Toys R Us selling 13 mo. Xbox Live Gold subscription cards for $30
75
Have you been Left 4 Dead-ing by your lonesome? Halo 3-ing without helpers? Castle Crashers-ing with no cohorts? Yaris-ing by yourself? Okay, that last one didn't exactly work, but you catch our drift -- if you're in the market for an extension (or revivification) of your Xbox Live Gold subscription, Toys R Us is selling the 12 month (plus one bonus month) subscription cards for 40 percent off, or $29.99, from now until Saturday. This deal is applicable either online or in your local brick-and-mortar TRU, but only one of those options affords you the opportunity to ride on a tiny, delightful carousel. Choose wisely.

But it costs a quarter more to ride the tiny ride, which would surely collapse under my fat ass. A price well worth it.

if sold out then just grab a flyer ad from Toys R Us & head to Best Buy for the price match. my local best buy said they won't price match without the flyer that you must bring in (though before cst serv booth would have it).

that sucks mehn... i feel Best Buy is starting to flex its muscles now as Circuit City won't be around soon. but as for them actually taking the time to call the other store is cRAZY.

They've always called the other store. They did that a couple years ago for me with Rainbow Six Vegas when it was on sale at Circuit City.

I got the Rock Band full kit from Best Buy 2 months ago. It was on sale at Toys RUS for $100 and I printed the ad, took it to Best Buy, and they priced matched for me without calling Toys RUS. I guess it varies from store to store.

You had me at tiny carousel... however the xbox live card not so much, I'm a Steam powered person and for buying left for dead on it, I will not have to go alone ever!

As much as I don't want to remind everybody b/c I need to run down to TRU to get an ad and grab one of these cards myself, but yeah, the only retailer who will legitimately back up this ad is the great evil known as Walmart. They're at least good for that, but you must have a copy of the ad, no photocopies.
BTW, do these Live subscription cards ever expire? Maybe it's a good idea to stockpile them at this price (grab maybe 2, not 15 or anything, lol). Plus I have one missing from my apartment I still haven't found....sadness.

You can buy multiple cards and redeem the codes all at once; the months remaining on your Live subscription will add up appropriately.

I just wish M$ would go free and not try to nickel and dime every single consumer who owns the 360.

^ That's the thing. I don't see it offering any more than the PSN does. But maybe that's just me. *shrugs*
also, I never like the idea of "paid subscriptions" b/c then I always worry about getting online to get my money's worth. Which i really didn't this year. Out of the 13 month subscription I probably played all of 2 weeks, lol (all I can say is, work sucks ass).
If they're going to charge, it might be nice to offer a pay-as-you-go option (say, $1 for 24 hours), for those of us who don't use the 360 that much.

@ Strategy
I wish there was a 24 hr option b/c I never know how busy work's going to be, and I already have the PSN covering most of my online gaming needs.
At the 1 day access rate of $1.00, MS would be earning quite a bit of money, as that's 4x the rate they charge for the 1 month access at a cost of $8.00.
Anyhow, this is all nit-picking. it's not like I can't afford it, but I just felt like I threw away $40 on nothing for 2008.

PSN doesn't cover my needs, free or not. But then again, I am not enamored with the PS3 and believe all that Sony babbles on about, comparatively, XBL offers a great deal of product/service for the money, and I am happy to pay for it. Though, I haven't paid for it for over a year and neither has my wife, we are both "paid up" till 2010 lmao... And with this deal, maybe 2011 ;)
So much for complaining about Live prices ;p Its the same as people who honestly think you NEED the 100.00 WiFi adaptor and try to use that against the 360 lmfao... You can do the same for 25 using the orig. XBOX WiFi adaptor, and it works the same including 360 menu based setup.... Not to mention other solutions.

gold live is a rip off. multilayer gaming should be free like most other games on other systems and pcs out there. if you're paying $60 for a game unless it's a mmorpg why should we be paying to play online.
in the long run you're paying more $$ vs the ps3 to get your console be online capable.
....
lets see. say you own the system for 10 yrs.
-ps3 x 10 yr online = free + $400 for console (this includes the bells and whistles)
-xbox360 x 10 yr online = $500 + $200 for console. (sorry u gotta buy anything extra separately, so this number could go way up)
microsoft plays the attachment game. it's a rip off thats why after my original xbox i never bought a 360 and got a ps3 instead.
consumers are stupid thinking they are getting a deal for $200 but don't realize all the attachments and subscriptions they are paying for in the long run.

yeah, unfortunately the 360 has a few exclusives that I actually want to play, though that's rapidly decreasing in number.
Besides, other 360 owners would shoot holes in your arguments b/c they'd say, "oh, it won't last 10 years, the Xbox 720 will be out by that time..."
At which point maybe MS will raise the subscription rate to $60/year instead of the retail $50, hahaha.

ur pricing is not fair. $500? hm there's the 20GB hardrive, which was $30 if u had the arcade console and signed up for the deal. $30 for xbox live.... and if ur spoiled you can get the official wireless adapter for 70-100$.
That adds up to $130 if you're a smart shopper looking for sales.
wireless is not needed on the 360, and even so, there are cheaper alternatives, such as using a dd-wrt enabled router.

PS3's online service is shit? That's funny, I play on it nearly every day and it seems to work fine for me.
In fact, it's been down less often than Live over the last year.
The bandwidth sometimes isn't great. Depends on what is being offered at the time. I'm not counting the Killzone 2 demo, since you were downloading that from Europe. Bandwidth isn't always great to Europe, regardless of service.

When a service like Steam, which is arguably just as good as Xbox Live but without some of the extra, superfluous things like Netflix, is free, it's hard to justify XBL's price.

yea that were the answers i was looking for. steam is free and is an amazing service. also psn offers great content without a price tag and is constantly evolving. microsoft is making out like a bandit charging people $50 a year for gold subscriptions just to play a game online.
and in reply to the wifi comment. a lot of homes now a days run wifi just because it's easier to do and there are no wires to worry about. that's $100 for a wifi adapter, that's insane.
i like xbox but i hate the way microsoft plays like the cheap and friendlier console when in reality you are shelling out more $$ in the long run.
sony is upfront knowing they are the more exspensive package but the consumer is getting way more in the box.

Dude, you can just buy a $30 (AUD) router and modify that to work as a wifi receiver for the 360.
SURE, its not built in.
But if you leave your 360 set up, like me, its perfect.

are you poor, cheap, or just enslaved by misguided idealism?

By your opinion, which has been beaten to death, i asuume you do not currently own a 360 and/or have LIVE. Therefore in MY opinion, "yours" is moot.
Btw, all that is old news, do yourself a favor and write to MS about it, that would seem more practical Mr. logue.

Went down there this morning and the stores had dozens in the locking peg and more in the back so no need to do the flyer thing. Just ask if you do not see it on the shelf.

As someone who plays online regularly with both PS3 and 360, the $50 (or less!) per year for Xbox is more than worth it. The PlayStation Network is MUCH worse on download times and server reliability, and the PS Store is crap. All of the Live Arcade games have demos, where PS3 has nearly none. You get what you pay for with PS3 Online.
I will pay Microsoft for Live because I know the service will be worth every penny. (Although if it went cheaper, I would not complain. LOL)

Server reliablity? Do you mean the service servers? Cause Live has been down twice in the last year (3 in 14 months) and PSN hasn't been down at all in the last year (once in 14 months)
Or do you mean the game servers? Oh, cause Live, despite costing money, DOESN'T HAVE GAME SERVERS. And PSN does.
I honestly don't buy many games off PSN (or Live), but of the games I have, most have had demos (on both services), unless someone bought an exclusive or something weird.
Hey, maybe all your friends are on Live (many of mine are). Maybe you appreciate the inter-game voice chat of Live. I can understand that. But when it comes down to just playing games, Live doesn't have anything over PSN. They both work.

No, there have been plenty of times in the past 3 months since I got my PS3 that even just logging on to the PlayStation Network has been impossible. And I know it has nothing to do with my connection, since my 360 or PC have zero issues at the same time as my PS3.
The majority of PSN arcade games that I want to check out have no option other than to download the full game. So, I rarely check out any. Every game I want to check out on the Live Arcade have a demo.
Not to mention, I just downloaded the Halo Wars 1.5 GB demo in 20 minutes, while the same size file would take well over an hour at least on PSN. Keep in mind, I have the fastest cable internet available with my provider.
PSN is great for what it is. Yes, they both work. But, at least in my experience, Live has a much better track record overall. (Plus, when Live had issues, I've gotten free stuff. When my PSN has issues, I get to speak with someone at Sony named "Roy" with a killer Middle Eastern accent, who tells me nothing is wrong and it must be my router. Huh?!)

Trust me, when either service goes down, it shows up on joystiq and kotaku. So go back and search for the downtimes for both. You'll see.
And last time Live went down, you didn't get anything as compensation. Go check. And the first time it went down you got Undertow as compensation. That game is worthless.
