Joystiq hands-on: Sonic and the Black Knight (Wii)

In case you haven't heard, Sonic now has a sword. Those spines on his back? Pretty pointless. Swinging that sword requires you to shake the Wiimote, which we're sure you're already aware, gets pretty tired after a while. Despite that, Black Knight isn't a terrible game. It's definitely an improvement over Secret Rings, though you'd expect that considering the two and a half year gap between the titles.
The horizontal Wiimote-only control system of Secret Rings has been replaced with the far superior Wiimote + Nunchuck system. As a result Sonic is no longer on rails and you can move him forwards and backwards as you please, though the levels have remained largely linear, with the exception of some arena-style duels. There are plenty of levels to explore, with incentives to go back to each of them and complete specific tasks and collect more followers.
These followers act as experience points in what seems to be a pretty deep RPG system. There are different proficiencies to learn, items that require identifying (though, for the most part, these seemed to do very little) and a knight ranking system. Sound like a Sonic game to you? Nor us.
Instead of picking up rings throughout the level you'll pick up yellow fairies, which will then be immediately converted into rings. Seems completely arbitrary to us, but maintains the feeling that the developers might've wanted to try something new, remembered they were called "Sonic Team" and shoehorned the blue hedgehog and his friends in at the last minute. That's probably not what happened, though. Probably.
Sonic's pals all make appearances under various Arthurian guises, with some being playable later in the game. There's also a multiplayer battle mode, though we didn't try it out. As you progress through the game you'll unlock more content for this mode, along with other bonus extras such as background music. So it looks like there'll be plenty to keep you busy.
We're not sure how many people buy Sonic games for the story, but in case you're one of them we'll suggest that you look elsewhere. Black Knight's target demographic is skewed towards the younger end of the spectrum and this is obvious from the story. Cutscenes range from Final Fantasy-esque FMVs (thought these seemed rare) to pretty ink-and-paint images, which fade between each other to give the impression of animation where there is none.
Sonic and the Black Knight may feel at times like it's having a bit of an identity crisis but it looks like there's a pretty playable game once you get past the whole "why am I Sonic again?" thing. It looks reasonably pretty and the controls work fairly well, even despite waggle-to-attack. It may be worth picking up this March -- and don't worry, there's not a Werehog in sight.

The raping of Sonic continues.
Instead of trying to reinvent him as a secret agent, knight & wherewolf why don't they simply make a true current gen remake of the original 2-D platforming adventures from the genesis era? It seems so easy on the surface but all SEGA wants to do is throw Sonic in these ridiculous situations and story lines.
Mario may be in some crazy themes as well but they usually work and are fun to play. This Sonic crap is always lame and cliched.
Why not make an HD 2-D LBP esque Sonic adventure?
Mr Khan @ Feb 7th 2009 4:17PM
It seems to be rather tastefully done in this case, as i said in my post below. The sword supplements the traditional Sonic experience, and it still seems to be just about running, just with an extra piece of hardware. Secret Rings was pure win (despite what the haters say), and this game looks somewhat better in its incorporation of traditional Sonic elements (sans the sword, but the sword is incorporated in a traditional way) and its refinement of the system used in Secret Rings
Doing a 2D Sonic would, i think, only be good as a moneymaker for SEGA if they did it on the main consoles. Kinda like Mega Man 9 was. It would be a great game, certainly, but it would do nothing to grow the franchise, it would play strictly off nostalgia, which doesn't work for an industry that's growing as rapidly as this one is
Jon A. @ Feb 7th 2009 4:20PM
Why are you so upset? This is just a (successful) spinoff. None of what they do in this game will effect future Sonic games.
ice~ @ Feb 7th 2009 4:24PM
a la Bionic Commando Rearmed style remake?
And Jon A. How can you call this game successful when it hasn't even been released yet???
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, Ultrastiq Revolutionary) @ Feb 7th 2009 4:29PM
@ice:Because it has "Sonic" in the title?
Jon A. @ Feb 7th 2009 4:30PM
The series itself is pretty successful. Granted, there's only the one game - Sonic and the Secret Rings - in the marketplace.
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Feb 7th 2009 4:32PM
I disagree whole heartedly.
Imagine a LBP type of 2-D side scroller with all kinds of crazy magical worlds and puzzles for Sonic to solve. I'm not saying it needs to be balls to the wall speed at every turn (you need some of that to though) just some simple platforming thats well done. The problem with these Sonic games now is they are all gimmick based pieces of junk. Do you actually think any Sonic game this generation has helped to grow the series? All it has done is run it into the ground and is always cringe inducing. Even Dark Brotherhood which was made by freaking Bioware was lame. I would say Dark Brotherhood did more to grow the series than every other sonic game this generation combined and it was average at best.
Give me a 2-D sonic with beautiful graphics in all these different crazy styleized worlds with a heavy emphasis on platforming and puzzle solving. There will also be some speed sections and even mini games thrown in there. Thats the recipe for success to grow the series in my opinion. Keep it Sonic but just bring it into the modern day and age. Not this gimmick based knight, wherewolf and special agent bull*hit.
If you thought Secret Rings was aweoms thats great. It's not my place to tell you what your supposed to think is good or bad. For the majority of other people it wasn't what we wanted.
They need to go back to the roots of Sonic and build off that experience. They need to update that experience into a modern gaming Sonic adventure. They don't need to turn Sonic into someone who fights with guns, swords or by means of midnight transformation. It's actually a simple concept but SEGAs problem is they haven't given people anything close to what represents Sonic. It doesn't have to be an exact HD remake of the older Sonic game or anything. It just needs to be what made Sonic great in the first place. He has lost his way.
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Feb 7th 2009 4:37PM
Ice,
That would be a great idea to promote the next gen Sonic game I am thinking of.
@Jon A
I'm upset because all this time and energy has been wasted on total trash games. SEGA has pretty much ruined the image of Sonic by making nothing but half hearted spin offs that should have nothing to do with Sonic. Maybe I just remember a different time when Sonic actually meant it would be a good game.
At least the Sega classics collection is releasing soon. That way I can re-live the glory years of SEGA and Sonic.
Dave @ Feb 7th 2009 5:33PM
Every sequel is a rape.
DBuck_Eye @ Feb 7th 2009 5:34PM
LBP-esque platformer? Oh right, because the actual platforming was the best part of that game... not.
Baby J Penn (PSN johnnynumber5) @ Feb 7th 2009 7:15PM
D_Buckeye
Is that the best you can come up with?
jumpshot @ Feb 9th 2009 4:23PM
You know, I agree with your idea of making a new Sonic in LBP style. It would be incredible fun to make our own levels too! And to be honest, I think the gameplay style of the original lends itself better to the LBP style, especially since Sonic's main thing is speed.
Mr Khan @ Feb 7th 2009 4:12PM
reasonably pretty? I think it's slightly insane how much graphical effort SEGA has put into this one, especially since Sonic Unleashed's Wii version felt so phoned in
Though you said the ancillary characters would be playable in the story mode later on? Conflicting reports have been heard about whether or not Shadow and Knuckles would be playable in the single player mode, or only in the battle mode. Interesting to have this one confirmed. I would certainly love to actually use Knuckles in a Sonic game for once (the first time since Sonic Heroes, iirc).
Neatly, though, it looks as though the sword supplements the speed, as opposed to slowing down the course of the game. Kinda like how you used the sword on horseback in Twilight Princess, you just sorta slash at stuff as you pass.
el serpiente @ Feb 7th 2009 6:47PM
You're supposed to make excuses for a game AFTER it comes out, not before.
Rhamsey @ Feb 7th 2009 4:17PM
i feel so bad for sonic.
if i was sega, after releasing the very sweet sonic's mega collection (or was it sega's?) thing, id remake sonic adventure battle series, and add some online chao racing/trading. at least it would sell better than the recent sonic games.
Jon A. @ Feb 7th 2009 4:24PM
I'm pretty sure that both Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Secret Rings sold a million copies each worldwide.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, Ultrastiq Revolutionary) @ Feb 7th 2009 4:28PM
you realize that it was due to Sonic Adventure that we now have this...this abomination? And don't even get me started on Battle
Xta Large (Formerly Fatass) @ Feb 7th 2009 5:21PM
Bashing Battle around here'll get ya in loads of trouble, bro. We've got a lot o folks ready to defend that game to the death.
sam @ Feb 7th 2009 6:07PM
@Jon: If you believe VG Chartz, slightly over 2 million. (Making it the #5 third-party game on Wii.)
It's also marginally better reviewed than the more recent Sonic Unleashed, with 69 on metacritic, where Unleashed got 66 on Wii and 61/54 on the other platforms.
Doing a metacritic search for 'Sonic', ordered most-recent-first (how I got the above numbers), shows an impressive swathe of yellow and red...
sam @ Feb 7th 2009 6:08PM
@me: duh, if it wasn't clear, I was talking about Secret Rings. I don't know about sales for Unleashed, although obviously selling a million is a bit less impressive when it's across three platforms.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, Ultrastiq Revolutionary) @ Feb 7th 2009 4:23PM
well, seeing how the director worked on ANOTHER "not Sonic" game (Sonic Adventure, come and get me Sonic Superfans) I'm not surprised. Its seems like recently Sonic Team has practically been begging SEGA to kill them. But nooooo, thanks to the beaten housewives (AKA Sonic Superfans), we may never see a proper burial for one Sonic the Hedgehog
Greyseal @ Feb 7th 2009 4:29PM
Are they kidding at this point? Does anybody at Sega read reviews of their games? Or do these turds actually sell so well that vomiting up more of them are a smart decision?
I was part of the Sega faithful right through the Dreamcast era. When they went software-only, I was at least excited that their brilliant games could finally be played by everybody. But as soon as they ditched the hardware business, they also lost their marbles.
They need ground Sonic back in his own universe, and stop copy-pasting him into human cities, Arthurian legend, and whatever other idiotic places they want to put him next. The Mario series has always benefitted from its sense of place in the Mushroom Kingdom, and Sonic would be very wise to reboot from home.
CaptainProtonX @ Feb 7th 2009 4:32PM
Remember that first time you played Sonic Adventure?
It was the most delicious moment of my life.
But Sega intends on shitting on it at every turn. I won't let them. Every Sonic game that comes out just makes me go back to my Dreamcast.
That's right...DREAMCAST.
Someday Sonic will be prime time again. Someday.

Roto13 @ Feb 7th 2009 5:30PM
Sega's press site lists "The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games" for "consoles, handhelds, and PC" so it's probably not going to be another Mario vs. Sonic game. And even if it was, I doubt it would count to Jawmuncher since there's already a Mario vs. Sonic Olympics game. (How's about Brawl?)
Moptimus Slime (Leader of the Ryan Scott Defense Force, Ultrastiq Revolutionary) @ Feb 7th 2009 8:17PM
no, they have Mario & Sonic, then they have a separate Olympic licensed game they release on other platforms
Aero @ Feb 7th 2009 4:38PM
From the looks of the article, this sounds like Sonic and the Secret Rings with better controls which is a thumbs up from me.
Jacksons @ Feb 7th 2009 4:46PM
Silly game for Sonic to be in, but it sounds like it's at least worth a peek.
Ahmad Yasser @ Feb 7th 2009 4:56PM
I say this game is racist. Can't you guys see it's called the 'Black' Knight?
/me ducks
Anyway, let me know when Sega makes a Sonic HD Remix, that's all I need in a Sonic game. Until then, Sega can keep their shitty Sonic games. Unfortunately, that'll never happen, as these games sell well to kids, and that's all that matters.
Roto13 @ Feb 7th 2009 4:52PM
If it's basically Sonic and the Secret Rings only better, and Secret Rings was a pretty good game, I don't know why are complaining about it. Oh, wait, yes I do. Because the fact that it's Sonic automatically means that it sucks to a lot of people, despite the fact that they haven't played it. Nevermind.
Xta Large (Formerly Fatass) @ Feb 7th 2009 5:16PM
"Because the fact that it's Sonic automatically means that it sucks to a lot of people, despite the fact that they haven't played it."
Why is that the mindset of those who defend Sonic around here? In every thread where Sonic as a series is being bashed, people come in and are like "Oh, I know why you don't like Sonic! YOU MUST NOT HAVE PLAYED IT" or make posts that suggest that. I'm not saying that there aren't plenty of people out there who bash Sonic games without playing them. I'm just saying that the notion that thats the only way one could bash Sonic or that the whole 'Recent Sonic Sucks' mindset is only perpetuated by those who haven't played them is ridiculous. I myself have been subject to that way of thinking, which is why it kinda irks me... despite the fact that I can tell people exactly why I haven't liked any of the recent Sonic games (and that's including Rush and Rush Adventure), or the fact that I can link to reviews I myself have written on the games, people still act as though I 'hate on Sonic' because it's the kool thing to do. It's not that it's the kool thing to do - it's that Sonic has just been getting worse over the years.
Roto13 @ Feb 7th 2009 5:27PM
"Why is that the mindset of those who defend Sonic around here? In every thread where Sonic as a series is being bashed, people come in and are like "Oh, I know why you don't like Sonic! YOU MUST NOT HAVE PLAYED IT" or make posts that suggest that."
I think I'm ready to state as a fact that the vast majority of the people complaining about this game haven't played it, considering the fact that it isn't out yet.
Lee @ Feb 7th 2009 5:50PM
Bingo. Sacred Rings was quite good. Doubt I'll ever play it again but it reminded me that Sega haven't completely lost it.
If schedules allow I wouldn't entirely mind this game either.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 7th 2009 7:39PM
Secret rings was great but I never understood why you had to unlock better controls but it was sweet.
Now that this gives me a perfect excuse to review Unleashed.
Is not perfect but it has some pretty awesome moments, the Werehog (Hogwolf) thing is actually very well executed. The actual running is where the game shows its flaws but is not unplayable in fact is a mix between delicious 2D sonic and Secret Rings 3d which is agin a good thing but sadly it also has a pinch of Sonic 2006 (Which are the worst’s parts of the game) .
Underrated, unappreciated, people hate it (IGN can got o hell) for some reason? (See Mortal Kombat)
I never bother to read the comments about Sonic and Mortal Kombat because mostly are from buttheads who never played the game and want to be cool on the.
I say that if you are into platformers and really hard games Sonic Unleash is a great choice especially because is cheap and it has some awesome visual design like Empire city (Its New York but it was also called that way in Need For Speed III: Hot Pursuit) and Chu-nan. It also borrows some elements from Sky roads a kick ass game from the DOS era.
WPstart @ Feb 7th 2009 5:18PM
Secret Rings was good so I have no doubt that this will be also.

i used to love sonic games, but this is starting to get ridiculous, i think sega should pull the plug on sonic and move on unless they are going to make a more traditional sonic game, honestly, how sweet would that be? take a page from capcoms book and do what they did with bionic commando, id buy that in a heartbeat, until then? rip sonic.
Snowblind @ Feb 7th 2009 6:44PM
I really don't understand how anyone could defend Secret Rings, at the very best it was okay, and the same could be said for the majority of the Sonic games released in recent year, it still wasn't worth playing.
Even if it does turn out to be *good* I just don't care at this point. Any fond memories I once had for this hedgehog have been destroyed be what seems to be an endless wave of bad games.
They need to give him a rest for a while and then bring him back, prefrebly with an above average game. There's just nothing left of his reputation at this point.
Mr Khan @ Feb 7th 2009 7:27PM
Nobody should defend Secret Rings because frankly it doesn't need defending. It's greatness should stand on its own, especially since they took Secret Rings, added a werehog mode, and called it Sonic Unleashed.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 7th 2009 7:48PM
Sonic like Mortal Kombat are series that if they ever reach what they once were nobody is going to take them seriously because like Duke Nukem Forever they became puns in the Gamming community and they rather see them failing to add comments like "why are you even trying" instead of trying them.
Secret Rings was good but I never felt like going back now that this looks okay, I'm playing Unleashed even after reading all the negative reviews (You can’t say no to cheap gaming) I most say WTH with all the reviews? a 4.0 from Ign ; that's the same sh*t 1up pulled with UG&G and NWN2 and people keep reminding them that not to mention they lose credibility.
Pro Tip: Never Review a game based on the interbutts Drama just do your f*cking job.
About Sonic Unleashed I give it a 7.5,Is actually good but it needs more polish, some levels will kick your ass and some of them are quite easy but there a few ones that are actually AAA material like Empire City, it always gives you the feeling you are about to die. Exciting stuff.
jonjon72 @ Feb 7th 2009 7:15PM
Too bad Sonic doesn't have the same respect for its mascot as Nintendo has for Mario.
