The latest post issued from rogue Bob's Game creator Robert Pelloni's secret lair features something we were quite sure we'd never see -- no, he didn't give up, but 25 weeks after sending his application for DS development authorization, he finally got his letter from Nintendo. The text of the note is identical to that received by rejected WiiWare developer Xiotex Studios.
His entire (not quite) 100-day protest was based on the fact that Nintendo had yet to respond to his application for a Nintendo DS SDK, so official communication from the company is, in one sense, vindication for Pelloni. But in another, more accurate sense, it's a rejection letter.
The text of the letter offers clues as to why Pelloni was not approved: Nintendo expects "secure business facilities, sufficient equipment and staffing, financial stability and other attributes that would distinguish the developer." We assume that a sealed office that you pretend is an alien spaceship does not constitute "secure business facilities."
Even more telling is the statement that Nintendo "provides Authorized Developers with highly confidential information" and thus "exercises a very high level of discretion" when choosing to whom it grants SDK access. If he really has heard back from Nintendo (and we must express a modicum of doubt in regard to anything Bob's Game-related), then Bob's constant blogging of his own wait for approval seemingly ruined his chances of receiving that approval.

''Thank you for your interest for Authorized Developer status for Nintendo DS.
We have completed our evaluation of your application and are unable to offer your company Authorized Developer status at the present time.
In evaluating developers, Nintendo looks for relevant game development experience.
In addition, Nintendo looks for secure business facilities, sufficient equipment and staffing, financial stability and other attributes that would distinguish the developer.
Nintendo provides Authorized Developers with highly confidential information and many of Nintendo's Licensees rely on recommendations and referrals by Nintendo to Authorized Developers.
For these reasons, Nintendo exercises a very high level of discretion in approving only a select number of applicants.
In accordance with our policies, we are not able to re-evaluate requests for developer status for at least six months.
Again, we appreciate your interest, and welcome any questions or concerns you might have regarding this decision.

This kid is a whiny bastard... some people also spend countless years on developing their own games only to simply release it as freeware or homebrew. If he was that concerned for people to play his game he would've released it for free by now.

If he'd just kept his mouth shut, released his game on one or more open systems, then worked his way onto indie-friendly closed systems, he might have been able to get Nintendo to take him seriously. He also should have formed a company properly, which he shows no evidence, at least publicly, of having done.
The long and short of it is, his brat attitude and approach of trying to run before he could walk cost him his dream. Yuu lose. Better luck next time.

The way I see it, now he'll finally give up (and possibly just publish the game online as a homebrew) or go completely bats**t crazy, hijack a plane and ram it into the Nintendo building. =]

So lets say he hypothetically got an SDK he writes his code and keeps all nintendos dirty little secrets like a good nintendrone ....... then what
from what I can tell there are no publishers, manufacturing or distributors breaking down his door .... so he has compiled cods and thats about it.
If he wanted anything to come from his "game" above homebrew (and he could probably find some decent homebrew SDK around) he should pitch his idea to a larger company and IF they like it, use it as an In to get a job with them.
Otherwise wait for the DSI and see if Nintendo has any SDK they put out for people to make their own apps & games for the DSI.

This is completely irrelevant, but your avatar is made of win.
On-topic: My pet theory is that the whole protest - the sit-in, the Nintendo World incident, everything - is a viral ad to get the word out about Bob's Game.
From Bob's blog, on January 15th:
"This is the end of my pitch to Nintendo of America- which Mr. Tom Prata, Senior Director of Project Development, authorized on Feb 22, 2008.
Thanks to all Nintendo staff and to Nintendo's PR department for allowing this to
continue as long as it has.
If Nintendo decides not to proceed, "bob's game" will be released for iPhone, Android, and possibly OpenPandora, XBLA, Steam, and PSP.
I am a Nintendo fan, and I would like to see "bob's game" released on the Nintendo DS more than any of these systems.
Please let Nintendo know if you would like to show your support for "bob's game" being released on the DS.
In this age of nearly infinite information flow and instant turnover, getting a message out there is nearly impossible, even with millions of dollars for advertising.
Yet I have succeeded at this and caught the attention of nearly the entire online gaming world- from a locked room with a cell phone and no budget whatsoever.
If this does not demonstrate to Nintendo the determination, passion, creativity, and ingenuity that I am capable of, then I don't know what will.
Unorthodox, of course. I had to do something completely new, something that hadn't been tried before- and it worked.
bobsgame.com has now had over 1 million unique visitors. My mission has been a success.
In other words,
Thank Yuu for playing.
THANKS, REGGIE!"
Judging by this and some other entries, I'm guessing that most of the weirder stuff on Bob's blog (the whole "insanity" thing, for example) was planned out. I don't know if Nintendo turning him down was for reals, but even if it was, we'll be seeing this in one form or another, probably before 2009 is done.
Even if the video game development thing doesn't work out for Bob, I think he could get a well-paying job at an advertising agency. Most of Joystiq has swallowed this story hook, line, and sinker, after all...

Just start selling the game on your website already. I'll give you 5 bucks via paypal right now for a download. I'll give you 20 for a copy on a cart with the cool packaging.
That'll be 5-20 bucks more than you'd ever see going thru Nintendo.
If it's really as good as you say then there is a chance that some developer might take a gamble and pick it up like No Gravity for the PSP.
But really, change the name.

You know, I don't think a lot of us here can fully understand what Bob's gone through. I'm not trying to defend his behavior or anything. Far be it from me to understand why someone would throw business cards around the Nintendo Store.
But antics aside, I think everyone has to admit that what Bob endured is a bit harsh for Nintendo. He had multiple conversations with them, teleconferences with them, and even met with them in person. All of that, for what? So Nintendo could sit around and just ignore the guy?
I would be mad as hell if someone lead me on like that, especially if it was involving something I was extremely passionate about.

@Rocketboy: Ignoring him was the harsh part. If Nintendo knew they were going to reject him, they should've done so instead of leaving him hanging.

Hey Stix.
Welcome to real life. And if Bob really wants to become a game developer(which isn't really likely after all that has happened) he has to grow up and accept the fact that no game company owes him anything regardless of how many hours he put into his precious game.

@Vegeta: I've had my fair share of lack of replies for various things, so I understand that it happens. That doesn't make it right. If a company says they will reply in 6-8 weeks, then they should do so (if anything for the simple fact that the company said they would).
Really, how hard would it have been for Nintendo to send him that letter within the 6-8 weeks timeframe? Obviously, the letter itself has nothing original in it, since we have evidence of another rejection letter.
Despite anyone's optimistic, pessimistic, or "realistic" viewpoints of the world, Nintendo doesn't have an excuse for not responding within the given timeframe. Since many people (myself included) already assumed Nintendo was likely to reject his request, it's pretty mean-spirited for Nintendo to make Bob wait 25 weeks just to find out what they could've told him months before.

Do you really WANT the video game industry to become like the music industry, Negatron? I WORK for the music industry, and I can't stand us. If video games become any more like music, it's liable to become unpalatable to me as a pasttime.
I suppose it does have the advantage of growing up in the internet age, so it already has that "long tail indie" angle that the music industry (or rather, the music non-industry) is just starting to benefit from. But still - I would prefer to see my hobby not decline to the music labels' level.

Good I'm gad this guy got denied. Props to him and all for making a game, but he's seriously acting like a b*tch. He threw a temper-tantrum during his sit in, then ran-sacked the Nintendo store. The Nintendo store has nothing to do with the company, its like raiding a Toys R Us because you want them to build a toy. It's a store not a office. Congrats Bob, some underpaid kids had to clean up your mess at their crap jobs. Then on his web site he writes stuff like 'I'm coming for you Reggie.' Really immature and not professional, If I was Nintendo I would never give him the Dev. Trust me from experience, a company does NOT want to associate itself with people and behavior like this.

I was actually sympathetic to this fellow before I saw that he was some kind of silly goth who looked none too smart.
That said, the game really does look promising. But as others have said, there's plenty of ways of releasing it on PC or possibly other platforms, whether monetized or not.
Assuming there's no way to sell it, well, he might as well release it for free -- at least then he might be taken seriously the next time around. (If, you know, he hasn't ruined his credibility forever by now.)

He should be like the guy who made Cave Story. Years later, after releasing it as freeware for the PC, it's going on the Wii as WiiWare. He didn't have to be crazy or go through great lengths to be seen by Nintendo.

On the plus side, maybe he'll just release the damn thing to the internet now? He's pretty crazy, but crazy people often make interesting widgets. I'd like to see what he's come up with already.

The whole thing was/has been planned out. No Bob didn't really go insane. No he never had a legitimate chance of getting signed on at Nintendo. Yes he will be releasing the game on day 100 for purchase. He's done a brilliant job at getting 'advertising' so you can troll all you like and call him an asshole but way more people know about and will buy his game now than they ever would have before.
