Have you Horde? 'Survival' mode to make waves in Left 4 Dead
Looks like Left 4 Dead's Survival mode will pit players against waves of raging zombies as part of new DLC, first announced last week. The upcoming add-on will also allow gamers to play Death Toll and Dead Air Versus campaigns along with the new Survival mode.
According to GameTrailers, Survival mode is akin to Call of Duty: World at War's Nazi Zombie mode, sending wave after wave of brain-eating monsters toward our favorite foursome. The mode will track how long players can survive the onslaught; however, it is unclear if players are competing as a team or for individual times. Survival will be playable on 12 maps -- since Valve has yet to announce new maps, Survival is likely to be played on 12 of the existing 20 maps in the game.
Left 4 Dead DLC will be made available online and, according to the video, in a special edition of the game coming this Spring.

simblor @ Feb 10th 2009 2:59PM
Say it with me everyone, 12 new maps!
(Also whats with the outdated screenshot.. L4D sure dont look like that anymore!)
Mike @ Feb 10th 2009 3:48PM
It hasn't been confirmed if any of the 12 Survival mode maps are new. Most likely they are sections of the existing campaign maps. Here's hoping otherwise though!
OMGOMG @ Feb 10th 2009 2:58PM
This DLC is sounding more and more like a no-brainer.

Cardbored @ Feb 10th 2009 3:05PM
this might finally make me buy this game :3 especially if I can get a copy with the DLC
moletonttu @ Feb 10th 2009 3:08PM
Seriously, if this is going to cost something on pc, Valve is in for a shitstorm. The campaigns should have been versus-enabled on release and I have a feeling Survivor is just a shove-in to justify the cost on xbox 360.
Alex @ Feb 10th 2009 3:18PM
Would you like a little cheese with that wine?
Seriously, when you go out and run a company on the size and scope of valve and are capable of producing similar quality products, then start whining and moaning about should have's and should nots, until then....
STFU
Lee @ Feb 10th 2009 3:40PM
I wholeheartedly agree. First off the game alone is £26. Orange Box was the same price yet they released the TF2 updates for free.
One can assume the L4D updates will be free too. If not then it'll be the first bad thing Valve ever did (/will do).
I'm never going to pay for something that should have been in the original game, with the "finished" versus maps.
Mikeawesome @ Feb 10th 2009 3:59PM
Valve makes PLENTY off the residuals from sales in their store, they really don't need to have people pay for DLC, which is why they usually don't.
Remember kids, DLC on PC is just content, really. It's been the standard for ages to update via downloads, the DLC (which to me means "purchased content") is something that really only happens on consoles, and dammit, that's where it should stay.
Alex @ Feb 10th 2009 4:55PM
Yeah, I know, heaven forbid a company makes money off a product that THEY sell and THEY make. (SARCASM IMPLIED)
Good grief.
It's their stuff, and they can choose to do with it, however they want, if people are going to pay for it, good, becuase that means more money for them, to invest in their company and stay afloat in these turbulent times.
Just becase pc gamers have expected things for a time, doesn't mean it's their right to enjoy free content on the PC. If a company devotes the time and energy to update or add to their existing product, it's their choice. I love how you all are trying to justify that Valve already makes enough money.
Good grief, I didn't know PC gaming was full of a bunch of welfare sucking commies.
Poisoned Al @ Feb 10th 2009 6:00PM
Well we can't afford anything else after we've pain for the gaming PC am-i-rite-lol?
dicknjane @ Feb 10th 2009 3:12PM
Ok, now i'm defenitly buying this day one.
Mike @ Feb 10th 2009 3:51PM
I hate to have to inform you, but you just barely missed day one by about 90 days. Take your time though, get hyped up.
dicknjane @ Feb 10th 2009 4:05PM
The DLC moron.
Maurice M @ Feb 10th 2009 3:13PM
If we're going to make recent comparisons, doesn't this mode sound more like Horde mode than the WAW Nazi-Zombie mode?
Maurice M @ Feb 10th 2009 3:16PM
Oh hey you kind of did make that comparison in the title. Cleva >
Blazur @ Feb 10th 2009 3:15PM
Great, so I can look forward to seeing how long I can survive backed up into a corner and spamming melee.
Adriaan @ Feb 10th 2009 4:38PM
This might be fixed in the patch that (hopefully) comes with the DLC.
ChewyDogg @ Feb 10th 2009 3:16PM
No new campaigns?!! It doesn't come out until Spring and they won't have at least one stinking new campaign ready? Major disappointment.
chase @ Feb 10th 2009 3:31PM
spring starts next month, just saying.
Mike @ Feb 10th 2009 3:54PM
Agreed. This DLC seems like really weak sauce if it pans out the way it seems most likely to. If a handful of the Survival maps are brand new it will save the day. If not, *yawn* what's taking so long?
ChewyDogg @ Feb 10th 2009 4:25PM
@ Chase
Right, spring starts next month. This game came out in November. By the time the DLC is released, 5 months will have passed. All they have to show for that is Versus on two existing maps and a new game mode? I'll say again, major disappointment.
And where the Hell is our Versus balance/exploit patch?
chase @ Feb 10th 2009 6:09PM
@ ChewyDogg
I see what you mean.
Einhanderkiller @ Feb 10th 2009 6:38PM
"And where the Hell is our Versus balance/exploit patch?"
?
It released last month. Buffed the Smoker, modified the Hunter a bit, buffed the Tank a bit against auto-shotguns, fixed a bunch of exploits, etc.
ChewyDogg @ Feb 11th 2009 8:47AM
@ Einhanderkiller
I posted this from xbox360fanboy.com. The PC patch does me no good.
umm....hello??? @ Feb 10th 2009 3:16PM
"Left 4 Dead DLC will be made available online and, according to the video, in a special edition of the game, coming this Spring."
really? so should I just wait for the GOTY edition like CoD4 which was 30% less and had more content than when it first came out? yet another reason not to buy multiplayer-enabled games day one....
Neuromancer @ Feb 10th 2009 3:56PM
I bet if you wait 5 years it'll be even cheaper!
Dillon @ Feb 10th 2009 4:56PM
Omg, I can buy Fallout 2 on Amazon.com for $7.67!
Why did I ever spend all that money back in the day?
splinteredvision @ Feb 10th 2009 3:17PM
So we really are paying for those two campaigns? That's just ridiculous. They are in the game already, just not in multiplayer. Those should be added via an update, not paid DLC.
Blazur @ Feb 10th 2009 3:22PM
Yeah, I'll be pissed if they charge for those multiplayer maps. L4D is cool and all but not worth the price of retail for how little content we received. I got bored of the game really quickly and it felt incomplete.
Plus this survival mode just doesn't sound all too entertaining.
AwesomeTown @ Feb 10th 2009 3:47PM
If they had been new maps, I could see charging $10 for this DLC. But considering it's only one new mode and same maps, anything over $5 is asking a bit much.
chase @ Feb 10th 2009 3:24PM
(my post from the announcement of the DLC.)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think the DLC will be like the COD 5 Zombie mode (but better).
4 survivors, 100,000 Zombies, No escape.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was right on the money.
Burritoclock @ Feb 10th 2009 5:56PM
Anyone that actually thinks there will be 12 new maps please smack yourself in the face. It will be 12 sections of the 4 maps.
If I am wrong, SWEET! but it ain't gonna happen.
Sir Buzz Killington( The Artist formerly known as Jakka) @ Feb 10th 2009 3:32PM
Zombies better be tweaked to become more resistant but slower and fewer. Me, I don't see the appeal of constant shooting at the waves of papermache hordes we have now for anything longer than the first week.
WEGGLES @ Feb 10th 2009 3:57PM
This DLC better be cheap,
The 2 OLD campaigns for VS mode (which should've been there in the first place)
Plus a new mode on 12 OLD maps? If it's 800 points, I may hold off. :\
Neuromancer @ Feb 10th 2009 3:58PM
It's hard to get excited about this, what this game really needs is another 2 chapters or so. Great game, content definately lacking.
MLS @ Feb 10th 2009 3:59PM
What about that Dawn of The Dead mall they teased months ago?
