Bankrupt World of Goo publisher won't axe employees
We nearly reached for the Tums whilst perusing this story -- it's been so long since we've heard any heartwarming news regarding the gaming industry that we confused the sensation with a mild case of heartburn. A representative from Brighter Minds Media, the publisher behind last year's highly lauded slime-flinging puzzler World of Goo, recently announced that the publisher would not be laying off any of its employees -- despite the fact that the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week. Though they're going through what sounds like a fairly radical "reorganization", they won't be extending the already depressingly long gaming industry bread line. Good form, Brighter Minds.

That breadline is nowhere near as long as most other industries. That said, I'm glad it isn't going to grow as a result of these financial difficulties.

I'm very happy, nobody lose their job, since I think they do a pretty good job. ( well those are publisher not developers....I guess they could release the game for Xbox live arcade and PSN and give it more light time so boooo).

I'm happy that the studio that wrote the game, 2D Boy, is doing well...
If I may ask, what was the role of Brighter Minds Media? They didn't create the game... Did they provide financing or just retail services?

I'm especially glad because World of Goo is the best reason I've had to turn on my Wii in a long time.

These people are publishers. They had nothing to do with the development, or digital distribution, of World of Goo. If you spot a disc of World Of Goo, then that's Brighter Minds' work.

Quick, buy their game! They're actually saving employees :O.
Bowser Rogozhin @ Feb 7th 2009 11:34AM
These people have been pumping out atrocious software over a sustained period of time. Human level aside, we shouldn't be celebrating this news.
Any consolation from this slowdown in credit would be the fact that ill-performing businesses go under, taking their shoddy-shovely ways with them. Hopefully they'll go into liquidation, the employees find alternative jobs, and we see the back of this sorry company.

Agreed.
If it weren't for Brighter Minds being associated with World of Goo, I am almost 100% positive that anybody reading this site would not know, or care that this company existed. If you think EA produces shovelware, you have not seen this companies catalog.

hello @ Feb 9th 2009 1:04AM
atrocious software? really? just because the games don't interest you, doesn't mean that they're crap.
god forbid developers make games that don't interest Lord Bowser Rogozhin
mcatrage @ Feb 7th 2009 11:37AM
So now instead of a few people losing their jobs all of them will soon.

pedasn @ Feb 7th 2009 12:07PM
i really like that game, and i really like their desissions. I'll pick up some wiipoints on monday and make it a gift for my friends. That's my donation.
i hope they will hang in there long enough to become liquid again :)
Smurfy @ Feb 7th 2009 12:13PM
Brighter Minds don't get any cut of the WiiWare sales, they only distribute the boxed copies.
Game_playa @ Feb 7th 2009 3:34PM
Buy it directly off their website, or from steam
ColinXL @ Feb 7th 2009 1:27PM
Won't fire its employees huh? Probably can't afford the pink slips.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Feb 7th 2009 2:06PM
Go buy their game!
