We're fairly certain even the Pach-Attack himself couldn't have seen this coming. Microsoft CEO Steve "Developers" Ballmer recently told Reuters that the current economic conditions (hint: they're bad) will affect his company's revenues. "Revenues in our industry, and in our company, will be affected by the economic conditions," said Ballmer. Exactly how much of an effect economic problems will have on the Xbox division remains unknown.
Luckily, Microsoft saw this coming and decided to cut the economy off at the pass by dropping a few positions -- about 5,000 or so.

5000 people, wow. Man, best of luck to anyone unemployed and looking for work right now. Continues to be appalling how really, truly bad things are...

The whole 5,000 layoffs deal is WAY overblown.
The vast majority of those 5,000 "layoffs" are among their nearly 30,000 temp employees who will simply not have their contracts renewed. Most are in redundant postitions, and the majority of the permanent positions being cut are from their PC game developement houses that are being shut down as MS withdraws from the money losing PC gaming business.
Too bad for those out of a job, but when you're a MS temp anyways, you've got to expect to be out of a job sooner or later. Fewer than 10% went permanent even in the best of times.

To counter this, all the lesser employers won't get any pay raises, and the really lesser ones will go nowhere or get fired.
