With off-road racing suitably redefined, Pure dev Blackrock looks to be taking its show on the road. A new viral video seemingly for the studio's next project has pulled out onto the internet, teasing street racing, crashes and more than a passing resemblance to Burnout Paradise. In fact, assuming the video itself was posted by Blackrock, the fact that it is tagged with both "burnout" and "paradise" seems to indicate that the former Climax Racing studio is looking to Criterion's open-world racer as a template for its next sprint to the finish line.
Nothing else is known, though the brief glimpse concludes, "To Be Continued March 11, 2009," leaving us time to run to the concession stand for popcorn before finding out more.
Update: This is no longer a rumor, folks -- check it out.
[Thanks, Chris]

Damn. I saw that picture and thought it was the resurrection of Black Isle. Got me all giddy.

Wow, they failed pretty hard on the "this isn't really an ad" front.

PURE is awesome, so I'll be on the lookout for this one as well.

Couldn't care less about SSX, but I'd do my best to ensure that the appropriate animal sacrifices were made if someone would assure me that doing so would result in a new Amped game.
Amped 3 was doing open world full mountain snowboarding way ahead of the curve. It pains me to see people acting like open world this and open world that are new concepts. Burnout Paradise getting all this attention when at it's core it's just a prettier clone of Test Drive Unlimited. Good game? Yes. Better than TDU? Yes, they had two years to copy it and improve on the formula. Groundbreaking? Not for that reason (it is because of the radical changes to the game that they've been making via DLC through the past year, although I'm kind of annoyed that there aren't toggle options for DLC, maybe I want to actually play the game as it was originally intended and released instead of these studio cuts).
Anyway, another competitor in the racing genre is always welcome these days, particularly if they're willing to lean to the arcade side. The best franchises now are too technical.

So long as it is completely and utterly surreal, I expect that I will be solidly pleased with their product!

Looking at the videos there are some echoes of that humor in there, the chopper pilot telling you he's got other things to do etc. There's also the "own the mountain" score so that's going to be great. Really looking forward to this now.

Hey Blackrock, you really want my money? Re-release Pure with split-screen multiplayer. Seriously, I've got $60 right here.

It'd be nice if they patched Pure with trophies first.
