ESA exec: E3 2009 to bring back 'glamour' and 'sizzle'
We've turned such phrases as "rich with spectacle," "booth babier" and "circus sideshow" when describing the extravagant elements of E3, which will be making a reemergence in E3 2009, but we feel that ESA senior director of communications Dan Hewitt aptly summed up the spirit of this year's illustrious trade show with a conciseness we've yet to muster: E3 2009 will welcome back the decidedly absent "glamour, sizzle and excitement" of Expos preceding the professionalization of the annual event in 2007.
That's not to say we'll see a return of the "over-the-top excess" that personified E3 2006, resulting in a gargantuan price tag for the event -- Hewitt says we can expect to see elements from the gaudy earlier years combined with the no-nonsensical attitude which characterized the event in '07 and '08. In other words, there will be copious amounts of booth babes, but they'll be adhering to a strict dress code of conservatively tailored three-piece suits.

It's about time.
Peter Moore @ Feb 17th 2009 11:35AM
Woo?
Peter Moore @ Feb 17th 2009 11:35AM
I'm not sure if that is the proper response...
DangerMouse @ Feb 17th 2009 11:56AM
Better response would be WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Obie @ Feb 17th 2009 11:37AM
I wonder how they will invest in a big extravagant show in the middle of a recession.
I rather they save their money and spend it on game development.
Peter Moore @ Feb 17th 2009 11:41AM
The ESA doesn't make games.
Peter Moore @ Feb 17th 2009 11:42AM
Unless you were talking about the individual companies setting up shop there, which, admittedly, makes more sense, then; Yes, I agree.
Also, I'm stupid.
Obie @ Feb 17th 2009 11:48AM
lol it's ok Petey. :p
And yes, it would be messed up if a company fires a bunch of employees and then goes: "That's that, now lets blow a mil on lighting, and booth babes at the new E3!
nutman @ Feb 17th 2009 11:37AM
This sucks for small sites and podcasters. Being able to get any sort of coverage with 60,000 people swarming the place is...difficult, to say the least.
Jettic @ Feb 17th 2009 3:38PM
That's the thing nutman, judging by the attendance last year, not many people will be showing up, so for a blogger, in theory, it would actually be easier to get in, though there wont be nearly as much glamor this year, if the recession is any indication.
Dirty @ Feb 17th 2009 11:45AM
maybe Nintendo wont embarrass themselves this year..... but I kinda hope they do. Talk about sizzle.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Feb 17th 2009 11:49AM
doubtful. unless they announce the Wii in various colors and some BIG games
acefondu @ Feb 17th 2009 11:51AM
Ugh, I can't imagine they'll out-poo themselves this year. I mean it would be damn near impossible to do worse than they did last year.
Mr Khan @ Feb 17th 2009 12:13PM
The thing that has to be foremost in consideration is the fact that Nintendo acknowledged that they screwed up. Nintendo never does that, especially over something as relatively pointless as the Gamer Media and their bitching. The fact that they acknowledged their screw up means that they will probably rectify it
We can only wait and see though
OMGOMG @ Feb 17th 2009 11:47AM
Peter Moore EA Sports tattoo. If there is a God, this will happen.
Lord Malvern @ Feb 17th 2009 1:10PM
Where will he put it, I wonder? He's running out of family-friendly body parts.
OMGOMG @ Feb 17th 2009 10:31PM
Small of his back.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Feb 17th 2009 11:48AM
Would be nice if I could go.
Dirty @ Feb 17th 2009 11:59AM
Go put in an app at a gamestop, get hired, drive down there, then act all high and mighty (part of the training anyway) at the entrance. Should work
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Feb 17th 2009 1:34PM
lol.
samfish @ Feb 17th 2009 2:08PM
Nah, it's easier than that. Just start a shitty gaming webcomic, write a few obligatory reviews then go there and say you're part of the press corps.
MarkHawk @ Feb 17th 2009 11:49AM
I would like to see more focus on some of the Art work side of things as well. Segments devoted on game development, the tech behind older or recent games, developers releasing concept art to sites around this time. Focus on the designers themselves. Bungie does a good job of showcasing their talent. I'd like to see the faces of the Infidinty Ward. I just don't want all advertising focus. Im excited to see the new stuff but by days 3-5 I grow bored with it all.
Dirty @ Feb 17th 2009 12:01PM
There is this thing called GDC, thats what your looking for.
MarkHawk @ Feb 17th 2009 12:06PM
I know about GDC, been to it once. I guess your right but I guess I am just hoping to see something come along side the announcement of a new game or following a last years holiday release. I just don't see a company like EA or Activision going back to showcase older titles or recent ones anywhere but E3.
nutman @ Feb 17th 2009 11:51AM
Personally I'm looking forward to Microsoft's announcements. They said they have a lot of unannounced exclusives planned for 2009 and I bet we'll see them there.
darthjayson @ Feb 17th 2009 11:57AM
I hear Scarlett Johanssen will be Konami's booth babe, and a sequel to Symphony of the Night will be announced for the PS3 during the show.
Chase @ Feb 17th 2009 3:53PM
Erection confirmed?
Longhorn4Life (PSN MariusElijah) @ Feb 17th 2009 12:16PM
E3 cant get here fast enough
Mr Khan @ Feb 17th 2009 12:18PM
Lucky then that its in June this year, huh? It did suck waiting all the way until July last couple of years
Longhorn4Life (PSN MariusElijah) @ Feb 17th 2009 12:30PM
cant wait until all those reveals and surprises are announce. I guess GDC will suffice for now
Mr Khan @ Feb 17th 2009 12:17PM
Should be a good year overall for E3. Satoru Iwata has alluded to the software that will "help us beat the PS2" showing up, aside from the fact that they did, as i said in my above post, acknowledge that their last showing was a mistake. Microsoft has promised to "break the bank," and Sony just has an incredibly strong lineup of first party titles that they could flaunt
Dirty @ Feb 17th 2009 1:19PM
Microsoft seems to have a bit more under its hat, hopefully the exciting stuff doesnt get leaked like last year. Nintendo also has the luxury of being coy with its fall line up, I expect some core announcements. I feel that Sony has been putting everything on the table, hopefully Im wrong. Im already pumped, and will be just arriving home from my honeymoon, hopefully I wont miss a keynote but oh well.
Vince @ Feb 17th 2009 12:26PM
anyone who knows anything about the RROD, what causes it, and what can fix it, knows that this is BS.
Vince @ Feb 17th 2009 12:28PM
oops, commented on the wrong article.
Dave @ Feb 17th 2009 12:29PM
The only way to REALLY bring it back is more booth babes, but please no men dressed up as Chun-Li.
Dirty @ Feb 17th 2009 1:22PM
You can dress up a man like chun li as long as we get a girl dressed as fei long ( no shirt).
artdyke @ Apr 5th 2009 5:09PM
because it's not exciting without objectifying women! :D
stfu
MowDownJoe @ Feb 17th 2009 1:10PM
That pic reminds me of the N-Gage and how god-awful it was. Maybe my eyesight's a little too keen.
OhJustSomeRandomGuy @ Feb 17th 2009 1:19PM
I'm going to let all you folks in who never attended an E3 in on a little secret:
The booth babes didn't get banned because they were too sexy. They were "unprofessional" because they had let themselves go.There were points where I would be walking down the hall and I'd have to look away from someone's brazenly displayed cottage cheese thighs.
Those women have been sitting around waiting for the call for 2 years now. They haven't been getting in shape. And because the game industry folks in the PR/Marketing areas are uncreative creatures of habit...they're going to get hired again.
IT WILL NOT BE PRETTY.
James Hyde @ Feb 18th 2009 5:15PM
Um, why are you guys excited?
E3 2009 is still closed for the regular gamer and general public. It's still the same boring crap that was last two years.
From E3's official site:
"E3 Expo 2009 is a trade-only event and is not open to the general public. "
