Microsoft kills support for the original Xbox in Japan
19
Beginning March 3 in Japan, Microsoft will no longer service original Xbox consoles, regardless of warranty status. Xbox (not Xbox 360s, now) owners who are still under warranty and require repair will have the opportunity to participate in an upgrade offer, trading broken Xbox units for a new, free, Xbox 360 (insert ironic Red Ring of Death joke here). More information regarding the service stoppage and upgrade offer is available on the Xbox Japan Support site.

No they won't... they'll take a hammer to their original XBox, and get themselves a free 360... if they haven't bought one already.

It's free. Mistakenly that was removed from an edit. But the trade up is free.

Why are they still under warranty? The 360 has been out for over three years now, I didn't know they still sold old Xboxes somewhere?

im suprised they even need to offer warranty on them at this point! orginal xboxes are pretty solid machines compared to 360s, consider this i bought an orginal xbox in 2004, i upgraded to a 360 in 2007, im now on my third 360! first one had disc drive problem the second RROD'd on me and i dont want to jynx this current one. however its sad to think the newer "better" dont last yet the original one still soldiers on! im really glad i didnt trade it in

Yeah, I'm on my 2nd 360 now. I can't believe I still have a super nintendo that runs strong still after many years, crazy.

@psychohog: It's simple really. The Super Nintendo is less complicated than the Xbox360. The more complicated something is the higher the chances of problems are. When it comes to the Xbox360 though, it's mostly poor design.

Are they really allowed to do that? Cancel all current warranties?

First I'd like to say I totally lol'd at the photo for this article, and I'm in the library right now. Also, I really like reading your articles Xav, because you do a very good job at not only writing the article so it's interesting, but you also keep up with the comments. Just the fact that you reply to comments impresses me, but you do it multiple times. So, I just want to say thanks for keeping things interesting.
