wii games?
Mr Khan @ Feb 6th 2009 3:53PM
Because Wii is just a month or so away from having more than half the market?
BxGT @ Feb 6th 2009 4:14PM
maybe in hardware but not software
Mr Khan @ Feb 6th 2009 4:42PM
Not according to statistics. Wii software totals are way up, and EA has committed to proportional Wii support (50% market, 50% software). Others will follow, because pretty much everyone is in the hole, except for Ubisoft, and they've already made their commitment
AwesomeTown @ Feb 6th 2009 3:41PM
Considering this trailer has no gameplay whatsoever and I probably will not buy said game anyway, lets talk about something good, like Lunar. I love that game, still have my copy, and apparently, Wikipedia tells me that it was the second best selling game for the Sega CD. True story. (I think... it is wikipedia)
GO! X 12 @ Feb 6th 2009 3:49PM
Hello.
Hi.
May I ask you a few questions about the new TMNT Smash Brothers-like fighting game trailer?
Sure.
Are you going to purchase this game?
No.
Why?
Because I saw the one minute teaser trailer online.
Well isn't that a little fast?
What do you mean?
Well, you don't know anything about the game.
So.
Yeah but, You haven't seen any actual gameplay footage.
So.
Don't you wanna try the game out first, before you make up your mind?
No.
Why?
Because the trailer sucked monkey balls!
Yeah but, it was just a teaser trailer. You know, Promotion.
*Shrugs*
The game could turn out good. Remember, it's still early in development. Things could change.
Who cares! I saw the trailer already and I don't like the game. OK!
Ok. You don't have yell.
*Young kid walks away with his friends*
*Gaming Journalist says under his breath*
Fucking fat little piece of shit fanboy.
ZombiePikmin @ Feb 6th 2009 4:06PM
That was pretty good man, sounds like something i would say.
DigitalEnforcer @ Feb 6th 2009 4:30PM
*young kid turns around and walks back to the gaming Journalist*
"How dare you call me fat! I'm gonna beat the living hell out of you!"
*Gaming journal pees his pants, but acts like nothing happened*
"I was . . . I mean . .. I didn't mean to . . . call you that name . .. . "
*Young kid looks at the quivering man*
"You pussy . .. grow a pair"
*Journalist grabs his crotch and runs*
Ridgecity @ Feb 6th 2009 7:46PM
Are you implying that jornalists are neutral until final product? lol, that's news to me.
jorojoserojas @ Feb 6th 2009 3:49PM
What are the chances of TMNT: Tournament Fighters for SNES being released on the Virtual Console when this game comes out? I effing loved that game, and would kill to play it again.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 6th 2009 7:03PM
The only thing I remember from that game was that girl who attacked with her butt.
Awesome.
Thief @ Feb 6th 2009 3:53PM
Remember when Ubisoft used to come up with their own ideas for games, instead of ripping off Nintendogs, Brain Age, now Smash Bros, and their older Prince of Persia games?
Mr Khan @ Feb 6th 2009 3:56PM
Smash Bros is one of those games that needs to be ripped off, though. Someone needs to put the fun back into fighting games, anyway, and the TMNT universe is easily exploitable to this end
Mr Khan @ Feb 6th 2009 3:59PM
Eh, it certainly isn't what we looked for. Considering that there are gameplay screens floating around out there, i don't think it would have been too much to ask for realtime footage
Its not like this is a game that is far, far off either. Legend has it at September, somewhat past the time to be doing teasers, i think.
Purple Haze @ Feb 6th 2009 4:06PM
One of Shawn Elliott's links killed TMNT for me. I can't bring myself to watch this trailer.
ZombiePikmin @ Feb 6th 2009 4:08PM
If for some reason the G-Trailers video doesn't work. . .

Im kind pumped for this.. I so need my Rocksteady and Bebop fix, and Im not talking the comic relief Rocksteady and Bebop, I need the violent mean ones.
hoop @ Feb 6th 2009 5:25PM
You know, far be it for me to say we don't need more heroes in a half-shell, but instead of the Brawl-style gameplay that they're going with, I think I would have much preferred a 4-player co-op, side-scroller like the old arcade game.
Anyone else?
(PS - They need to release the old X-Men Arcade game on XBLA/PSN/WiiWare or any platform.)
dave @ Feb 6th 2009 6:57PM
I love those games. They should also put the arcade versions of Alien vs. Predator, Simpson’s, Bucky O'Hare, Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder and every other 2.5D side-scrolling beat/slash 'em ups EVER made.
Lee @ Feb 6th 2009 5:39PM
Maybe.
Gewurz Man got equipped with... XBox 360! @ Feb 6th 2009 6:09PM
I would totally buy a party fighting game billed as something made by "the dudes who brought you Lunar: The Silver Star".
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 6th 2009 7:04PM
ಠ_ಠ
Looks bad man.
WINterfang @ Feb 6th 2009 7:08PM
The trailer wasn't very exciting =/, and the actual movie had great fighting sequences.
perfectchaos @ Feb 6th 2009 8:04PM
looks dudes. that trailer was radically bodacious. you guys act like it was a total bummer. i'm gonna go grab some pepperoni pizza. cowabunga!
Gewurz Man got equipped with... XBox 360! @ Feb 7th 2009 10:46AM
don't forget the marshmallows and jellybeans!
solidunit @ Feb 7th 2009 2:58PM
Game Arts made Smash Brothers Brawl? Ummm I dunno bout that one...
