Rumor: Sega Vintage Collection coming to XBLA
An anonymous source apparently tipped off Dutch gaming site Segaonline.nl to some top secret images of Sega Vintage Collection, a series of retro titles making their way to Xbox Live. The games are what you'd expect; it's classic Sega fare with Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, Altered Beast, Shinobi III, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
The images and information seem sound enough to us, but you know how it is with these things. "My uncle totally works at Nintendo," and "My mom is in Bill Gates' book club" are just a few of the lies we've heard when dealing with these types of rumors in the past. So keep that tucked under your cap when you head over to check out the pictures.

This sounds like the SOnic mega collection being released next week in EU, (already out in US)
Jonman @ Feb 13th 2009 6:39PM
Exactly. This seems a little redundant in light of the Ultimate Genesis Collection.
Levi @ Feb 13th 2009 7:59PM
Dude, I got the Ultimate Collection. So many of those games have aged without grace. Trophievement hunting makes even the crappy games fun tho, and Comix Zone, Sonic & Knuckes, and Vectrman are all still awesome.
Orex @ Feb 13th 2009 9:30PM
love the Trophievement dig lol, i have to wait 6 more days for my copy of the mega collections but cant wait, esecialy cause the trophies are involed.
Levi @ Feb 14th 2009 12:01AM
I came up with Trophievements when I was making a Joystiq themed indie game that never made it past the title screen/menu system. I was going to have unlockables, but didn't want to tie it to a platform, so I combined the names into one word that worked out rather well!
Tiptup300 @ Feb 14th 2009 1:45PM
It didn't include the best sonic of all time
Sonic & Knuckles 3
What the feck was Sega thinking!?
xenocidic @ Feb 14th 2009 3:24PM
erm, seeing as how achievements came first, shouldn't it be...
Achievphy?
Orex @ Feb 15th 2009 1:13AM
@ xenocidic
Yeah but Achievphy sounds like a food so trophievment wins lol
Doesnt matter either way to me though =)
Pedro Monscooch @ Feb 13th 2009 6:40PM
Aren't they just some of the games coming to Europe on one glorious disc next week? Can't wait either way. More bang for your buck on the disc as opposed to individual games for 400 ms points
Nap @ Feb 13th 2009 6:50PM
I just bought this game 2 days ago! It's called Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Definitely was worth all $30, it was like a giant fist of nostalgia smacked me silly.
Also may I add, one of the easiest 1000 Gamerscore I've ever received
solidunit @ Feb 13th 2009 6:51PM
the ultimate genesis collection does not come with gunstar heroes though. (as far as i can tell, maybe theres a way to unlock it)
Alex Sohn @ Feb 13th 2009 6:53PM
Agreed, I would be annoyed, if they release this, I just bought the ultimate collection a few days ago.
Neuromancer @ Feb 13th 2009 6:57PM
Really, this kind of releases make me really happy. Call it "old meuk" but I think this kind of 16-bit games quite wonderful. 1) because of the nostalgia 2) achievements 3) online scoreboard.
Just again so enjoy!
Marty @ Feb 13th 2009 6:57PM
Sonic 3 needs to have Sonic & Knuckles virtually attached to it.
juju187 @ Feb 13th 2009 8:30PM
good ole days, you buy sonic and knuckles and unlock more stuff for sonic 2 and 3
Levi @ Feb 14th 2009 12:03AM
Dude we used to plug in random games and just play the 3D globe game so much. I got so good at it. What a cool idea. Too bad it's not possible with discs!
yolarrydabomb @ Feb 16th 2009 1:03AM
I say they implant something for that version.
Gears of War disc. 3D globe game
LMFAO
DangerMouse @ Feb 13th 2009 6:59PM
I'd be interested if they were only $3 or so, but if they're charging 5 for each game, forget it, i'll wait until the genesis collection drop in price (I'd bet it'll happen soon).
Halwende @ Feb 13th 2009 7:17PM
Oh please have co-op play in Gunstar Heroes, that game is BRILLIANT
Rob Accomando @ Feb 13th 2009 7:21PM
YAY! More ways to play Altered Beast!
/sarcasm
Mark @ Feb 13th 2009 7:34PM
OMG Altered Beast, it may not hold up to today, but OMG i have such great childhood memories of playing that game in my bro's pub, i cant wait to play it on LIVE.
Ryan Hamilton @ Feb 13th 2009 7:36PM

Outrun (Arcade)
After Burner (Arcade)
Virtua Fighter (Arcade)
AwesomeTown @ Feb 13th 2009 7:59PM
Awesome list, though I would add Mutant League hockey/football. And they really need a Sega CD collection.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 13th 2009 9:06PM
Sonic CD FTW I already have the titles I wanted from Sonic's Ultimate in Genesis Collection for the PSP and I still have Sonic 3 & Knuckles here somewhere for the PC.
The one that should totally be in there is Moonwalker and the Arcade Version as an Unlockable plus Sonic Triple trouble.
There should be a Dreamcast or Saturn collection,so many awesome fighting games for the Saturn.
Courtney @ Feb 14th 2009 12:02AM
That is a great list, though I think some of them aren't owned by Sega. That's the problem with the naming of the Ultimate Genesis Collection. It makes people think of all the great games they played on the Genesis, but it's made up of only titles Sega has the rights to, or at least I'm pretty sure that's the case.
Ryan Hamilton @ Feb 14th 2009 12:14AM
Yeah Courtney that's true, like I wanted to add the Desert Strike series as well, but that's EA.
jc @ Feb 13th 2009 7:37PM
ummm more retro titles? Can we have more orginal and move forward not backwards.
Nytemare @ Feb 13th 2009 7:49PM
I like having copies of my old games to play on newer consoles :(
Levi @ Feb 13th 2009 8:03PM
They do original stuff, let us have our old games too noob.
tmmoore_nc @ Feb 13th 2009 7:44PM
Just to point out, those titles were rated for PS3 as well as 360 by the ESRB.
jc @ Feb 13th 2009 7:55PM
yeah I understand theres people out there that like these retro games, but it does not force them to put out orginal games . Just keep reselling you the same old thing every year. Plus I bought my xbox to play next gen games not something from the nineties.
Spike @ Feb 15th 2009 2:13AM
then you stick to halo 3, i'll stick to vecorman
SunKing @ Feb 13th 2009 8:13PM
Vectorman is just unplayable for me. Terrible, ugly graphics and crummy gameplay. Shinobi III on the other hand is teh awesome and still stands up today as a great game.
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 13th 2009 9:08PM
In the PSP collection you can't see sh*t in Vectorman.I agree with Shinobi kicks ass and I actually liked Gaining ground.
Outside Sonic Phantasy star IV is the best title. Is that on the Ultimate collection?
Levi @ Feb 14th 2009 12:07AM
I was excited to try out the old Phantasy Stars. Fired up II, fired it right back down in 5 or so minutes. Way too dated. Hopefully III and IV are a bit better.
I half agree with the Vectorman thing. It's not as good as I remember, but it reminds me a bit of the old DOS action games that were awesome. Maybe even a hint of Commander Keen.
SunKing @ Feb 14th 2009 9:01AM
You see, I can still enjoy Commander Keen despite it being more dated than Vectorman, but then, I played Commander Keen when I was young where as I didn't with Vectorman. Maybe some rose-tinted glasses at work I think? I mean, I actually LIKE Bonanzo Bros. of all things :P
jc @ Feb 13th 2009 8:22PM
NOOB?!?! I have had my 360 since apr 06. I remeber that XBLA games started out at 400 pts for "retro" games cause thats all there was on XBLA. Now the "normal" price is 800 pts while thats starting to go away and 1200 points becoming the norm because you idiots keep buying this crap. They have figured out the can reselling you guys the same crap over and over and no matter how much the price is you keep paying.
Strategy_Panda (Pot & Spoon 4 Life) @ Feb 13th 2009 8:37PM
did you start playing video games in the 3D era? if so, your probably a noob
KingTorres @ Feb 13th 2009 9:00PM
"NOOB?!?! I have had my 360 since apr 06."
HAHAHAHAHA
(the first console i had was a ps1 and my first game was soviet strike, but even then id consider myself a noob.April 06...hahahaha you're killing me)
Dr Jeckyl and Mr ESC. @ Feb 13th 2009 9:17PM
KingTorres Wins.
Also I don't remember any Sega game being on 800p they are on 400p or at least the ones I bought.800p for all the games would be sweet but again Sonic's Ultimate collection was already released so kind of pointless.
Not to mention that so far none of them are crap and you would know that if it wasn't because you are N00b and one with a crappy attitude.
(My first game was D&D advanced for the Intellivision)
Squirrel3D @ Feb 14th 2009 5:18PM
My first videogame...in all seroiusness....was Ms. Pac-Man way back on the Atari 2600.
Look JC, stop it now because you just embaressed yourself. Better yet, just drop the X360 controller and get back to us after you've played games on the NES, SNES, Genesis, and Atari 2600. Then we'll take you more seroiusly as a real videogamer.
PS36Wii Fanboy @ Feb 13th 2009 10:36PM
Heh heh, losers, I was perfectly content with my ET for the Atari 2600 XD
Levi @ Feb 14th 2009 12:11AM
I started gaming on the NES as early as I remember life... I was born in 85... And sometimes I feel like a noob for not growing up on Atari or Colecovision!
Yeah I'm calling you a noob, because there is plenty of great new stuff coming out of this generation, and there's no reason to put down rereleases of old classics. There's plenty of people like me who eat this stuff up. So back off dude!!!
Halo's still gonna be there!!
:)
Strategy_Panda (Pot & Spoon 4 Life) @ Feb 13th 2009 8:36PM
does one of the tips include spamming gaming blogs?
Snowblind @ Feb 14th 2009 5:05AM
The fact they left games like Sonic & Knuckles and Gunstar Heroes off the Mega Drive Collection/Sonic Genesis Collection pretty much points to this rumour being true.
It's a low blow by Sega.
Beagles @ Feb 14th 2009 2:12PM
They didnt leave out Sonic and Knuckles, they left out Sonic 3 and Knuckles. The two separate games are in, but you cant combine them for the bonuses.
luckycreature @ Feb 14th 2009 11:03AM
Dude. I just added up the games that I got on the genesis collection for $30. If i were to buy them as marketplace games or worse virtual console,, they would have set me back 320 dollars. Yikes. I love disc based collections. It's pretty much all I own for the psp.
Spike @ Feb 15th 2009 2:15AM
you mean there are games worth playing on it?
Sylvanus @ Feb 14th 2009 10:50AM
What will it take for us to get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. If they gave that some HD graphics I would buy that in a heartbeat.
Haohmaru @ Feb 14th 2009 2:54PM
Well, if you look at the current retro Sega games on XBLA, all of them have that blue screen with the "Vintage Collection" logo. Golden Axe, Sonic 1 & 2, and Streets of Rage 2 all have it. I'd pick up Gunstar Heroes for $5 if it included online multiplayer. "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection" is a better deal for the rest of these games, except none of the games on that compilation have an online component, which sucks.
