I did some thinking, and I figured out exactly why I hate what Activision's doing. It's less to do with the sheer number, and everything to do with the timing of it.

There was no time to get interested in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith because they announced Guitar Hero World Tour before it came out.

There was no time to enjoy Guitar Hero World Tour because Guitar Hero: Metallica was announced.

There's been no time to get interested in Gutiar Hero: Metallica, because now they've announced Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits.

The same for the DS series. Guitar Hero On Tour comes out...and is quickly followed by Decades...which is quickly followed by Modern Hits.

As a consumer, I have been completely unable to get interested in a product before Activision drops another one in my lap. The DLC for World Tour was starting to get interesting, and now I've got no reason to bother...because give me a few months and I'll buy Greatest Hits which won't support it.

Guitar Hero Metallica supports WT's DLC. Well, the Metalllica songs are the only ones confirmed as of now, but if it has the software to read the Metallica songs, then it has the software to read the other ones too. Just cross out the Expert Pluss on the non-metallica DLC, and bam, compatability.

Milking? I could hardly say they are milking the franchise.

Works Tour had Ozzy, I can't wait to see who they include in their next big game. I just hope they have a new peripheral planned for the DSi.

So how will the DS version work, considering the DSi scraps the GBA input used for the little fretboard thingo. Or will Activision just f*ck consumers over without a thought?

Yeah thats true I guess.
Possibly why they lament the fact that DSi isn't the successor to the DS; simply another option.

Come guys think about it you get songs from GH 1-3 on a disc In Full Band format if anything they are letting people play songs like Jordan on drums and songs like Killer Queen on vocals. So why are we getting mad. I know you guys are mad they are making money.

I know! What about a full band version of I Wanna Be Sedated, Symphony of Destruction, Take Me Out, Turning Japanese, Rock This Town, You Really Got Me, Trogdor, Godzilla, Cowboys From Hell, Bark at the Moon, Madhouse, Beast and the Harlot, Thunderhorse, Holy Diver, Play With Me, Seventeen, No One Like You, Rock You Like a Hurricane, F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X., Dream On, Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O' Mine, Misirlou, Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart, Lonely is the night, Jordan, Crossroads, Fat Lip, Frankenstein, Sharp Dressed Man, Smoke on the Water, Hold On Loosely, ZIGGY FREAKING STARDUST, All Of This, Cavemen Rejoice, Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo, Killing in the Name, The Metal, My Name is Jonas, Slow Ride, Cult of Personality, Helicopter, Walk This Way, Livin' on the Edge... It just goes on and on. So many great songs that need the full band treatment.

And last but not least, FREEBIRD.

If it has Freebird, it is an automatic purchase from me.

No. No it's not. No Rock Band 3 this year. I think EA knows not to milk the franchise.

The very fact that there are new Guitar Hero games is the definition of milking. The series was only started because of Harmonix and Activision helped them release it. After the acquisition by MTV Games, Harmonix went with EA to continue their work.

Neversoft had NOTHING to do with the series. The ONLY reason they picked up the series is because Activision knew that Guitar Hero had MAD name recognition, so really, they could release crap in a box and as long as it says Guitar Hero on it, people will buy it. Since Activision owns the property, they were able to get away with this shit.

Then they had to ripoff the band formula that Rock Band made. I have lost ALL respect for anything that Activision has ever done. (Do they do anything other than vomit new Call of Dutys, Guitar Heros, and World of Warcrafts?) and am much happier with EA.

What a bunch of whiny little bitches! This is GREAT news for any REAL Guitar Hero fan. I have a Wii so my first chance to get into it was GH3. I have sorely missed some of the great early songs (Freebird, Carry on my Wayward Son, Sweet Child o' Mine, etc.) The chance to play them now with FULL BAND is sweet and definitely caught my attention.

Let's hope they include RAINING BLOOD!!!! And more importantly, some songs with Lead + Rhythm guitars!

"Great news for any REAL Guitar Hero fan"

Yep, I have to agree. Only the REAL Guitar Hero fans are the ones gullible enough to buy this. Everyone else will continue buying DLC for Rock Band.

That said, I hope Guitar Hero sticks around. As long as they sell well, Rock Band and HMX have more incentive to release killer DLC. Competition is good for everyone.

How dare they release new content.

I was happy with what I already had, and now the release more. What a disgrace.

I can't believe how many Rock Band fanboys there are here.

Activision are merely doing the same as Harmonix, releasing new songs to play. Instead of being able to download them you will have to purchase a physical copy. Sure it will cost slightly more then downloading them, but it should be a better game with bugs removed.

If you don't like it then don't buy it.

I will be buying it, I have rock band 1 and 2, and all the guitarheros (except aerosmith) so just enjoy the music.

Actually, as long as the songs to price ration is greater than 1 song for every 2 dollars, this will actually be cheaper than DLC.

Like for example, 84 songs on a $60 disk. Less than $1 a song.

You lose selection for price. For a guy like me, I don't mind it. I learn of bands I have never heard of before, and it gives me new music to check out.

THANK YOU and Hafk for infusing some logic here.

Pick your poison, people. Get 50 songs from a company offering it through DLC or 50 songs from a company offering it on disc. Or better yet, get them both! It really is ok to enjoy both GH and RB.

I personally like this idea, but I'm going to wait for the setlist before I get excited for anything. But if I get to drum to "Free Bird" and "Welcome to the Jungle", I am SO there!

Thing is, there's one big BIG question that needs to be answered here - will this greatest hits package let you copy the songs off the disc and onto the hard drive or will you have to swap discs over? This is what Harmonix have done so well with Rock Band, regardless of which game you pick up and what DLC you buy it shifts over to use the latest engine while retaining your purchases.

If Activision let you copy the tracks over to GH:WT then fair enough. If not then it becomes pretty much pointless as a party game which, let's face it, is where these games work best.

Honestly, they need to fix the song selection screen before they offer a feature like that.

Imagine Rock Band 2 with Rock Band 1's setlist management. Then add RB1's songs, and add DLC. Then you just have a giant clusterfuck of songs.

Except, for GH:WT, it's even worse, because DLC is can not be mixed into the in-game tracks.

I don't see what the problem is. We get GH1/2 drum tracks playable, and all those songs as DLC would probably total the amount you'd spend on the disc. Definitely picking it up. Unless of course it's just GHWT with GH1/2 songs. I hate the new stylized graphics. Too... dirty for my taste.

The in-game interface is better, from what I have seen of GH: Metallica.

http://i41.tinypic.com/t6yt1i.jpg

You can now see if you are failing (Looking in that corner was a pain)
There is a black circle behind the combo number (Seeing the combo meter was a pain)
Vocalists have words to describe how well they did, rather than colors.
And finally, they combined the Streak Counter of GH3 and the Star Counter of RB. Something I wanted in RB2 and GH:WT, and never got.

I just hope the menus are cleaner this time around.

I missed Gh1 and 2 and since I can't play either of these on my PS3 (please correct me if I'm wrong), I'm actually really looking forward to the greatest hits collection as long as I don't have to buy even more peripherals!

The main thing that bothers me about GH, having 2 and 3 is that I have to switch disks and start the game again when I want to play a song from the other game.

As the engine is the same anyway why can't they make it so that you can play all the music that you bought from one game (I only do career mode to unlock every song), then I'd be interested in the newer ones.

And if Activision reads this, I'm still waiting for GH-Johnny Cash, GH-Queen and GH-Golden Earring.

This going to open a can of worms, but GHWT or Rockband 2?

i recently sold my GH Legends of Rock and need a replacement, I just want the guitar but my housemate wants to get the drums.

I'm a guitarist myself, so the whole making your own tracks thing really appeals to me and I've only ever played Legends of Rock, never touched Rock Band.

What do the good people of Joystiq reckon?

Honestly, they should both be going for a good rate right now. Get the GHWT guitar bundle and get the RB2 bundle. That way you'll have the better guitar and better drum set and they both have quality DLC, though RB's got the larger quantity.

Yeah, Rock band all the way it has the content and its already there. Although as Activision are apparently developing DJ Hero i hope they concentrate and get it right and take DLC more seriously than GH. We shall see. Check out my site http://www.freegadgetsontheweb.co.uk to get consoles to play all this one!

Activision's really banking on the existing DS base, then, since the DSi renders their product useless.

As for Greatest Hits, it might work out well enough. Is it soon enough to be nostalgic about old Guitar Hero?

Personally I am very excited for this. Ever since I upgraded to my PS3 and traded in my PS2 I have been unable to play the first 2 GH's, # 3 sucked by the way, due to no backwards compatibility on the PS3. This is a good release for those people that have PS3's and dont want to continue to own a PS2 for just 2 games.
