Watchmen is regarded by many to be one of the greatest graphic novels of all time. For years, fans have been able to put Alan Moore's creation on a pedestal, and many are afraid that Zack Snyder's upcoming film adaptation can only disappoint. In conjunction with the movie's release is a video game tie-in, which should be cause for more concern, considering the poor quality of most licensed video games.
In theory, Watchmen: The End is Nigh, should be able to overcome the typical woes of movie-game development due to its distribution method. As a downloadable game, it doesn't need to offer the depth expected out of a retail box. However, it's clear that The End is Nigh simply isn't ambitious enough to do the franchise justice. Although much emphasis has been placed on the game's expansion of the franchise's canon, the core game experience simply isn't very satisfying. It can be summed up in just three words: beat-em-up.
The End is Nigh certainly does a lot of things right, and it's these dressings that make the game worthwhile for Watchmen fans. The visuals are absolutely gorgeous; the dark, rain-drenched cities of the graphic novel are accurately recreated in the game. Multiplatform digital releases very rarely, if ever, look this good. Each chapter begins with an animated introduction that fleshes out this prequel's story. While the production values don't match those of the Watchmen digital comic, these animated shorts do an admirable effort in recreating the look of the original graphic novel. Fans will certainly appreciate being able to see Rorschach and Nite Owl as crimefighters, not the condemned outcasts they become in the original story.
While it's easy to get swept away by the impressive presentation, the gameplay is thoroughly uninspired. Players can play as either Rorscach or Nite Owl, but the choice seems largely inconsequential. Ultimately, all players have access to are a generic combination of punches and kicks. Nite Owl can do electric attacks, and Rorscach can enter a "rage mode." However, these attacks are neither visceral nor cinematic.
Our preview featured only one kind of enemy: generic thugs that can also punch, kick or grab your character. Perhaps more enemy types will appear in the later areas of the game, but what we've seen so far has been disheartening.
The gameplay of The End is Nigh cannot get any more primitive. The beat-em-up genre hasn't progressed very far over the years, and it's clear that The End is Nigh makes no effort in changing the status quo. We're disappointed that some obvious features, like online cooperative play, won't be included with the game's release. Another obvious feature that's absent from the game: cooperative attacks. Although two players can play the game together offline, the lack of cooperative attacks limit the multiplayer aspect of the game. There's no way to do combos in tandem, nor is it possible to attack the same enemy with the two heroes. The multiplayer aspect is, essentially, two single player modes that happen in tandem.
Considering the entire game can be beaten in less than two hours, WBIE is going to have to price this game quite delicately. (Certainly nothing more than $10!) From what we've seen so far, Watchmen fans may want to keep their eyes on the game, not because of the gameplay, but because of the impressive production values and compelling story.

While in theory you have a solid argument, it falls a bit flat when you consider that a cosmetic resemblance to watchmen is going to be enough for a great legion of people.
This isn't just a bad Watchmen game, this is a bad game. It is a bad game and it is going to sell, not because of its merit but because it is associated with an extremely popular and well loved piece of fiction. They have put in the minimum of effort because they didn't really want to make a game, what they wanted to make was money.

Agreed. My logic is meant to criticize more the buyers of this type of processed entertainment. The companies responsible for its producing are well aware of the childlike mentality of their consumer base and therefore take advantage of it.

Or I suppose I am merely pointing out the completely disjointed nature of the quality of the source material with the quality of the end product.

Well put. It's the same thing I thought when they made a fighting game out of Fight Club. It shows such an inherent lack of comprehension of what the source material was actually about that it's almost funny. Almost. It's like watching Schindler's List and thinking, "This would make a really cool first-person-shooter!"

I have read the graphic novel a month ago and loved it. I have heard that the last issue will be altered in the film. For instance:
*spoilers*
The squid is removed and has blue lazer balls attackin the globe instead or so the the rumors said. *end spoiler*
I can understand why the scene was changed but I wonder if the change would be faithful to the original piece though I have heard rumors it isn't.
I also think I have indirectly got my friend to get the graphic novel since he is not a comicbook reader and decided to buy the novel after me tellin him how good it is.

It really needed to be a point and click adventure. Watchmen was never about action.

People need to remember that prior to the events of Watchmen, Rorschach and Nite Owl were regular crimefighters and since this game takes place before the Keene Act, it makes complete senese that these characters would spend their nights fighting crime.
If this were a game based on the events of the GN, then I agree that maybe something other than a beat-em-up would be better(like maybe an rpg or something), but since it's not, I'm okay with it as long as the game is decent.

I've never heard or read about the Watchmen until they started showing previews for the movie, but I gotta say I think it looks ridiculous. There's some glowing blue guy who looks like he's from Star Trek and some guy who looks like Batman. Me and my girlfriend thought it was a Batman parody, I was expecting the Wayans brothers to pop out. I don't know how well this movie is going to play to an audience who aren't familiar with the characters, and that the charactes look, in my opinion, rather silly.

The fanboy in me wants to beat the shit out of you for being so stupid. Do your ignorant ass a favor and go read the book.
And by now I realize you could be a troll.

Vegeta- Seriously, I'm not trying to troll. I'm just unfamiliar with the Watchmen, and judging by what I've seen in the previews, it doesn't look that interesting. That could (and probably is) because it's a movie, so there's going to be a lot left out in terms of character and story development. But for someone who doesn't read comic books I thought the preview looked silly.
If anything it makes me realize that a Halo or Gears movie probably wouldn't do too well because the masses are unfamiliar with the story and they'd be left wondering "who was that guy in the spacesuit talking to the naked hologram chick?"

1/10, got me to reply, nice trolling bro.
Presuming in the OFF CHANCE YOU'RE NOT TROLLING, there's a book called Watchmen in which said characters appear and are made plausible. But who am I kidding, you're just attention whoring.

Again, operating under the assumption that you're not trolling, I direct you to the wikipedia article on Watchmen (side note: It's a common mistake to add "The" to the title, which isn't actually there), and to the book proper. If you haven't seen the trailers, the fiction operates under an alternate history, where (among other things) we won Vietnam, and in which costumed superheroes (none of which have any powers save blue guy) have existed and operated until an act outlawing them. In this alternate 1985, one former costume is murdered, which spirals outward and sets the plot in motion.

The fact is Watchmen is a deconstruction of the superhero genre, bringing the idea of superheros to a more realistic level, giving each of the main characters human flaws and the story ends in a way that is not typical of a superhero comic.
There's a reason why it's considered to be one of the greatest graphic novels of all time.

the OP has a very valid point.. the trailer is absolutely horrible, if i didn't read the GN i would have the same assumption.
i don't know how anyone could describe what watchmen is about in 30sec but they definitely don't portray the awesome story properly in that it's really a crime thriller with plot twists and who did what's etc..

If it's $10 or less then I'll definitely be buying it, if it's any more then $10, I'll pass, I mean I'm a Watchmen fan, but for $15 I can buy Watchmen action figures, which are evidently better then this game.

This game makes Alan Moore cry.
Actually, he whinges like a child whenever anybody does anything with his characters, so there's really no pleasing his cranky old ass. Bring on the Rorschach underwear!

Knowing how much this will upset Alan Moore, I only wish I could buy it twice.
As for it being a beat-em-up, doesn't bother me. Was a really big Streets of Rage fan, so I wouldn't mind some retro-gaming with modern graphics.

Why is "Watchmen is regarded by many to be one of the greatest graphic novels of all time." always the first line of every single article written about WATCHMEN? Next time start off with something like "Remember the time Dr. Manhattan created multiple forms of himself so he could nail his wife and still get some work done?"

Wait, Trebek...
The comedian shooting a pregnant woman, but Jessica Alba not being topless for 10 seconds is a huge thing?
So they changed the ending. They CHANGED the ending; what the actual "thing" is. Not what the ending is.
They also aren't putting the pirate comics in the movie, and those are extremely relevant to the movie.
*note; they are apparantly filming the pirate comics, and will release that as a stand alone DVD possibly packaged or as a bonus in the Watchmen DVD, and there will probably be an "Ultimate Edition" that's about 5 hours long released at some point, with those scenes intact*
The exclusion of that stuff is why they can't have the ending the same way.
Most Watchmen fans (not fanboys, who are rabid and would freak out if one of Rorschachs inkblots didn't look exactly like in the comic), FANS, are extremely excited about the movie.
