God of War 3 Game Informer cover story leaked
Game Informer's March 2009 effort is quite an issue: Resident Evil 5, GTA IV: The Lost and Damned, Brütal Legend, and, of course, God of War 3. Did you hear? (Spoiler alert!) It's kinda like the first two, only bigger, badder and more badass -- er, wait, maybe that's the description for the other G-to-the-W sequel ...
But we digress, as is fated any juicy magazine preview, Game Informer's God of War 3 cover story has been scanned and posted in its digitized entirety; this time, on the PS3Chat.com forums (and elsewhere, we assume). If you want to dig through such compelling reveals as game director Stig Asmussen's progress report on God of War 3's obligatory sex minigame, then you're just a few clicks away. (Side note: has anyone else noticed that the designers' names get more ridiculous as this series progresses?) But, a word of advice, if we may: These are dire times for print, and, if you appreciate the work that Game Informer has put in for the new issue, then don't forget to show your support (read: buy the crinkly thing).
<shameless plug> Besides, Joystiq will publish our "online-only" God of War 3 preview in just two days! (That's, uh, this Friday, by the way.) </shameless plug>
[Thanks, Chris]

It's great that "PS3 Fanboy" became "Joystiq-Playstation" or whatever since instead of the core staff from PS3 Fanboy, we've now got 360 fans from the other branches writing up articles here. Same thing with that Killzone 2 "review", if you could call it that, which we saw not too long ago. Where are you Andrew Yoon et al?
Dirty @ Feb 11th 2009 10:41AM
Im pretty sure that all the guys are fanboys of gaming in general, not that they dont have bias and preference.
Andrew Yoon @ Feb 11th 2009 10:43AM
Yeah, I don't see why you'd be offended by this joke. "Bigger, better and more badass" is one of the funnier (and overused) PR lines from a studio in recent memory.
ADPolicenaut @ Feb 11th 2009 10:46AM
The man himself responds! Anyway, I probably am just overreacting to be honest. I'm just not a huge fan of this reshuffling of the different blogs.
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Feb 11th 2009 11:07AM
i'm kind of with ADPolicenaut on this one (not the offense to the other GoW reference reference though). i'm having a hard time adjusting to this Fanboy site shuffle as it's often confusing what site i'm actually reading. i like the way the new site looks but i think they should have taken an "ain't broke, don't fix it" approach to the fanboy sites. i guess i'm just afraid that it's going to change the tone of the site and insert bias into it with everything being so unified now. on the old site, i could normally get two views of the same topic on two different sites, now it's just the same article on both sites. it's not bad, just different. i guess i'll get used to it.
Maverick Saturn @ Feb 11th 2009 12:12PM
IMO, I like the merge, each article comes with the positive and negative aspect, I actually think before was annoying, the same article posted twice, one on Joystiq and another on the fanboy sites.
The Joystiq ones always sparked my interest more then the fanboy sites because while its nice to share the same opinions on things, its also nice to see the opposing reasonings for things, rather then just a positive outlook on everything.
Without the fanboy wars and annoying individuals of which I can even name because they start the fanboy wars in the first place, but won't name because its irrelevant, the merge has made it easier to access news, for more specific news I go to the seperate sites, no point all the fanboy sites posting the same general articles several times over.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 11th 2009 1:00PM
" "Bigger, better and more badass" is one of the funnier (and overused) PR lines from a studio in recent memory".
But not as amusing as "[Name/Thing] is gonna make you [its/his/her] b*tch" back in the day.
I guess "Shove it up your ass" never caught on.
BananaBoat @ Feb 11th 2009 11:31PM
Adam from X-play said it best in that rant: Some fanboys won't even accept your lack of bias when you give an exclusive a 5/5 perfect score.
Case in point, they gave Killzone 2 a 5/5 on X-Play, and Sony fanboys still complained that their 5/5 score was biased, and that they didn't really love the game, but rather that they gave it a 5/5 begrudgingly despite their overwhelming desire to see Sony fail.
Fanboyism is the problem, and I'm pretty glad that Joystiq completely dropped that partisan language. If you need to be among fellow fanboys (in the....insane person that would rather die than play an opponents console sense) then feel free to run on over to GAF.
And no, I'm not singling out Sony fanboys. There are just as many crazy Xbox and Nintendo fanboys.
koehler83 @ Feb 12th 2009 4:00AM
OP missed the mark, but I agree with the sentiment. The fanboy sites are dead in their place; little more than tagged content.
Basically there is only Joystiq now with the ability to sort according to console relevance.. which Joystiq already had. So yeah...
RIP PS3Fanboy.
On the bright side, PSP fanboy gained a little relevance.

It's hard for me to take this article, or Game Informer, seriously, since GI is essentially little more than a shill for Gamestop now. Gee, I wonder what incentive Game Informer could have to give a game a good review? Oh, right, there's a giant corner display for it in every GS. As I'm doing everything I can to boycott Gamestop's business practices (read: Zero Originality), I'm certainly not about to support their magazine just because it's now 'the only game in town'.
aj @ Feb 11th 2009 10:57AM
And Joystiq is owned by AOL, which is owned by Time Warner, which owns Traveller's Tales and also has a 20% stake in Eidos, so of COURSE Joystiq is going to give those Lego games and Eidos games really good reviews.
It's a conspiracy. Boycott everything.
Mower @ Feb 11th 2009 11:09AM
No, there's a difference between advertising for a product, and advertising for a product through a publication that makes little-to-no mention of your affiliation with it, purchasing games for 10-20% of what you're going to sell them for, selling people scratched, unusable disks because you don't feel like testing them yourselves, and constantly harassing salespeople to harass customers, etc.
If you're trying to argue that Gamestop works like any other company, it's a losing battle. Only the oil companies are getting away with this much, and I need my car to get to work.
Monty Airline @ Feb 11th 2009 11:15AM
GI being the only game in town is a good reason NOT to support it. Besides, buying a GI for the story you already read online is not going to save niche/specialized print from going under. It's a copyright violation to post it (the whole scanned story, not a link to it) and that's how GI should pursue it if they wish. The 'stiq doesn't make clear, too, that a few bucks for the cover price, or a subscription, this is not how print makes its money. Print makes its money on selling ads, and ads are sold based on circulation and advertisers' perception of the marketing value of that circulation. Really, just like how Joystiq stays afloat -- except they don't need single or subscription prices to defray the cost of printing and mailing Joystiq.
But I expect GI will be sustained by GS far longer than their advertising revenue dictates. They serve a different purpose. It's wholly unacceptable that GI is so far in bed with GS, but it's only an ethical stick with which you can smack them. From a business perspective, their "business practices" are going great guns: They're making a lot of money right now. Indeed Gamefly has bought Shacknews, apparently following in the footsteps of GS.
I know it hurts that GS will buy your used game for $10 and sell it for $40. Everyone hates that around here. Around here, for some reason, everyone LOVES Half-Price Books. They will buy your used novel for $1 and sell it for $8. Why is this somehow better than GS's practices? But I used to hate that so much, the inequity. But I never sell books there, only buy them, and nowhere else can I get these books for 8 bucks. Nowhere else can I buy for our kids new children's books from overstock lots, books selling retail at $19 or at warehouse discounters for $14, for only $5.
I do trade games at GS. The store does not give me "what they're worth", whatever that means. What I could get on eBay? What I could get selling them off the sidewalk in the city? Anyway, I still take a stack of mediocre games of no present or future value to this family, and I get $200 credit to spend on new games. Would I prefer $400? Sure. But if the relative pittance GS pays me keeps them in business, with a store a block from my house -- the ONLY media retailer who has bothered to stay open in a large area, due to the brick/mortar cuts caused by online sales -- so be it.
GS managers are often required to work all day w/o off-premises breaks. Most GS managers I know bring a sack lunch, work by themselves, it's quiet until school lets out and their part-time staff comes in to help, and they like the peace because they get a lot done -- and they knew getting into it what would be required. Still I think GS could clean up their labor practices. But then they'd be a WHOLE LOT more pro labor than the state here in which they operate. However, their price structure I can live with.
So, yeah, I'm coming out in DEFENSE of Gamestop. Do I like their labor practices? No, but plenty of places we all patronize are A LOT worse. Do I think the GI/GS relationship is ethical? No. You can't trust GI even if they are trustworthy because of the unseemly relationship with GS. But since when are any games media outlets held to traditional standards of journalism? Joystiq certainly isn't. It's a far better source for games news than GI for several reasons, but do they take pains to maintain journalistic integrity? No. Is there really any reason for them to do so? No, not in the current games journalism environment.
I understand why people don't shop at GS, and that's their right. But they are a successful business, clearly selling in a manner the public likes. You can't knock them for success w/ no more evasion of retailing ethics than any other retailer.
Lord Negatron @ Feb 11th 2009 1:09PM
Shame on GameStop for having a service to make money...
Did it occur to you, that you do not HAVE to buy any used game for an unreasonably high price? Also from your ranting it seems you are talking out of your rear. "What are your games worth, hmmm"?
Your GameInformer - GameStop conspiracy is of your own. I like G.I. as i do many other magazines, and GameStop can have an issue like any other store. The one in your location sounds like a "poor management" issue (scratched goods etc.)
Mr Khan @ Feb 11th 2009 2:22PM
You'd be surprised at how crooked "Games Journalism" actually is. Joystiq's integrity comes from the fact that it is a blog, not a media outlet, so its far more transparent, honest, and consumer-oriented.
You and i, we aren't the customers for game magazines and the big websites anymore. We are the product, the big publishers are the customers.

Oh, that Onion article! So good. Reminds me of me screaming when my SONY TV when the HDMI mysteriously stopped handshaking with my PS3 and I could not solve the problem.
JizzyB @ Feb 11th 2009 11:19AM
There is no doubt that it is getting harder and harder to not own a PS3. For me the biggest hurdle is that there is still a lot of great gaming to be had on the 360 and honestly, the PS3 is still far too expensive. A summer price drop could make me a PS3 owner though.
Troy Powers @ Feb 11th 2009 11:20AM
@SoulBlade
I guess. For me, personally, those are terrible reasons to miss out on video gaming greatness. But, I wish much luck, success and enjoyment to whoever does have those reasons.
Keep on gamin'!
SoulBlade @ Feb 11th 2009 11:27AM
haha yea I know those are crap reasons... except maybe the price thing. Not everyone can afford all the luxuries others can.
The onion video is still something everyone needs to see. It's hilarious.
Troy Powers @ Feb 11th 2009 11:32AM
No, I could definitely see the price being restrictive, especially with the current economic situation. I know how that goes, for sure. Even so, an argument could be made that you're getting more bang for your buck.
And, yeah, the Sony vid is hilarious. Pretty much describes every tech gadget to come out in the last 3 years. :D
Maverick Saturn @ Feb 11th 2009 12:00PM
Pricing is the biggest issue with the PS3, beyond that there is minor annoyances like all the software and information being seperate rather then all together PSLIFE over here, Browser over there, Home over on the other side.
Apart from that, PSN is improving a great deal, once known as 'Free because theres nothing on it', that argument now fails, 'Lack of any good exclusive titles', that argument now fails, 'Multiplats are better on 360', rarely can the difference be made with newer titles so that argument now fails, 'Only a Blu-ray player', well its 'also' a blu-ray player, and with HD-DVD out the way, theres no competition, that arguement now fails, 'XBL destroys PSN', with trophies out now, friendslists improving etc, the only issue I see is that it doesn't come with headsets.
Theres only petty reasons now like controller issues, Sony PR arrogance and other minor things with Price from the day it was announced (I remember clearly) still being the biggest issue. Apart from the price, my PS3 is very much getting the same love and attention as my 360. I agree, a few years back it was rather embarrasing having an overpriced system with little or nothing to it, but now it is more then making up for what I paid for it.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 11th 2009 11:03AM
How can anyone even read that damn article? How about a transcription? Or at least some high res scans.

Dirty @ Feb 11th 2009 11:16AM
Hack, Slash, poke out eyeball or rip off wing/arm, be bald and angry, rinse, repeat.
Its mostly just the most satisfying action game last generation, also the graphics were amazing for the ps2, animations were great. The story, while good, wont be the center point.
SoulBlade @ Feb 11th 2009 11:19AM
You may want to read a brief synopsis of the first two (and possibly the PSP one). It's not necessary as they usually recap stuff, but it doesn't hurt to know the story a bit.
Nineteen88 @ Feb 11th 2009 11:34AM
Is it an open world game? like POP08 for example?
Maverick Saturn @ Feb 11th 2009 11:52AM
No, not really, you follow a path like most action games, but its the path you follow and the way they do it that makes it all the more interesting to play, each boss battle is like a LOTR movie, each horde fight is just hectic none stop action.
Its a game with action from start to finish, unless you hate hack slash, there is never a dull moment....unless you are playing on the hardest setting and you can't get past a particular wave of enemies, that can be quite irritating.
SoulBlade @ Feb 11th 2009 11:53AM
It's not that open worldish. I find it rather linear, but the level design is phenomenal.
Maverick Saturn @ Feb 11th 2009 12:02PM
Yeah, if open world consists of a rather wide space of which to fight a wave of enemies, stopping you from going outside of that space until they are all dead. Lol
I'm guessing GOW with be a bit like Heavenly Sword but with more Brute force.
J @ Feb 11th 2009 12:04PM
just wait for gametrailers' inevitable retrospective videos. That's wat lazy slow readers like me rely on.
Nick @ Feb 11th 2009 12:31PM
Heavenly Sword was GoW with a really, really, REALLY hot chick and broken gameplay mechanics, the worst QTE events and inconsistent storyline progression.
HS, however, had top freakin notch voice acting, and the best, BEST, facial expressions I've ever seen in a video game.
But the awesomeness of God of War, there's no words. The first 2 were the most satisfying experiences I've ever had. The second one was a little less consistent in its awesomness, but I had no serious complaints.
The only issue I have is that in order for me to play the first 2, I need to buy another PS2. That makes me angry. Stupid non-bc for the PS2 on new PS3s
>.
RebornJeremiah @ Feb 11th 2009 1:05PM
I don't think people ever care about GoW storyline. It is all about Kratos ripping off the head of the monsters. Heck, that's why I play it.
