Valve has announced that the price of its upcoming Left 4 Dead DLC, which includes a new "Survival" mode and "Versus" mode support for two more campaigns, will be set at ... zero dollars for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions.
Wow. Our posts are really short when we can't find anything to complain about.

Thanks Valve, for breaking the mold. Was already tired of the trend of overpriced DLC with content that isn't worthwhile.

whoa lets not pat themselves too hard, this really should have been in the game from the beginning or later "patched in"
basically the levels which already exist in the game will now also be available for the other game modes.

@flanker22: "whoa lets not pat themselves too hard, this really should have been in the game from the beginning or later "patched in" "
1) Isn't this the same as "patched in later"? This is essentially a free content update. I fail to see how this is the problem.
2) The maps do have changes between standard and versus mode. For example, the room on top of the Hospital at the end of No Mercy. Valve apparently takes extra time to ensure the the maps are well balanced in Versus mode. Personally, I'm fine with the game coming out when it did and adding these polished levels now, rather than coming out with all the polished levels now.

@flanker22 (sorry Lieutenant)
Shut your god damn mouth.
I'm tired of the argument that "it should have come out with the initial release". What would you prefer? 6 maps that came out in November or 8 maps that might be out some time in March? I'd prefer to actually be playing the game instead of still waiting for it.

I think a lot of people have the misconception that Valve is just adding a new game mode and making Death Toll and Dead Air compatible with Versus mode. This is incorrect. They are adding two NEW maps, one of which is reportedly a SHOPPING MALL, both of which will be compatible with Versus mode. THIS IS NEW CONTENT. It was not "already in the game".
It is unconfirmed whether said maps will also work with campaign mode, or which maps will be compatible with Survival mode. It seems as if Death Toll and Dead Air will continue to be unusable in Versus mode.
Hope this clears things up.

Yes, maybe should have been part of the initial release... but considering that every time before this Microsoft has FORCED developers to release DLC for pay, I consider this a tremendous coup for John Q. Gamer.

xtremeholymuffin, the shopping mall, known as Dawn Before Dead, is a fan made map. It was originally for the mod No More Room in Hell, but I believe that mod died so the creator of the map is now porting it for use in Left 4 Dead.

i think either you people have never played the game or even bothered to look at the other game modes.
- basically single player has 4 campaigns, vs mode only has two available. those other two campaigns will be unlocked for vs mode.
- and a horde type mode
i still stand by my initial argument that it is more of a patch type content or in the game initially. seriously valve couldn't come up with a horde mode initially? seems like such a no brainer.
i've researched the articles on the said DLC and if im wrong i'll admit it, i'll come back here and apologize but if it turns out to be exactly how i stated you should all feel like idiots.

This is Valve.
No surprise here, although I can't tell if they're being genuinely nice or just too afraid of the resulting shitstorm from their fanbases if they were to make DLC priced for the first time.

The problem with Burnout is that it's on all 3 platforms. If Microsoft forced them to charge, Criterion could play the "Yeaah, we're not releasing it on the 360 then" card.

Actually no Microsoft under it's own policy of "same price or less than competition" (PS3) couldn't force Criterion to do anything.

Yeah, I was initially a bit shocked at the idea of this having a price tag if it's just new game modes on pre-existing maps, something modders could easily have done for free.
I'm glad they're not charging, but I am of course willing to pay for entirely new campaigns, so long as versus is supported from the get-go. And preferably if they're good value.

Microsoft doesn't force any developer to charge for DLC......Unless they are the publisher of the game as they are with Gears and Epic.
They charge a fee to host the content on their servers and it really is up to the developers or publishers to decide if they want to eat that charge or pass it along to the consumers.

Console gamers always call PC gamers elitist because of an inferiority complex that has formed since PC games started being ported to consoles.
Now, I play on all platforms, PC and console alike and yes while there are a fair share of PC gamers that are elitist pricks, there are a large number of console dickwads who act like juvinile delinquents with a KKK sticker slapped on their foreheads. I will admit though it's really nice to be able to choose the server I want and be able to easily votekick 14-year-old racial slur spewing, excessively swearing, whiny, cheating asshats from said server so I can enjoy gaming with people who are normal...for all intents and purposes anyway.
If you are going to lump PC gamers together perhaps I should do the same with console gamers? Don't hold a double standard. You guys have just as many assholes as we do.

I'd like to see PC owners who were laughing at 360 owners paying for content they would get free to apologize.
But that won't ever happen since this is the internet.

You know, I'm one of the few PC gamers who comment on this site and I think it's pretty hypocritical that I'm being collectively called arrogant and elitist. Of course, you can make that argument about Lee, but then there's trolls in every platform's camp.
Not once in months have I made a comment that mocked consoles, console gamers or insulted anyone who didn't flamebait first. Enjoy your games, not defending the platform(s) you play them on.

....And why should we apologize? We should be sorry that you don't have to pay for DLC? Am I wrong, or does that not make ANY sense?

I guess those who game primarily on PC are elitist and arrogant because we hold our games to a quality standard, and see how diluted and dumbed down games have to be to be on consoles.
Case in point, Halo would have bombed if it was a PC exclusive.
