As much as I really WANTED to love fallout 3, at much as it COULD have been GOTY, it really seemed mediocre at best. It tried to have a rich immersive world and deep storyline but both bad voice acting, and more importantly, the more atrocious animations I've ever seen, just ruined it for me. On top of that, you spend most of your time walking around aimlessly, and there isn't much actual combat. Then once you actually do get into a battle, the combat just isn't fun. The whole game would have been better off as a book, and it's really sad because it could have stood up to games like Bioshock. disappointing

The parts where you run into mutant-raider shootouts taking cover behind atomic cars, while fending off radscorpions are kinda fun. Especially when the cars blow up while you jump off a nearby cliff, land in the river 70 feet below only to confront a pack of mirelurks.
I didn't make it sound exciting, that sequence happened to me. And it was kinda fun. I'm sure we'd all like the perfect game, but Fallout 3 does succeed to some extent in it's gameplay and overall 'post apocalyptic' approach. The little things in it are especially well done.

Personally, I had over 40 hours of solid, dense gameplay which I would gladly re-do as a nice character (which I am). My GOTY

40 hours of solid, dense gameplay? 40 hours, yes, solid? What? The gunplay is ridiculous, the AI is atrocious, the animations are horrible. None of the characters have personality, they just look like blocks of wood spewing lines out. Far from a perfect game, it's just a really big one, with pretty scenery. Yes, the landscape looks like a genuine post apocalyptic world, but the terrible animations and AI more than take away any immersion that that brings.

I liked Fallout 3, but did not love it. I think if more than 20% of the game was exciting and interesting, it would have gotten my GotY. The thing about the game is that the main quest was awesome. SPOILER ALERT!!! I really liked the chase out of Project Purity, the first time you fight the Enclave, and the whole last section was great too, but the rest of the game is just so much less entertaining. It was just entertaining enough to push through to experience the good parts.
I'm not disappointed that I got the game or that I put 44 hours into it, but I doubt I'll be getting 100% trophies (especially considering you have to reach levels 10, 15, and 20 with each karma rating - that's a minimum of 3 play throughs!)
My girlfriend just made fun of me. She still loves me though. Sigh

Fallout 3 is a good game but not a great game IMO. It had to many glitches on the PS3. I beat it but haven't put it back in since the trophy patch was released. I would also give PS3 GOTY and overall GOTY to LBP. But, I'm a sucker for that game as it's a once in a lifetime experience. I understand if others didn't see it that way.

You need to up your small guns skill in order for the sniper or any small gun to be steady in normal shooting view mode.

Rechain of Memories is actually one of the finer Squaremakes (though it doesn't take much... usually, Square Remakes are worthless ports), and definitely benefits from the transfer over to the PS2.
With that said, there's no way in hell it deserves a spot above Persona 4. It's the only KH game I've played that wasn't entirely mindnumbingly repetitive (that says a lot since it's a remake of the most repetitive KH game), but even that doesn't much help it.

I agree with this list.
Well, except for Rechain (haven't played it but I have yet to play a KH game that I liked) and FFIV (I found it pretty boring. Certainly better than III but there have been better DS games to have hit last year).

Really liked it, but it definitely has shortcomings. It was a very solid game, but just not perfect. IMO, many points of the game were only *just* interesting enough to push me to keep playing. Main quest was awesome, I just wish the whole game was as good.

Fallout 3 has it all! How can you guys not like it?
Is it because of the graphics? Or is it because its a RPG, FPS, 3rdPS game?

I couldn't agree more mate. Fallout 3 really is the best game ever.
It is better than MGS4, GOW2 and SSBB.
Fallout 3 will be the first game that I'll buy for my first Xbox360, If I can get enough pounds to buy one.

user voting ... honestly the PS3 version of Fallout 3 had some major bugs/issues like all Bethesda games.

EXACTLY. User-voting and the nature of multi-platform games makes this issue more and more prevalent, especially recently in the annual game rankings. Years like 2008 are really interesting- would MGSIV and GTAIV have gotten the hype for GOTY if it was released in November...would LBP have grown on more people if it was released earlier? Would Fable2 gotten more GOTY awards if it was patched within a week instead of months? Could FallOut3 been a beneficiary of being an exclusive to the 360?
We all complain about games not getting spread out...and even though MGSIV is the consensus PS3 GOTY (with strong contention from LBP) it really should have garnered more overall accolades much like GTAIV amongst the thousands of publications giving out these things.
I, as a gamer just loves that there is this much debate-because it means there is plenty of quality titles to discuss and revisit. Years from now we will look back on 2008 and see which of these titles held up. I do however yearn for the sweeper, the consensus choice a la Ocarina of Time.

I like it better when these lists separate multiplatform as its own category. Fallout 3 being on 3 separate systems seems like it should get its own GotY, and 360 should get an exclusive for its GotY.
If I made a list, it would have some pretty radical differences. Best multiplatform title: Mega Man 9. PS3: Crash Commando. I don't have a 360, but Gears 2 looks sick. PC would be I Wanna Be the Guy or Iji. Or maybe they should be in their own category... Indie GotY! Don't buy enough PSP to judge, got rid of my DS long ago towards Rock Band. Haven't played a Wii game since RE4 (unless you count a couple hours with Boom Blox).
This is why I don't make lists XD

You should check out Wario Shake It at some point ... It's my favorite Wii game to date. Madworld is also looking promising.

I guess I'll make a list as well just for kicks and comparisons using your rules
Overall GOTY (multiplatform) Battlefield Bad Company
360 GOTY Ninja Gaiden II
PS3 GOTY Little Big Planet
PSP GOTY Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core
DS GOTY Metal Slug 7
Wii GOTY Wario Land Shake It
I can only judge the games I played ...

Yeah, I wanted to check out Wario Land Shake It. I was a huge fan of Wario Land: Mario Land 3 on the original GB. I was put off by the full retail price though. On release day, I was still under the impression it was a WiiWare title. I may trade for it at some point.
It's going to be hard to fit any more games into this year's lineup tho. :)

I got Fallout 3 for Christmas and put it in thinking I was only going to play it for 2-3 hours before I went back to the other games I was midway through. I ended up playing it for 50+ hours in 3 weeks and still didn't explore everything.
It actually motivated me to go back and play Oblivion.
One of the most satisfying game experiences I've ever had. GOTY hands down (and this is coming from someone who bought the LE of MGS4 without owning a PS3, thinking that was going to be GOTY.)

I thought Metal Gear Solid 4 was going be my game of the year....after 128 hours of Fallout 3 and 2 completely different characters, it's won me over as game of the year. I love to read the criticism, this is probably coming from people that put a whole 2 hours into the game. I concur that it was one of the most satisfying experiences ever and deserves the praise it got.

I think it's pretty clear that most of the people who are complaining apparently thought the game was an FPS when it's not.
This is probably the first time I've ever heard complaints about things like "can't hold the sniper rifle steady" and " the AI sucks" from an RPG. Idiots, you can't hold the sniper rifle steady until you raise your skill levels in small weapons, and RPG combat has always been about virtual dice rolls, not twitch shooting and run-n-gun gameplay.

Ugh. Fallout 3 is soooo overrated. It really is Oblivion with a model/texture swap: same frustrations, same repetition, same lack of loot drops. Most overrated game since Bioshock.
