First question: Would you tell us all about the story and everything else that you consider to be secret?
[Laughter.]
So, seriously now, were David Jaffe and Cory Barlog involved at all on this title?
Absolutely, in the sense that Dave started the series and he paved the road. Dave has been around a couple of times and given us a little bit of insight and feedback on it. I am sure he has seemed, like on his blog ...
... A little enthusiastic about it?
Yeah, he has said some stuff. And then Cory, absolutely. He had a lot to do with this game. He left a little over a year ago, so there was a lot of stuff that he paved. Things that we are doing right now are a direct result of his involvement.
When he was talking about his own plans for God of War III, Cory mentioned motion controls a lot. Is that still the case?
"Everything had to be essentially overhauled to get it on PS3." |
To be honest with you, we haven't really started tinkering with them beyond the stage of just talking about this stuff, but we have been busy just getting the core gameplay stuff going, because everything had to be essentially overhauled to get it on the PlayStation 3.
But we have got some really good ideas. And if you think about it, you could take it wherever you want, but there are some things that the Sixaxis ... I mean, look at a game like Folklore, which I think did a pretty good job.
There are some movements that are happening in there that I think could really translate well to God of War. The real vicious, kind of brutal combat; I can see that with ...
... Like those grapple moments where you would yank the controller towards you to pull them in?
Right, exactly. My opinion is that the Sixaxis kind of breaks down a little bit when you do more the sort of balancing stuff, like in Uncharted. But flOw just came out and they did a fantastic job with it, so it is something we are exploring.
Are you looking to incorporate with the PlayStation Network in any way, whether that be online mutliplayer or designing a Home space where people can bring their character into and go, "Oh look. We're in ancient Greece."
"There are definitely things we are looking at in terms of DLC." |
Since you guys are a Sony studio, in your regular meetings with SCEA, do they kind of prod you guys on stuff like that, or are they just wanting you guys to focus on the game?
Sony is really good at kind of leaving this team to do what we do best. We don't put on crazy dog and pony shows and things like that. We have milestones, like today was a milestone. But there is a lot of trust there.
If there is something that they think is relevant to our game and is going to help our game and help another game possibly, something like Home, then it is definitely brought to our attention. But at the end of the day, since I have been game director, they haven't ramrodded one thing.
I always have the right to say, "Hey, I don't think that is good and I don't want to do that." I haven't got in a situation where they say, "Well you have to do that." Hopefully that doesn't happen.

I'm a little worried about GoW 3. The franchise obviously right now is the standard for third person, I don't want to say "button mashing" per se, but the frantic crazy ass combo and bloody sword action genre.
However, besides motion controls (WHY ARE DEVELOPERS STILL DOING THIS?) and improved visuals, I don't know a whole lot else of what they're adding that will separate GoW3 from the previous titles. Even if it doesn't, the game will still be amazing, but I'll be a little disappointed that they were afraid to try something new.
Granted, there's still a ways before the game comes out, so I'll wait and see.
Milton @ Feb 13th 2009 2:57PM
I agree completely. Ever since I bought Flower, and seeing how garbage the controls were, I don't ever wanna play another motion controlled game again! I think it's good that they want to fully utilize the PS3's power, but please, no gimmick controls.
Or Better yet, have a feature that allows players to use motion controls(with the sixaxis) or use regular controls.
Lavat @ Feb 13th 2009 3:11PM
Motion controls add a interesting capability if you can use it right....In Killzone 2 I loved being able to control how steady my hand was with a sniper rifle. Like they said, if it is a Gimmick way that might be used...It wont be used.
Dirty @ Feb 13th 2009 3:32PM
I say if it aint broke dont fix it. Also motion controls are gimmicky by nature, and also suck.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 13th 2009 3:45PM
I think the genera can still be improved but God Of War is more about fast action and awesome visuals.
What I really like about God of War is that is a relaxing game,I normally play games that requiere certain level of attention or strategy but sometimes I just want to destroy stuff and just be plain chaotic and this when God of War kicks in killing hordes of monsters with Chains and blades like in Chains of Olympus was really fun.
In other words it stays true to being just fun.

Three God of War 3 articles on the front page right now? I don't want to see any of you idiots claiming that Joystiq is biased against Sony ever again.
Lavat @ Feb 13th 2009 2:50PM
Well...This is kind of playstation related...I do not know a playstation article about a playstation game has anything to do with people saying that Ps3 fanboy is biased against its own favorite console.
Anyway...Sex mini game...Yes.....Yes...Good...
Hyams @ Feb 13th 2009 2:53PM
Even Sprinkles is in love with God of War III.
TheUpperEastside @ Feb 13th 2009 3:32PM
Lol if there's any system Joystiq hates it's the Wii. Plain and simple.
The ps3 is their little lovefest. The problem is that for the most part there's nothing positive about the ps3 or news related to the ps3. That's what the sony fanboys can't grasp...
And as for God of War III yes I've liked what we've seen so far.
Marty @ Feb 13th 2009 3:45PM
Make that four articles now.
j.howlett @ Feb 13th 2009 3:52PM
they've had these articles ready, the embargo lifted and they want people to read their impressions instead of going elsewhere.
Insight @ Feb 13th 2009 4:00PM
"Lol if there's any system Joystiq hates it's the Wii. Plain and simple."
They don't hate the Wii. Stop trying to claim a bias. As many of us have said before, these guys are gamers too, and formulate opinions just like any other gamer. We all know that 2009 will be a great year for all three systems, Wii included, but it had a shitty showing throughout the second half of 08 and every news conference was disappointing. Therefore, Joystiq, just like us gamers, were disappointed.
"The ps3 is their little lovefest. The problem is that for the most part there's nothing positive about the ps3 or news related to the ps3. That's what the sony fanboys can't grasp..."
AHAHAHAHA
So what you're saying is that, even though the PS3 has had plenty of great news this year just like every system, 'sony fanboys' can't grasp something? Even though you're always the first one there, trolling the news, trying to spin it as hard as you can?
You're a funny guy.
Get this. The PS3 is going to have one hell of a year. So is the 360, and the Wii. Can't handle it? Then you're the one incapable of grasping the facts.
"And as for God of War III yes I've liked what we've seen so far."
At least we can agree on that.
JohnHype @ Feb 13th 2009 4:17PM
Gaming "journalists" love hyping up stuff almost as much as pointlessly tearing things down, you just need to understand that the hype comes first, then the nitpicking and snark.
Closer to release we'll get, yet another, breathless article about the game having aninstall (instead of an actual helpful article teaching people how to upgrade their PS3 hard drive).
Then the review will be all about how nothing new is in the game or how it doesn't have a "gimmick" or some other such nonsense.

Stig is the greatest name ever.
John @ Feb 15th 2009 1:32PM
I used to work with him at Babbage's while he was at the art institute.
He used to tell people it was short for Stigmund, Stigfried, and one time Stigtholowmew.
He is Cool as shit.
ds @ Feb 13th 2009 3:01PM
Some say his brain actually contains a Cell processor, and that his exercise routine is actually a series of quick-time events. All we know is he's called Stig Asmussen.
FemaleOrca @ Feb 13th 2009 3:52PM
nicely done.
Shagittarius @ Feb 13th 2009 3:02PM
"Despite shouldering an Altas-like workload, including organizing a team of more than 100 employees..."
Asmussen by proxy?
yeah, that sucked i know.
Shagittarius @ Feb 13th 2009 3:15PM
Doesn't Stig Asmussen sound like he would be the lead singer for the band that does 'Berserker'?
My love for you is like a truck. BER-SER-KER!
Rudolphe @ Feb 13th 2009 3:21PM
Finally, an exclusive that makes me want to go out and get a playstation... I hope it lives up to the hype.
aj @ Feb 13th 2009 3:27PM
If you enjoyed God of War, God of War 2, and God of War: Chains of Olympus, you'll probably love God of War 3.
Lord_von_Punx @ Feb 13th 2009 3:28PM
i hope they use the motion controls for rolling that would be sweet
i loved the motion sensor feature
Lord_von_Punx @ Feb 13th 2009 3:29PM

C'mon, it'll be perfect for this game, and you know it.
Dirty @ Feb 13th 2009 3:46PM
Wasn't it called challenge of the titans? Or arena of the fates?
Longhorn4Life @ Feb 13th 2009 3:38PM
I hate you joystiq, getting me all excited for a game that i might have to wait a year for, Killzone 2 looks like $h!t compare to this,

I know, I know, off-topic.
Kevin Kelly @ Feb 13th 2009 7:22PM
Nein, I went to a different school. Sorry man!
Tez @ Feb 13th 2009 4:38PM
Multi-page articles for the lose. And then I have to back to even see the comments? Two extra page views for Joystiq, I guess.
rruss79 @ Feb 13th 2009 7:02PM
Even thought I love the GOW series and have played every game including the PSP version, Ninja Gaiden is still tops in my book for 3rd person button masher. GOW is right there as number two but Ninja just gives me more satisfaction and visceral combat.
From this preview, it appears that GOW3 might take the visceral crown which is a huge plus in my book.
