Joystiq visits: The Pinball Hall of Fame
Vegas isn't just a mecca for gambling, strip clubs and CES -- it's also the home of the Pinball Hall of Fame, situated a couple of miles off the strip. Although once you walk through these hallowed halls of gaming past, it's hard to figure out why a place like this isn't showcased in the middle of Mandalay Bay or in a sparkletronic gaming rotunda inside the Bellagio.
That's because Tim Arnold and the Las Vegas Pinball Collectors Club have made this a non-profit labor of love. They aren't interested in razzle-dazzle showmanship or a high-priced entry fee -- which is why you can enter for free anytime they're open and play one of their 141 pinball machines for a couple of quarters.
Joystiq took some time off during this year's CES to visit to the place, and we only left because they wouldn't let us stay overnight. The sheer amount of pinball games they have on display is staggering, including some extremely rare games like The Pinball Circus and Gottleib's two-player, head-to-head Challenger pinball machine.
Check out the highlights of our visit after the break, and make it a point to stop by the place if you're ever in Sin City. It's the most fun you can have without blowing your entire bankroll.
Gallery: Pinball Hall of Fame

Games ranged from the familiar -- like the uber-popular Addams Family pinball machine -- to the extremely rare, like the aforementioned The Pinball Circus. Just to put it in perspective, The Pinball Circus was developed by Williams Electronics in 1994 at a cost of $1.5 million dollars. It was an effort to break away from the "table" style and games produce a vertical pinball machine.

Another rare game they have waiting for your quarters is Gottleib's Challenger, from 1971. This is a head-to-head pinball machine that has a tilting playfield and plays a bit like soccer. If you're "kicking off," the playfield tilts down towards your end, and vice-versa. It's a really different way to square off against someone, and rather than trying to beat their high score on the same machine, you're literally trying to score via their goal, which they have to defend.

Of course, the personal highlight for this writer was the chance to play the greatest pinball machine ever made: The Machine: Bride of Pinbot. Through the course of the game you have to turn this robotic machine into a living, breathing woman. When you finally turn her fully human, the game comes to life with a beating heart.
If you have a love for pinball machines or just plain gaming in general, we can't recommend stopping by this place highly enough. Save your quarters.

Great place. As something of a pinbakk junkie, It was the first place I stopped on my last trip into Vegas. I only had an hour or so to spend there though, and the Twilight Zone machine was taken the whole time I was there. I'll have to stop in again next time I'm in the area.
Farmer @ Feb 6th 2009 2:50AM
This turns me on.
It is the most beautiful thing i've ever seen.
Being in Aus sucks.

When you guys are in San Francisco for GDC, you ought to check out the Musee Mecanique at Pier 43. It's pretty much the only cool thing in the vicinity of Fisherman's Wharf.

Pardon the freakish laugh you get when you go to the site.

Erm, Pier 45, I mean. Whoops.
TVGenius @ Feb 7th 2009 6:38PM
I usually spend 2 or 3 nights there each year when I go to NAB. And these are the only machines I lose quarters in when I go. I come from somewhere with few machines, and virtually none with all the parts working, so it's a welcome break to go one by one and play 140+ different games, all clean and well-maintained, and many I've never seen or heard of before. The first time I saw Pinball Circus, having heard of its existence but not that there was one at the HoF (let alone that you could play it) I about died when I walked in and saw it.
The scary part is that the HoF represents only about 8-10% of Tim Arnold's personal collection of games. And many nights, he's there at the HoF, tinkering away on one of the machines.
Nice to see an article from someone who actually appreciates it; most other sites I've seen mention it are usually too busy cracking jokes about pinball being outdated, and it's even better to see this from a video game site. :)
sawyerinatree @ Feb 6th 2009 1:09AM
lovvvve pinball. been meaning to go out there for some time.
Ayman @ Feb 6th 2009 1:09AM
why is one of the "Pinball machines" not a pinball
it looks more like the mechanical arm machine that you move around and get a gift
aj @ Feb 6th 2009 1:28AM
If they have that Star Trek: TNG pinball machine I'm moving in. I don't care.
Ninbrendo @ Feb 6th 2009 8:17AM
We had that table in the hole-in-the-mall arcade I used to manage some dozen-plus years ago. It required constant maintenance due to its popularity, but I loved fixing the damn thing!
Morgan @ Feb 8th 2009 5:26AM
I actually own one of these, and so does my friend. Got it for 400€ from a bar in southern Germany. It barely fitted into my Saab for the drive back to Norway =) Amazing machines, but they do demand quite a bit of maintenance.
Courtney @ Feb 6th 2009 1:29AM
Man, so many great memories going through that gallery. Would love to stop in there if I ever get back to Vegas.
BlaqueBeird @ Feb 6th 2009 1:30AM
Wow. The video of it coming to life was ridiculous.
Rogue5 @ Feb 6th 2009 1:33AM
I'll bet they have my first pinball machine i ever played...Playboy and my favorite one Addams family. I am definitely spending sometime there when i go to vegas again.
Mr Khan @ Feb 6th 2009 8:36AM
Addams Family pinball, fuck yeah. They have it at the rec center of a campground i used to go to. Made rainy camping days almost as fun as the sunny ones
Levi @ Feb 6th 2009 11:49AM
One of my favorite bars has a Addams Family pinball machine in it.

Damnit all I didn't know that was there...Would have been perfect for me to go to when I was 16 in Vegas. Oh well 21 is coming up next year, I'll try and remember to check that place out during any brief moment I'm not drunk or gambling. :)

Oh, shitstains. I was in Vegas last weekend and would love to have played the 80's magnificence that is Laser War. Alas, the ion cannon will remain unfired.

I went to Las Vegas for my birthday about 3 months ago, if I knew this was there I would've been there everyday!
So awesome!

Joystiq, you have successfully created the most confusing comment system, it's so friggen hard to tell what is a reply vs a new post. When there are only a few comments it's easy to get, but when there is a huge discussion going on with multiple people replying it's hard to see what's not a reply ect. Makes me dizzy (maybe its just my layout)
For example just scroll these comments: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/05/six-reasons-why-psn-is-the-best/
At first glance it's hard to differentiate. Love the new site though!
mr mobius @ Feb 6th 2009 7:20AM
It's easier than the old comment system to differentiate. Maybe depends on what browser you use.

I've never played a real pinball machine. Why are they considered the premium gaming choice for the pre-console era? I've heard some people describe them as being art in their own right.
Where I live, even back when I was very young, I never saw any pinball machines around arcades.
ptuck874 @ Feb 6th 2009 11:23AM
dude, you must go to a truck stop or somewhere that has some older stuff, pinballs rule man, i used to spend a full 3 hours at an arcade playing terminator 2 pinball using just 1 quarter, those were the dayz :)
rokobungi @ Feb 6th 2009 7:27AM
I have a Bride of Pinbot (in fact the cow 'Easter egg' clip is mine.
) it's a difficult game to get any real points on. you have to get 4
shots in a row up that ramp without losing either ball or you start
back at the beginning and with the amount the ball is bouncing around
in the video I think he's got those outlanes closed up pretty tight.
in fact the cow 'Easter egg' clip is mine.
what sucks is that when the head motor isn't working you don't get the transformation lightshow. I've got the motor just gotta rip up half the playfield to get it installed.

My fiancé and I spoke not-so-jokingly of eloping in Las Vegas to avoid the stereotypical shitty, boring and expensive wedding my parents want to have...but then realized there wasn't much for us to enjoy there.
...Maybe we need to reconsider.
Professor Lario @ Feb 6th 2009 9:42AM
Reconsider - if only to avoid the stereotypical wedding. : )
darthmolen @ Feb 6th 2009 9:23AM
I could literally spend all day in that place, huge pinball junkie.
Bah. Addams Family Pinball game is overrated ;)
Ok, here are my top 3 pinball games of all times (I know, not generational because these were around when I was playing pinball)
1)Twilight Zone - what's not to love about this table? The magneto reverse top-table, three paddles, clock mode, great sound effect, etc.
2)Dr. Who - Gotta love the telephone booth elevator that would rise up and reveal the three tunnels.. plus the sound effects were just mesmerizing
3) Star Wars 1992 Pinball - Death Star Runs anyone? Pluse the At-At and the X-wing hanging out were awesome to play. Sorry, this is one of my favorite of all times
Andy @ Feb 7th 2009 3:14PM
While I love the Adams Family table, I'm with you on the Twilight Zone and Star Wars tables. Those 2, with Adams Family, are in my top 3 tables of all time.

I got to stop in here last year, and I'll be going back again in another month or so. The place is pretty awesome if you love pinball!
My fav pinball machine is easily Dr. Who, and theirs was working perfect. So I dumped a bunch of money into that. They have some reallllllllllly old ones in there, that really aren't much fun. They also had one that was a prototype that had I think four levels of play. It was pretty amazing, you move the ball up to each level with a whole new set of flippers on each level. It was never made because the company went out of business before they could produce it, I think. But the game was pretty amazing.
Brian Turner @ Feb 6th 2009 10:21AM
I also went there last year, and it is totally worth the trip off the beaten path. My then girl friend slept in the car while I played. I didn't care. I will be going back next week and I cant wait.
Pro Tip: Make sure to pick up some swag while there. I bought a couple of totally sweet pinball coasters. Help these guys out with their non-profit labor of love.
arrakisman @ Feb 6th 2009 10:34AM
For those who have been there... did you spot Midevil Madness or Junkyard?
Jangofatt @ Feb 6th 2009 11:06AM
They have both
ptuck874 @ Feb 6th 2009 11:25AM
junkyard! yes! that one is a blast too!!! :)

ARLIGHT JOYSTIQ!
I love in Vegas and the Pinball Hall of Fame is the greatest thing this city has to offer. And there's a $3 theatre that shows old movies right next door. It's just the best place ever.

That looks on-par with Ground Kontrol in Portland.
Stoner1313 @ Feb 6th 2009 12:12PM
I own The Machine: Bride of Pinbot, and it is one of the greatest tables ever made without a doubt.
stimp @ Feb 6th 2009 9:59PM
Me too!! but man i had a hell of a time keeping it playable, had so many problems the back right "pinbot" playfield entrance was screwed up and the scoreboard display broke twice! everything is working ok now thankfully. but what a pain in the arse when things break. I can only do so many things and pinball repair people are hard to find these days :(
Levi @ Feb 6th 2009 12:19PM
Man, I just went to Vegas, and I swore it would be the last time I ever stepped foot in the town due to the lack of stuff like this. I would have loved to check this place out instead of wasting time and money on the strip. And, it's close to one of my favorite bars in the world, the Double Down. Mmmm, bacon martinis.
Murry @ Feb 6th 2009 1:31PM
I just went to Pinball Hall of Fame a few months ago and was one the best things me and my friends did. If you are even somewhat into pinball you owe to youself to go. Here's some of my tips:
1. It's not close to the strip so you will most likely take a cab. Get to know your cabbie and try and arrange a pickup time.
2. The bar/resturant next door is called Putters. They have great food and drink and won't kill your wallet.
3. Plan on spending a bunch of time there cuz it's awsome!!
t @ Feb 6th 2009 9:43PM
Bride of Pinbot!!! enough said!

I can't believe no one has...
He's a pinball wizard there has to be twist
A pinball wizard's got such a supple wrist
How do you think he does it?
I don't know
What makes him so good?

I've lived in Las Vegas for about 3 years, and that was one of the first places I went to when we first moved here. My dad found it online and we went to check it out...cool place, very nice fellas that run the place. What's sad is that most of my friends here in Vegas have leaved here most of their lives, and never heard of the place. So I'm glad you're giving it the recognition it deserves. I love that place.
