It's been 8 years since the release of the last real Wolfenstein game. After seeing Wolfenstein last week at an Activision event, we wonder if there's any reason to revisit the franchise.
There's a fine line between "classic" and "dated," and Wolfenstein finds itself on the wrong side of the fence. Fighting Nazis was a novel idea back in the series' prime, but it has since become a tired idea. At first glance, Wolfenstein can only be described as generic. A FPS that has you crawling through World War II shooting Nazis? After dozens of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games, to call the era overused would be an understatement.
Gameplay and setting aren't the only things dated about Wolfenstein. The visuals are lackluster, undoubtedly hindered by the aging idTech 4 engine (Doom 3 engine). We couldn't help but notice how poor the texture work was and how uninspired the levels looked through the entirety of the hands-off demonstration. Although the visuals were rather bland, we were taken aback by the shoddy framerate. Yes, the game still has quite a bit of development left ahead of it, but this early look certainly didn't give us much confidence.
The core shooting mechanics don't look fun either. Where's the visceral combat? Where's cover? Where's the intelligent enemy AI that tracks you down? Enemies were standing targets, never moving close for the kill, or running away from dangerous explosives. This is unacceptable in an era where games like Killzone and Halo have raised the bar so high.
Wolfenstein games have always injected a bit of sci-fi into the mix, and this iteration follows suit. Players have the ability to enter the "Veil"-- an alternate spirit world that sits atop our own -- at any time. With a press of a button, players will be able to see into the Veil and find new paths, new creatures and spirits, and enemy weak points. It's a similar concept to Metroid Prime 2's Dark Aether, although there are seemingly no consequences for entering the Veil. Players will also receive other powers, depending on their spiritual energy, such as the ability to slow down time. The use of powers didn't seem very well integrated into the combat, making Wolfenstein look more like a "F.E.A.R lite" than a substantial FPS.
The Wolfenstein presentation didn't exactly demonstrate why any aspect of the game, including the Veil, should be taken with interest. However, as gimmicky as it may be, the Veil certainly has the most potential to greatly expand the depth and define the unique hook of the game. For now, Wolfenstein is simply a dated shooter with graphics and gameplay that gamers have long outgrown.

I love joystiq, they do their previews right.
TV shows, magazines, and other game websites always are like "This is game is going to be 11/10 stars. I know it, they just have to fix a few things and it will be perfect." Then a week later they give it a 3/10.

Didn't these screenshots come out months ago? Why is he commenting on them now...
Andrew Yoon seems clueless as to the impact of the Wolfenstein series. Dismissing this title as "unsubstantual" is pretty weak considering the past success of Wolfenstein games. This is especially overly critical considering the limited media currently available to judge the most recent installment. Here Andrew hasn't even seen the multiplayer yet... which more many people is the selling point for a game. Even games with great single player camapaigns (COD4) are largerly bypassed by eager gamers ready to play online. This is confirmed by the recent statistics listed for COD4 on ign.com
Lets look at a bit of history here: Wolfenstein 3d is pretty much credited for the birth of 3d FPS. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Made GOTY, and had a HUGE community following thanks to it's incredible multiplayer component. The class based and team emphasized gameplay wouldn''t even be partially replicated until next gen games such as BF2 and COD4. Then we have Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, the first substantial FPS that I can remember being given to a community for FREE. Thats quite a history for a franchise, so to look at a couple of screenshots and suggest it's unsubstantial is ridiculous.
The last Wolftenstein Multiplayer experience was so close to perfection for me, that I am cautiously optimistic about this release. This is largely due to the different studios developing the game. I'm looking for nerve and greymatter, instead we have Raven. Having said that, I still think this dismissal is blasphemous to the franchise that is largely considered the grand pappy of gaming.

PDZero wasn't too hot. I still liked it because of the classic maps that were redone. Not nearly the scale of the original perfect dark, which was really the feature and perfected Goldeneye engine. Def another good fps series, at least for consoles.

Just posting and not replying to any one.
I'm 44, I play daily online games many hours since the 96 Age of Empires game.
RTCW was my real first FPS WW2 game, and I don't want to hurt anyone playing other games today, but the fun and gameplay of RTCW was and stills uncomparable to any WW2 FPS shooter. Basically all other franchises copied RTCW WW2 idea but never got that close. Wolfenstein is a WW2 super-natural game that mixes WW2 with that fantastic "SN' idea with an incredible teamwork needed in order to play it correctly on MP games, and to tell you the truth, if the game is done right, you can't get tired of it because possibilities are endless.
The question is...are they gona make it in the right way?
Why not? Thousands like me are old gamers and we have been waiting long for it, we are old school gamers and we do know already that the game is gona be great, ID and Co knows the potential of the Wolf series and it's all about money.
If they mess it up they mess up with $, they already messed up Quake and other games and they don't have much room to still play around with it. If ID keeps loosing credentials (franchises) they better start to get ready to go, cuz the ID end is near, and ID Tech 5 Rage game is not gona save your rear end...by the way, Wolfenstein should have been made with ID Tech 5 and that's already a big failure, because announcing an RTCW (the dady of all FPS games) with a +5 years old tech engine is not a good idea a all.
Message to ID: Get that game into ID Tech 5 or be gone

You know what, I only have a couple of words to say about all of this: Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory.
A game can be AMAZING without the graphical polish and all of the bells and whistles. That said, my hopes aren't high that this new Wolfenstein will live up to Enemy Territory, but I can still hope anyway. I'm not about to write it off just because the graphics suck.

As long as the framerate isn't too shoddy when it's released, and it's actually a solid game, I might pick it up. Although it's surprising they'd use an older game engine, I'm still looking forward to fighting alternative-style Nazis

Such a shame. I have always had a thing for the Wolfenstein licence. I still think there is a place for Wolf now but they have to stick to the quasi-realistic, arcadey gameplay that made RTCW so fun as I'm also not at all sold on this alternate reality thing they've got going on here. Bring back the hidden treasures, secret areas, huge bosses, awesome level design and beefy sound effects - then we may have a deal :)

Nothing about those shots look bad to me. Were they demoing it on a console? The PC version will likely be the best looking version, and although you didn't bother to include it in your platform tags, it will be on PC.
Why does every FPS need to play like Gears, Halo, or Killzone now? There's room for classic gameplay and there are plenty of people who appreciate it.

It was demoed on the consoles. It's likely these screens are from a PC version, as they are better than what I saw on the TV. Old-school isn't necessarily bad, but I think most modern gamers expect enemies to ... y'know, react to things. Like bullets.
I don't think the game was particularly bad, but it was very uninspired. I'm hoping that next time I see the game, they give me a hands-on and they show me a bit more on why the Vale changes things up.

Since those screenshots are 16:9 (1024x576) they are probably captured from the console version. Screenshots from the PC version would be a 16:10 resolution.

I've been playing Call of Duty: World at War on Veteran difficulty for the past two weeks and the enemy AI in that game is incredibly stupid. A lot of times, enemies will just stand still while a shoot them. The same goes for COD4. So, for you to make a comment like that is a bit imprudent.
And I'm purely basing this off of the WWII genre FPS that are currently out there. I wouldn't compare Wolfenstein to Halo 3 by any means. The AI in that game is still better then most FPS games to date.

Who put this guy on duty to do this article? WWII games are no more common than modern shooters or alien vs humans games. The graphics look fine, and we all know that Multiplayer is what makes this game great. Funny how he can slate the game when the game is no where near complete, and uses his own false views of the FPS genre to put a negative spin on the game.

It's because Wolfenstein can't be ANYTHING but a Nazi shooter. It doesn't matter how good it looks, it'll just be another iteration of the exact same game.
On a side note, the Veil is a spirit world you can enter at any time? Prey, anyone?

It's true the preview is a bit negative, but this is a thoroughly generic shooter -- at least from what they previewed. I do note that this is still early in development, and there's no way I can comment on MP cuz it simply wasn't available at the preview.

As far as I can see it, Id stopped making great games. Doom 3, Quake 4, were both generic and just not as fun as other games out at the time. They've become completely generic. Beyond that, the doom 3 engine has defined how everything looks in Id games, and that look is generic, unrealistic, rubbery, and not even stylized. John Caramack is a genius, but his company hasn't seen past REALLY BIG TEXTURES, and ignores all other forms of graphical progress. The last good game that came out of id was Return to Castle Wolfenstein, in 2001, and that wasn't even developed in house. The last game they developed themselves that was really fun was Quake 3 Team Arena. That was ten years ago. A decade. I really hope that they can make something worth paying attention to, but even if they started out making really amazing games, I have no high expectations after a decade of bland games from id software.

I thought the Wolfenstein series set itself apart from increasingly generic "kill-the-nazis" shooters by fictionalizing the war and giving the nazis elements of super-science and the occult (for example, the hitler-mech boss from Wolfenstein 3D).
I'd think if that's done well enough it should be enough to make a Wolfenstein game stand out from every other WW2 shooter. It's the same war - just taken a couple steps away from reality.
Sure, CoD: World at War has nazi zombies - but how many WW2 games have cybernetically-enhanced nazi super-soldiers and undead Saxon warior-princes?

If this comes out at a budget price, like $29.99, I would buy it.
Also, keep in mind, this is not a world war II game per se, it is more of a supernatural, alternate history world war II game.
The last one was not that good, kind of fun, but it didn't have legs. The multi-player was fun for a little while before it got old and full of cheaters (xbox live anyway).

Dated? Oh man, serenity now... I've been looking forward to this game for 8 years. I grew up playing Wolf3D at the age of 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein at 13, and still today they are two of my favorite games of all time. Sure the gameplay is a little classic just running and gunning, but isn't that what Wolfenstein is about? Isn't that what id is about? Wake up and smell the coffee, not everything has to be innovative this day and age. And shame on you for bringing up the WWII issue. Sure there have been a lot of games out there, but at least they are always interesting and I haven't seen a great WWII shooter since Call of Duty [1]. Yes, I am a fanboy, yes I am a classic gamer, but just know there are many people like me.
Oh and PS: It's based on id Tech 4, but heavily modified. It will look significantly better than Doom 3 / Quake 4. Compare RTCW to Quake 3 and tell me which one looks better.
PPS: Not trying to start a flame war, just voicing my opinion :]

Well Halo for some reason is the standard, what is acceptable in a shooter or the least you can expect in any decent FPS and Kz2 um I think its with Crysis and Gears of war not exactly standards more like the refined form of the modern FPS basically the pinnacle if you want.
Doom 3 Engine wow that’s quite old, why not the Rage/Doom 4 engine? Then again if its cheap why not,Doom 3 engine is still solid and appeals the "My computer is too crappy to run games except fro World of Warcraft" demographic.

The thing about Return to Castle Wolfenstein is that it was a great return to a classic franchise, whereas this is not. This would just be a reiteration of the last Wolfenstein game. 8 years may be a decent amount of time between games, but this doesn't look that much different than RtCW... .RtCW looked a million times different than its predecessor.
RtCW also looked and played just as good, if not better, than pretty much every other shooter out there. I remember seeing the flame thrower for the first time, holy crap that thing was like hot sex pouring out of the corner of the screen. The multiplayer was crazy fun, too. It was impressive. This game doesn't look impressive to me like that one did.
I won't dismiss it until I play it, though.
