Sega pits Aliens vs Predator on 360, PS3 in 'early 2010'
Announced at a Sega event in London today, the "all-new" Aliens vs. Predator (that's a working title, folks) will mark the return of Rebellion, developers of the 1999 game of the same name that Sega calls a "legendary title that went on to define an entire generation of multiplayer gaming." But all this excitement doesn't come cheap: "With the opportunity to publish what promises to be a landmark game, SEGA has strategically updated the release of the other upcoming Aliens titles currently in development within its portfolio." We'll translate that for you: you won't be seeing Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines FPS and Obsidian's is-that-still-in-development Aliens RPG anytime soon.
CEO of Sega West, Naoya Tsurumi, explains, "By adjusting the release of our other Aliens titles to accommodate [Aliens vs. Predator], SEGA will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans." We've asked Sega to clarify the delay (it's just a delay, right?) of both previously announced titles. Is Aliens vs. Predator "the first to launch in a series" of AvP games, or "the first to launch in a series" of Aliens games, including the previously announced two?
[Update: Sega got back to us, and said simply, "We'll have more news on the other games in the future. Today we are concentrating on the Rebellion partnership announcement." Anyone out there have any details on either game they'd be willing to share, we're all ears!]

It will be interesting to see how this game turns out

"We'll have more news on the other games in the future."
The future?! But that won't happen until after the present!
NoughtSoClever @ Apr 23rd 2009 12:26PM
Sorry. didn't mean to reply to your post with irrelevance.
Vincent @ Feb 11th 2009 11:45AM
O ya... SEGA is on a roll.
Obie @ Feb 11th 2009 11:47AM
"If it bleeds, we can kill it..."
Let's see how this one turns out.
Alex @ Feb 11th 2009 11:50AM
Man, what is going on with Colonial Marines? This game should not be taking this long, I'm starting to get nervous about this game.
I sure hope the Brothers in Arms game didn't hurt its chances of seeing the light of day.
Joystiq, will you please scan the interwebs, flush out the sources, and pay off the tipsters to find out what is going on?
Christopher Grant @ Feb 11th 2009 11:55AM
We've got a couple calls into Sega – will let you know what we hear back.
Cellien @ Feb 11th 2009 11:58AM
I'm VERY interested in knowing this too. Thx Christopher.
Dartmerc @ Feb 11th 2009 5:49PM
Hopefully it's a strategic marketing/release delay and SEGA doesn't want to blow it's Aliens wad on two average games. If Colonial Marines gets the extra time for COD4 level polish, well I'm happy to wait.
Thanatos @ Feb 11th 2009 11:56AM
Why is a game series that was designed, and quite successful on the PC going to console only >:( Better, i guess, then PC getting a half-asses consoleized piece of shit port ala F.E.A.R. 2.
Jcarpio @ Feb 11th 2009 12:00PM
Guess they believe that A) It's where the money is at and B) Less chance of it being pirated.
Avoli @ Feb 11th 2009 12:07PM
Less chance of it being pirated.....because it's on a console?
I beg to differ.
Cellien @ Feb 11th 2009 12:10PM
Not everyone's consoles are modded while everyone's PC is essentially ready to pirate out-of-box.
Thanatos @ Feb 11th 2009 12:27PM
Im so sick of this piracy argument, truth is no matter what the game is going to get pirated, same thing back in the day with AvP and AvP2. You make a good game and dont treat your players like thieves and it will sell, like Oblivion, Sins of a Solar Empire, Ect. You put in a restrictive DRM or make a half asses port thats not worth the asking price more people are going to pirate it.
McWilly @ Feb 11th 2009 12:49PM
You give pirate's too much credit. People who pirate don't have moral codes. They're not just going to stop pirating just because you take out drm or make the gamer "better". They'll just do it more. It's the way the world works.
McWilly @ Feb 11th 2009 12:50PM
*game
Thanatos @ Feb 11th 2009 1:29PM
@ McWilly
Yeah thats why i said no matter what the game is going to get pirated, but if you do things right those that are otherwise on the fence can be swayed to do the right thing and buy the game. Then you also have people that specifically pirate the game because of restrictive DRM (i know of at least a half a dozen people who did this with Spore and Bioshock).
Turkish Superman @ Feb 11th 2009 1:44PM
The original AvsP was on the Atari Jaguar. ;)
Anyhoo, Rebellion's 1999 PC AvsP was sweet. This might be the version to get if you want single-player, since Colonial Marines is shaping up as a Left 4 Dead Clone.
Cellien @ Feb 11th 2009 12:00PM
This is some bitter sweet news... My most anticipated game of 2009 is now off the 'motion scanner' (A:CM), but now I get another game based on the phenomenal franchise.
jav @ Feb 11th 2009 12:01PM
can we get make alien colonial marines right before we commit to a different program? please?
Avoli @ Feb 11th 2009 12:08PM
It better be good. Because if they're doing one console now and PS3 later, if it sucks, might as well cancel the PS3 one to save some money. I always loved this series, I'll be waiting...
Michael @ Feb 11th 2009 12:12PM
wat
Colonial Marines at least has test version screenshots, why say "wait for this one instead!" when we know theres actually written code for it (A:CM) already?
moletonttu @ Feb 11th 2009 12:24PM
Guess that kills any chance for a Monolith sequel. Damn. Avp2 is still the best game to feature any kind of alien or predator.
Thanatos @ Feb 11th 2009 12:30PM
Yeah, me and my friends still play AvP2 survivor mode at our LANs.
Dirty @ Feb 11th 2009 12:28PM
Early 2010 is shaping up to be busier than the holidays.
Alex @ Feb 11th 2009 12:35PM
Or an extreme let down of delayed games that turn into cancelled projects...
The Dark Wayne @ Feb 11th 2009 1:57PM
or games that get moved to the holidays
Markez @ Feb 11th 2009 12:34PM
What's with the timing on this game? Is there another movie coming out? The rest one was passable. WTF moment for me.
Ryan @ Feb 11th 2009 1:18PM
Yeah I'm upset.. I wanted colonial marines ... was really looking forward to that
stromm @ Feb 11th 2009 1:24PM
Frick, freaking, fraking... What about the freaking PC?!?!??!?!?!?
Jimmyjimjim @ Feb 11th 2009 1:29PM
Goddammit. I wanted to be PLAYING Aliens: Colonial Marines already. I loved Aliens vs Predator, but I'm just fine with keeping the franchises separate. I just want another Aliens game sometime within the decade.
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Feb 11th 2009 1:37PM
AvP and AvP2 were amazing FPS games. If they can remake/recreate that, I'm sold.
Magic Whiskey @ Feb 11th 2009 1:59PM
So okay. I've been wanting Aliens: Colonial Marines for a long-ass time now and hoping against hope that it's actually decent.
Now with the whole Predator mix into things, I'm super tweeked.
Here's all I'd have to say about it as a fan of both franchises:
Sure, it'd be fun to play as a Predator hunting down Aliens, but PLEASE let the Predator hunt humans too. Please.
In fact, my dream Predator game would be playing as Dutch from the first film with your squad, hunting down the lone Predator. At the end of the game, you can unlock an ability to alternately play as the Predator and hunt the team down.
Give it all to me on the COD4 engine and I won't be playing much else afterward for a LOOONG time.
Cellien @ Feb 11th 2009 3:02PM
But what do you do in the meantime while you aren't encountering the Predator? I guess you could shoot up those baddie soldiers (if you're talking about the Predator 1 setting).
xGeneral DEATHx @ Feb 11th 2009 2:00PM
Aliens: FUCK YEAH!
Predators: FUCK YEAH!
Disney World: FUCK YEAH!
Porno: FUCK YEAH...
Yuccadude @ Feb 11th 2009 2:54PM
America: FUCK YEAH!
xGeneral DEATHx @ Feb 11th 2009 3:38PM
Comin' again to save the motherfuckin' day, yeah!
Cellien @ Feb 11th 2009 3:26PM
The update sucks. They've been saying "We'll have more on A:CM in the future." for literally fucking years.
333mzh @ Feb 11th 2009 3:49PM
I really want this game, not excuses month after month year after year. Just finish A:CM already!
now it is 2010??? WTF!
Bobulous @ Feb 11th 2009 3:49PM
Please don't balls this one up, Sega.
Also, can we actually get Colonial Marines before the 30th anniversary of Aliens, please? Kthnx.
NERV @ Feb 11th 2009 3:57PM
FUKING COCK BALLS! I want ACM and the sure to n kickass preorder gift now. Just like the damn quadrilogy ok bluray, put it out and we will buy it
Nate @ Feb 11th 2009 11:33PM
Sega canceled the FPS (from gearbox) and RPG (from Obsidien), people laid off, expect something tomorrow in the news?
Bucket_of_fizz @ Feb 12th 2009 6:15AM
Great to see no PC version,
Its about time PC gaming was left to rot,
All the consoles makers and developers have to do is agree on a standard WSAD movement pad and mouse type arrangment for there games and bingo. But thats another topic
Hopefully AvsP will work out good top game from years back.
Wuckfit @ Feb 12th 2009 8:41AM
Man, can you imagine how good this game could be.
To have FPS "horde" mode where you and your team mates need to battle off the alien hive just like in "Aliens" would be amazing beyond belief. Different marine classes, so certain ones can set-up sentry guns, droids that can hack into computers to close doors to strategiclly set-up ambush points. If they could also adpot the "director" programming from "left 4 dead" so no game was the same. Man, the possibilities are endless.
Then you could have normal deathmatch options of the Marines vs Preds vs Aliens.
If SEGA and rebellion pull this off right, the could be onto the huge money maker.
johniau @ Feb 12th 2009 1:47PM
@Obie
that line is from the first Predator... it has nothing to do with Alien...
intensefire05 @ Feb 13th 2009 5:04AM
F you Sega, F you in the A...You jackasses. Aliens:CM was supposed to be out a long damn time ago!! So we finally see pics thanks to the GameInformer magazine, and we read it will be soon that we will be able to play it...and now all of a sudden because of a damn game thats not even supposed to come out till 2010 you want to push back Aliens:CM?!?! You are idiots!! How long are you going to make us wait! This is why you idiots had to give up on making video game systems, cause you suck! Instead of releasing another damn hedgehog title, how about you give us Aliens:CM...I can only freakin hope you morons know what your doing and it wil hopefully be good. What fools man, the AvP movies suck, well the 1st one wasnt as bad as the 2nd...what makes you think a game wil be better?!?!
cyberph34ramatory @ Feb 17th 2009 3:46PM
Wow. They are bringing back AvP and AvP2? It's already on the PC. You could basically run it on the regular Xbox with the graphics it has. Plus it is proven fact they have given up on AvP and AvP2 along with the 21 servers that are being shut down for the game.
Another thing. What's going to make it any better on any console system? It doesn't. It is all the same, and soon enough, Sierra will eventually see that,"It's getting old, It's time to move on" and develop no more patches for it. Everybody will be glitching, Walls will be shooting, Aliens will jump into the walls and attack from outside, Grenade hacks, 2,000 plasma shots a second, Marines jumping like the aliens, Predators walking the walls, Aliens on the Marines teams, Marines on the Aliens team, Predators on the Aliens team, Predators on the Marines team, Invincible Players, Flying, 1 Man Siege AKA "Wall Glitching In The Other Teams Spawn Area", Extreme Speed Glitches, you name it. It has happened and I do speak the truth when Joining a server that NEARLY lagged out from some moron on the predator team that fired a "Unimaginable" amount of plasma from his weapon at a "Wide" Radius, topping all that, my speakers almost busted from the combined sound of all that exploding at once. My volume at that time was up a quarter and a half and the speakers rattled like a mother f***er. So, Who do you think is going to patch that sh*t? Sure is not going to be them because they already got their moneys worth of the game. Go here to find out the sad news with AvP2 Multiplayer (http://forumplanet.gamespy.com/community/b49024/19921463/p1/)
Big George @ Mar 5th 2009 8:41PM
Yes, and it was REBELLION that coded the original 1995 Jaguar game too!
