At some point during the short life of Twitter's @cliffy_b, a mockumentary version of Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski, the joke became a little too real for some people and it had to be shut down. Matthew Downham, who we've actually featured before in spoofs where he fails hard at games, along with his friend, Austin Brown, were the men behind the false Bleszinski. Today he posted the full explanation of the birth and death of @cliffy_b.
Downham explains the duo never intended any malice with @cliffy_b, that the character, a clear goof on the extroverted designer, was meant to be an over-the-top version of a gaming personality they admired. The joke was going along fine, until one particular tweet was taken a bit too seriously. Although Downham avoids what the post was, it was probably the tweet heard round the Gears community: "After much testing, it looks like matchmaking is permanently broken ... There are new maps though, only 800 Microsoft Points!" That's when the Epic lawyers had Twitter kill the fake Mr. Bleszinski. The story stands as a good metric on how some lines -- especially involving money and multi-million dollar franchises -- are dangerous to cross.

What a damn shame. The tweet that may have killed it was by far the funniest one.

Isn't Cliff kind of over the top in the first place? Why make a fake one?

Twitter isn't allowing parody now? Uh oh, there goes most of the users. The only people left will be the guys and gals that are cyber stalking the twitterati.
Most people (myself included) stopped using twitter about the same time that the realization was made that noone in fact cares that you are currently eating a slice of pizza at Costco, or taking a dump.
Or are my friends just insensitive to my need to tweet about each and every trip to the can?

Thats what i was thinking. Epic didn't like hearing the truth, so they closed it down. But yeah i always thought it was funny they released paid dlc for a game that needed patching badly.. Good way to sell it? No...

It wouldn't be so hilarious if it wasn't true. Its scary.. Epic is running this game down to the ground because they aren't fixing simple issues in their game. They don't have a vested interest in fixing the game quickly because its already sold enough copies. But what they are doing is effecting sales for future installments in the series. I'm telling you one thing. I'm renting 3 rd one. Forget that crap.

I've heard GoW3 is coming out in a few weeks, it's just like GoW2 except the matchmaking is only 50% broken. Epic say you can upgrade for just 15bags of gold.
What's that noise?
Crap, its the Epic Hit Squad breaking my door down, and they're armed with Lancers. Oh, it's fine, they're the crappy plastic ones that don't work because the batteries don't fit properly.

Companies are dropping the PC market in droves because the games don't sell. And haven't you noticed most PC games end up being $40 2 months after release and $30 at the 6 month mark, even when they're a good game?
The PC market is hurting, blame the market, blame yourself, but don't blame the companies, if people bought the games, companies would continue to sell them.

So, you're telling me there isn't a pirating problem on the PC which costs software companies millions of dollars?
Can I have whatever it is you're smoking, cutting, and/or snorting?

Anyone know of any Game dev's or studios that Tweet?
Would be quite interesting to follow, right from the horses mouth n stuff.
I find Twitter pretty awesome, and some of the parody stuff was good, but most of it seems to have shut down.

Cheers to different senses of humor. I twittered the "fake Cliffy" out a long time ago once thinking it could possibly be "him", and that was all that was needed.
"Cliffy punch durr durr"... Is what got out of the deal and reading their GoW related drivel was forgotten as soon as i left the page.

Isn't freedom of speech a great thing? oh wait, that freedom is guilty until proven innocent. wait.... what? exactly. freedom of speech is SUPPOSED to exist online (thats why you can cuss on youtube - no kidding - ) but as you can see in this example it doesn't.
The skits SNL does at the beginning of their show nearly every week make fun of political personalities. some of them have been so upset by the skits, they have tried to get SNL to stop doing them. They can't, because of freedom of speech. But how long will it be until all of our spoken or typed words will be censored? If stuff like this gets axed, whats next? be ready

You don't have free speech when you're using OTHER PEOPLE'S methods of communications. If you went out into the street and just started soap boxing stuff, thats totally different than using Twitter's service that you do not pay for and have no explicit rights to. Epic asked Twitter to remove it, and Twitter did.

Because when we're watching SNL, we know those aren't the real people. Since the internet is anonymous for the most part, people may really think that he is the real cliffy b, and could in turn put the company in a bad position. The comments were hilarious, but knowing how many people thought that was the real cliffy_b, comments like the broken matchmaking isn't something that they're willing to take lightly. The goofy stuff seemed to be okay, but he just went a little too far.

Danger- if that's the case with SNL why have multiple lawmakers tried to get them to stop? Of course we know it's a joke - just like this comment that 'went too far' was obviously NOT something cliffy B would say (because cliffy B can't finish a sentence without saying revved up chainsaw among other things) and it was funny.
If you can't joke around and have fun online - what can you do?

It's hard to parody someone who is already a joke.
Cliffy B is the spastic chihuahua of video game design.
