News first, then a question: Microsoft just announced that when Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned arrives next week, it will bring with it a free week of GTA IV multiplayer from Feb. 17 to 22. The week will be marked by a "Game With Rockstar" event and more, which you can read about right here.
So, now the question: Does this news apply to any of you? Are there still people kicking around who are downloading DLC but aren't subscribed to Gold? If so, make yourselves heard in the comments so we know if we should keep bringing you tidbits like the one above.

No that's only for free content. Paid Content is available at the same time for Gold and Silver alike.

or do you mean "LOL, paying for games."
my flawed theory is this: if the game is free to play online i will buy it (like playstation 3 games)
if i have to pay to play the game online, like xbox360, i'm not going to pay for the game twice.
sorry if everyone disagrees.

It is well documented that during the worst period of the Great Depression, there were actually zero paid annual subscribers to XBox Live.
So, if the economy keeps tanking, I expect us to get very close to zero again. We will only play online during designated "Game With Developer" weekends, after we have finished eating squirrel-in-a-can for dinner.

I look at it as paying $5 a month to avoid playing on PSN.

See what happens? Simply mention that there are alternatives to paying $5 a month and the XBrats will downvote you.

There are still people like me who are too busy to have a permanent gold account. Every now and then I will buy a 1 month subscription (or get one of those free ones) so it still is great to have news like this posted. Thanks

Don't kid yourself, spanky. You assuredly aren't "too busy" to have a permanent Live Gold account. You may be too discretionary with your spending, too cheap or even too lazy to have one, but being too busy has nothing to do with it.
Oh, the irony in an internet poster claiming to be "too busy"...

well i feel like im too busy to pay for one (along with some personal network issues). i go to college and work and both take just about all my time. i typically cruise this blog when im at school between classes or on break at work on my phone. the idea of paying for something i may not get a chance to use is always frightening for me. dont get me wrong, i think Live is a great service but the PSN service is top notch as well and is perfect for those occasions when i do get to sit down and play a game online. it's true that $3.85 a month is not alot of money, but it's still money that could be spent elsewhere if i subscribe and then dont use it (like my last gym membership).

If you are one to work and take your eduction seriously, then video games take the furthest spot in the backseat. My cousin off at college who has the sold(actually given away) Ps3 doesn't use it much at all. Not because he dislikes it or prefers another console. He doesn't have time. He could make time, yes, but rather spend it womanizing, or hanging with friends when not studying. For defense forces, if it were the Wii/ Xbox the scenario would stay same.

Until we had the Bonanza of $30 for a year of Gold I was a Silver only. I still barely play online, just some Co-op action with friends.
as a Silver I bought lots of DLC... obviously not Map packs but lots of single player game expanding content (Oblivion stuff, Bring down the Sky and the Like)
The Demo's a week late thing is about the only downside of being a Silver if you don't want to play online. Because of that there were many a Demo I never checked out because by the time I could D/L them I'd forgotten and there's a game I'll then never buy.

Whoa...why all the negatives. I don't own an xbox, and I thought that Gold accounts were like those of us on the PS3 who have Qore subscritiptions and got premium content. Sorry for making so many people angry.

I'm not angry--just posting a site with all the answers for XBL--didn't have alot of time to write a response.
Silver membership (free for everyone) allows you access to content although it tends to be offered a week or 2 later than Gold members, unless it's premium content. no multiplayer games can be played online for Silver. Gold allows you to play multiplayer online and extra free content available earlier.
Sony makes Qore optional but I dl'd the one free episode they offered in dec/jan and didn't care for it--so I don't pay for Qore although I wouldn't've minded the Beta for that one popular game that escapes my mind from Nov/Dec. besides, I can read all that info they offer faster than they can talk on Qore. ; )

Had a Gold, it ran out, I hardly used it so now on Silver, bought Knot Island the other week (first piece of paid DLC I've ever got), so I kinda fit the bill for this deal, but probably won't bother getting The Lost & Damned straight off as I'm busy playing other stuff.

Lost and Damned will have a retail release as well. Even if silver members can't download it for some reason, they can still get ahold of it in some way. I imagine this content will be an exception to that rule anyway.

Wow a whole week for those that bought the game can play multiplayer. So generous to allow people to access parts of the game that they paid for. A whole week wow. Thanks Microsoft

If you subscribe to HBO, and never watch it, do you continue to pay for it? That's where I got with the Gold account. I appreciate the value that it provides, but I get more enjoyment out of the single player aspects of a game...why pay $50, $30, or $2 for something that you will not use?

If you think GTAIV is a bad game you need to play Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Or any other post-2001 Sonic game. That's just the tip of the iceberg, mind you, there's also Superman 64, Pac-Man for the Atari 2600, Elf Bowling 1&2, Bomberman: Act Zero... you get my point.

Sonic 2006 did indeed suck due to trashy level design, bugs (anecdotal doesn't help ya), pretty meh visuals at times, and the worst story to have ever hit a video game in history
And while the first ammendment does protect your ability to post your opinoin
it also protects our ability to tell you you're wrong and/or downvote you

I dont get it, do you have to actually pay to play online on the xbox, what a rip off,
50 dollors a year, yea its 5 a month but its like the price of a game, would you pay 100.00 for a game if they promised you that it would last you 2 years to beat, thats only 5 dollors a month
silly x bots

Jeff who are you and why did you wake up today? (dont, worry, i have more pointless questions coming your way)
What year is it?
Why do we pay for XBL?
Is this pay for Xbox system new?
What system can i get that will provide me with free service, with the same "exact content & features"?
Finally, when are cars going to be able to fly? They can in movies, why not now!?

Hell yes I would pay $100 for a game guaranteed to last 2 years.
It sure as hell beats paying $60 for a game that lasts less than 10 hours, like most PS3 games.

That format already exists in theory, its called an M M O.
Ah, Jeff i am not going to try keep ribbing you, actually i have to respect you and many others perspectives on, paying for online gaming. It should be free which would be nice. I enjoy it, and when gaming online, i have never heard any issues in regards to pricing. 1. That would be out of place and open the flood gates for slurs of all kind during a casual (Uno) or competitive match (FPS of choice). While staying away from the "its better than the Wii or Ps3 zone". I must say there is a reason as to why they charge. There are many, i repeat, many, acute details that incorporated into the navigation, interface, of XBL.
Not to assume you are a Ps3 only user, i have not been on PSN in quite some time. So my question is trivial. Can you preview a video/game via "streaming" without having t DL it a demo/trailer?
Browsing my friends list, i notice one was playing Street Fighter 2HD, clicking easy to navigate links there was one for "preview game". That led to a quickly streamed video of the game in play to the Karate Kid theme song, "Your the Best". Crazy.
(Doesn't work for most games in which you have to DL the demo, to "see" it.)

Is that the best you can do? Must still be a high schooler, most adults are much better at it.
But then again, you've already proven you aren't that smart by asking a stupid question like "would you spend $100 on a game that lasts 2 years". Considering I haven't found a $60 game on any system that lasts 1/8th of that time, that would be a great bargin and you would have to be a moron to pass it up.

Two things:
1) XBox live can be purchased for $40 regularly, sometimes even $30, for a 13 month subscription. We're talking about $2-$3 a month to play ANY game online, not just GTA IV. If you can't part with $2-$3 a month for a decent online gaming service, I question how you even pay for the electricity to power your console.
2) A free week of online multiplayer is such a lame incentive. What's the actual value of it, 75 cents? ($3 per month/ 4 weeks in a month, not to mention this is for the 1 game only, not all games) I'm surprised they do this more often to get people to enjoy it and buy more live subscriptions.

well sir welcome to the REAL world. A Wolrd where my Light bill is $120/month, Cable/Internet/Phone is $150/month, Car Insurance is $200/month, Mortgage is $1,200/month, gas fluctuates between $200-$400/month, and I spend over $1,000/month of Food for a house of 4.

The cost of Xbox Live Gold really inst that much, especially recently with all of these $30 offers these last few weeks. I actually prefer paying a small fee like this to access the service. First, It gives Microsoft an incentive to make a quality online system and keep it operating efficiently. Sure there have been one or two problems here and there and there was that Christmas 2007 incident which we were well compensated for. We would have never gotten that free game if xbox live was a free service to start with. Also xbox live is hands down the best online system. PS3 and Wii online games are garbage. I believe that it’s the money from these fees that allows Microsoft to take the online gaming above and beyond anything else out there. Second, I don’t think I’m interested in playing with someone who is too cheap to pay $5 a month to do so. Gaming is expensive you pay $300 for a console, $60 for a game (times however many games you own), maybe $50 for a second controller. What is an additional $50 for a year of access to the best online gaming going to matter at this point? If you are too cheep to pay for online gaming then you are not the kind of people we want on Xbox live multiplayer.
