Well this doesn't help at all It seems to be based on the assumption that a particular game's achievements are equally difficult for all players.

There's only one time when a gamerscore/achievements tell me anything... and that's in someone with nothing but a few Halo 3 achievements :)

Right. Also, what if it's not a popular game? Then some easy achievement could fetch a high TrueAchievement value when it could be something as easy as "turned the game on".

Laaaame. Does anyone actually look at someone's gamerscore to determine their skill anyway? To me it just says how much time you spend gaming.

Exactly. I wonder how many arguments erupt over who decides what achievement is worth more than another?

Same here. Time spent and games enjoyed it's what it is good for. With boosting even looking at online/MP achievements tells you jack.

Maybe you should actually go to the website. The TA achievement value is determined by a calculated formula not some random individuals opinion. That would be stupid.

Wait... so there's a formula that ascertains something subjective like difficulty of an achievement?

Site's dead for me. In any event I don't see anyway to properly assign a difficulty rating, be it opinion or forumla. So the more people have it the easier it is? Well that's fantastic except you're going to have skewed numbers from a game like Halo 3 where people have 2, 3 accounts with the MP & VidMaster achivements.

And popular games are undoubtedly going to have more of their achievements unlocked versus a crap game with easy achievements.

No, it's not based on how many people have the achievement, it's based on how many people have it compared to the amount of people that have played the game. So like in Guitar Hero 3: something like 780,000 people in the US (according to MyGamercard.net) have played it. So if out of those 780,000, only 100,000 have the "5 star all songs on expert" achievement, and 600,000 people have the "complete easy career" achievement, the expert one will have a higher percentage added to the actual gamerscore than the complete easy achievement. So even though they're only 15 gamerscore points apart, they're something like 300 "TrueAchievement" points apart.

But to hit your point a little more direct, those scores have nothing to do with anything outside of that game. So an easy game with easy achievements has no bearing on any other game. It only matters what percent of people who have played that game have that achievement. So with Halo 3 and the vidmaster achievement, if people have 2 or 3 accounts with that achievement, that counts 2 or 3 accounts. It doesn't skew the numbers because that takes into account all of the Live accounts individually.

Crap games with easy achievements still have consistent TrueAchievement scores on the site because it ranks them out of how many people have played the game. If only 12 people have played the game, the percentage that it multiplies the scores by is far lower than a game that has 500,000 players. It is very consistent. I think you should check the site out (once it comes back from the throttling Joystiq has given it) to understand it a bit better.

Bah, I'm giving up on their site. Besides, you gave a pretty good description Mo. Thanks for that.

Going by this formula my GH3 achievements show that Easy Career & Expert Career are equally as difficult to finish :)

I'll never be convinced as to how accurate or true their interpretation of gamerscore and achievements are, but if others are good with it, let them have fun.

@P7

How can you say that "Going by this formula my GH3 achievements show that Easy Career & Expert Career are equally as difficult to finish :)"????

You eithere did not do it right or talking from your butt....

The True Achievement score for Easy Career is a little over 1 meaning its worth 6 TA points while it's real value is 5. For Expert Career the true TA is almost 2 (almost double was easy is) and has a TA value of 34 with a true value of 15. So you must not understand the whole thing. I find the site very helpful. I wish people would LEARN something about the thing they are trying to bash instead of just assuming...

Fafhrdd, read my quote... I said *my* achievements. Meaning if you applied the formula to my gamerscore alone. That is to say there are and will be achievements that some people aren't going to bother getting, and as far as my own personal gamerscore (stress on the MY) there is no difference between an achievement I can't be bothered with (Easy Career) and one I've yet to get (Expert Career).

I'm not trying to bash it, just stating my opinion that I don't believe it's entirely accurate. Am I wrong? Sure, I could be.

So it weighs achievements?

Like the Simpsons game "press start" vs any mega man 9 achievement?

on a side note:

Its definitely a fun website, but their system isn't perfect either. Mostly because, as SugarDaddy notes, less popular games get their score boosted, simply because of the rarity. Still interesting to look at.

The server is fine and has always worked VERY fast...

With this posting you guys are overloading the servers, check out the post entitled "Post on joystiq puts strain on scanners"

Found here: http://www.trueachievements.com/newsitem.aspx?newsitemid=90

It says the post over here has led to over 1000 sign-ups in under one hour!!! What happens is when a new user gets on the site one of the scanners will scan your achievements.... but we never had over 1000 in a hour before!!

It will be back up and running when the scans are done.

You don't have to give your xbox live password. You have to set up a password for the site when you register with it, that's what the password field is for.

I'm Level 6 (3%) with two Platinum Trophies, twelve Gold Trophies, and an odd assortment of Silver and Bronze that I don't care to count.

@mattclarkie - I am sure the folks at TA wanted to keep their site a secret just for you. It wouldn't be much fun if you were the only one there would it?

Agreed that the formula isn't perfect, but nothing could be. It uses rarity as a proxy for difficulty (the only data available really so no problem here) but is still based on a transformation of gamerscore. For example an easy 200GS achievement may have 205TA, whereas an extremely difficult achievement with 5 GS may be worth 50TA. The reasons for this are given in the site FAQ though (which soon will be massively extended). However the ratio (multiplier) is a good indication of an individual achievement's difficulty. For example master Ninja in NGII is 9.0 whereas something like Avatar achievements are down at near 1.0. Overall the system is rather intuitive and a reasonable transformation of Gamerscore.

There is a stats page coming which will have a wealth of information (though the site is already loaded with a lot) where this and a few other issues/options may be addressed. The creator works tirelessly adding new features and is heavily involved with the community there.

For those interested the equation is:

TA = [Root (Total Gamers with the Game/Total with the Achievement)] * Gamerscore of Achievement

Brilliant site that I've enjoyed since finding it back in August and glad in the past few weeks it has been coming to a lot more peoples' attention.

too bad Microsoft THE PEOPLE WHO CAME UP WITH ACHIEVEMENTS are wrong and these guys are right. Achievements are lame anyway. Most of the hard ones are not really up to the player. A lot of times a player has to wait for a seemingly once in a lifetime occurrence or obsessively replay a game to get some body count achievement (ahem GOW2). The idea that gamer score or even "true gamer score" actually measures how good a player is seems illusory considering that people can buy it by renting certain games or play a small number of games like a retarded monkey with OCD. Gamer Score is just a marketing tool to encourage gamers to buy games. Using it to compare players takes all of the fun out of it.

This site, like gamerscore in general, is not a good measure of a player's skill. The only way it would be is if the calculated score was the average of the achievement scores from each individual game. Without doing that, the only thing gamerscore tells you is who plays the most games.
