Hideo Kojima will sneak into the 2009 Game Developers Conference this year and get his keynote on, according to Gamasutra. It'll be the designer's first presentation at the event, with his debut titled "Solid Game Design: Making the 'Impossible' Possible."
GDC Event Director Meggan Scavio notes that the group has asked Kojima to keynote almost every year "for as long as [she] can remember." She's curious to see how the "revered and elusive" creator will inspire attendees. The presentation is scheduled for an hour, but given the designer's inability to edit, don't be surprised if it lasts 8 hours, with two 90-minute cutscenes and a couple of codec conversations included.

Why is this news listed under "PlayStation"? Last I heard, Kojima is a developer who is not tied down to any one system - I mean, don't they have a game in the works for iPhone?

Marty,
The author is probably assuming that the keynote will focus on Metal Gear Solid 4 which is a Playstation exclusive. That seems to make the most sense. There is nothing to exclude an iPhone tag but there is nothing to support a Nintendo or Microsoft tag.

I didn't suggest that they add a Nintendo or Microsoft tag - I just said that specifically labeling Kojima as PlayStation seems wrong.

METAL GEAR spin-off or MGS5 or maybe a new franchise all together?

People need to understand this is the keynote speech at the Game Developers Conference not a press conference to announce anything. He will probably talk about some of his feelings about the current state of the industry in terms of East vs West development, his inspirations and thoughts on MGS 4 and whatever other hot button issues he sees as being relevant for discussion. I doubt he will use this keynote to announce a new game. That's just me speculating here.

He could also talk about the challenges he faced in making a seperate online component for the Metal Gear Franchise, why it wasn't successful and what he learned from that process of adapting a single player forumla into a multiplayer experience while trying to keep it identifiable as Metal gear.

Konami screwed the pooch by not usinf the standardized PSN ID tags and PSN storefront for content. I tried to purchases gene expansions from the MGO shop and couldn't figure out how to do it! To that extent I agree with you.
However, there are some technical problems with MGO as well. The attribute system doesn't really reward the player for ranking up. There was never a speed difference at level 1 or level 4. The FPS view should be allowed to stay in a fixed position if the player desires without having to hold an extra button. Finally, the balacing system for matches doesn't work. It's also silly that no in game firearms, octocamo or other features can be used in MGO. Why is it I have to start off with the same selection og gund every match and can only upgrade when I am winning. It punishes less experienced players which seems backwards to me. Finally, the design choice to force players to salute each time after dying to be able to chat completely ruined the tactical team based elements Kojima was going for because no one ever uses it. The only way the game works is if you play with a clan. The CQC is also broken and unbalanced. Why is it 12 gun shots won't kill you but one shank from a knife will?
This is from a guy that loves MGS4 and likes MGO.

I suppose I should have mentioned that I ONLY ever played with a clan. I guess that kind of disqualifies my opinion on many fronts. I still maintain that while I was playing, it was a very good game.

What if it ends up being an hour long lecture on how to properly cook eggs?

It could be.
But given the title of the presentation and 1 hour length I rather expect it will be little more than a rant on how games need better storytelling.

If I could change my avatar without getting banned I would change my avatar into a Kid Muscle one or most likely a new Chris Hansen avatar. Is surprising the amount of times a Chris Hansen avatar comes in handy.

They already remade Metal Gear Solid it's called Twin Snakes and it's for the Gamecube.

Twin Snakes I thought was pretty good but did have some flaws compared to the original, for instance putting in the 1st person view mode from 2 without changing the mechanics, they just shoved it in there without realizing the havok that would ensue. The Ocelot boss fight is a cakewalk in Twin Snakes because of that, it breaks the game.
Some of the cutscenes were also a bit over the top. I think I'm nitpicking too much though, it was still quite good, too bad it wasn't made for the PS2. : )

I must be misunderstanding because Twin Snakes did redo the gameplay. It pretty much remade the entire game with the MGS 2/3 engine. Same updated gameplay instead of the dated over the top viewpoint that doesn't work that well. Do you want the same exact game in every way as MGS 1 with an HD upgrade? That could be cool as a downloadable title like Bionic Commando rearmed or Street Fighter II HDR.
I'm good with twin Snakes as my MGS remake but it would be cool to replay the original with MGS 4's graphics.

Twin Snakes remade all of the scenes in a very appropriate way, I especially love the scene where Snake dodges a rocket, that is 10x faster than him, by doing a backflip.

There was a new director for the cutscenes in Twin Snakes which accounts for how more stylish they are compared to the original. Its just strange considering Snake does none of those acrobatic moves in the sequels.
How about remaking the 8-bit Metal Gear games instead? To play as Snake and fight Big Boss with full voice acting, dramatic cutscenes and everything we know from the Solid games, that would be amazing!
