The Onion review mirrors my own thoughts. However, I have not touched a fighting game (including SF4) since VF4. Every fighting game since has had that exact "been there" feeling to it, and I saw nothing in the previews of SF4 to change that feeling. If you're still into fighting games I'm sure this is the bees knees, but what about those of us who lost interest? "...need not apply."

Read the Onion Review and thought "Yep, that's exactly why I couldn't care less that this game is being released."

That onion review is great, and I totally agree with you. SFIV is a good game, and I'd give it a solid 7 or 7.5. The inflated review scores it's getting are akin to what happened when GT4 came out - everyone shat themselves over it for a month or two, then came to their senses and realized that, while it is a good game, there's no way it was deserving of all the 10s.

I'm a huge SF3 fan, and the "additions" in IV pale in comparison. Where's the shit-ton of crazy characters that were put in from 2 to 3? Instead, we get 4 generic new characters (well, I do like Rufus).

The only thing that moves this into sequel territory are the graphics. I would have preferred 2D, high res sprites to be honest - can you imagine if they made the animation BETTER than SF3, but in HD? It'd be gorgeous! However, the expressions on the character faces are great and do add personality.

But yeah, instead of a true sequel, we got Street Fighter 2: EX. Why waste new character slots on putting all those original characters in the game, anyway? Would there really be rioting in the streets if people didn't get a chance to play as Dhalsim in 4?

But I digress. It's a good game that will ultimately be forgotten that I would score 7 or 7.5 - not 9.5 or 10.

Zuburi, I made that exact complaint a while ago and was jumped for it. At first, they focused on the new characters and I was pleased. But then they started focusing on the old ones more and more and I resigned myself to the fact that this is going to be a reduex and hoped for at least some returning SFIII characters but even that was taken from me.

However, I'm getting this just because KOFXII keeps being delayed... I was always more on an SNK man anyway. SNK, I feel, have the much better character designs.

Fighting games do get old quick, especially nowadays when they're just eye candy. If arcades were still popular here, I'll probably burn a few bucks on this.

Sheppy, I got downvoted into gundam territory for making the same points earlier. However, the gaming hivemind needs something to be in print to take it as a good point. I was having a conversation with a gaming store clerk about why I like 3 better than 4 and why I felt it was more of an evolution, and every one of his counter arguments was pretty much quoted verbatim from Game Informer/EGM/Gamespot.

I know what you mean about KOF, and I'm looking forward to it, too. However, I've always liked the Capcom side better. The KOF games always seem to animate funny to me. I really hope they clean it up a bit. But yeah, even if they don't, it's still really high on my "anticipated" list.

Someone else on here (forgot who, sorry!) pointed out BlazBlue to me, which I have no idea how that one got past me. It looks like it animates more like Guilty Gear and less like SF3, though.

At the least, couldn't they have put some characters from 3/Alpha in instead of EVERYONE from 2? I'd take Ibuki/R. Mika/Q over Dhalsim/Vega/Honda.

Oh well. Here's looking to Street Fighter 5!

@ Maurice M

I feel the same exact way. I haven't played a fighting game since Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in the arcade. I am curious if the majority of gamers out there even care about fighting games anymore.

After watching the reviews Street Fighter IV is actually lacking in the features department if you ask me. I wish the game had some more modes of play or a few mini-games in it.

I think a lot of the reviewers gave this game such a high score solely based on nostalgia for the old days.

I'm still interested in picking this game up somewhere down the road purely for the nostalgia and fresh coat of paint. I'll probably pick it up when I can find it used for cheap.

I agree with the first two posters here for the most part. Though I can totally see people loving this game that have been dying for a new good fighter. The fighting genre has been pretty dry recently, unlike the FPS genre. SF4 is really old-school too, not really my thing, I'm more into the SC style.

Certainly looks beautiful though! A must buy for fans of hardcore Japanese fighters.

I actually find their reviews of both games and film to be pretty dead on with mine. That is to say nothing on SFIV, just the Onion art reviews in general. The AV Club in general does not retain the tone of the rest of the paper.

It can be disorienting quickly changing from bold-faced satire to honest reviews though.

PSS-

More reviews on the 360 version affect it's lower score.

Had the 360 version only one review that was 100, then it'd read 100 on metacritic.

"Had the 360 version only one review that was 100, then it'd read 100 on metacritic."

I know this is going to sound like I'm picking on your but I assure you I am not. If it only had one score it would say there is no score because it is awaiting on 4 reviews. Just saying ... 4 scores minimum before metacritic posts an average score.

Regardless, more reviews in, the average is likely to go down. You can't go around saying "Xgame PS3 version is better because metacritic says so" when it's only because the few reviews it has are only high numbers.

Oh, and no. I'm not that Ryan. *checks Ryan's post history* god, no. Lol.

Ever since my glory days in MKII on the N64 the only fighter I've played with any consistency is Brawl. My brother use to be very into Tekken, but I couldn't stand it. Soooo, yeah, MKII was the last 'traditional' fighter I ever really cared about. I just dunno if I have it in me to get back into the genre.

Thanks, I enjoy holding low kick for 5 seconds.

I'm right there with you man. I just can't get into fighting games anymore either. I gave it the old college try with Soul Caliber 4 (which was incredible) and to a lesser extent MK vs DCU (not great but not bad) and I couldn't stay interested for more than an hour at best.

I still play MK 2 sometimes over the PSN and I have Tekken 2 as a PS1 classic on my PSP. It just seems like a stale and stagnant genre. I have an interest in FF Dissidia (my friend let me try his JAP copy) and it was pretty fun.

I couldn't even get into SSBBrawl for longer than a week. I would love to see someone up the ante and really try to reninvent the genre in some sort of amazing way. Honestly I would love to see Sony and/or Microsoft do some sort of Smash bros type of fighter with their IP's. Imagine a game with Kratos, Drake, Ratchet, Hale, Sly Cooper etc ... or Masterchief, Fenix, and whatever other IP's MS owns.

My favorite fighters of all time would have to be ...
1. Mortal Kombat II
2. Killer Instinct I
3. Tekken II
4. Samurai Showdown I

Honorable mentions include Primal Rage, Mortal Kombat I & III, Virtua Fighter II, Street Fighter II, Soul Caliber I, II & III and whatever else I can't remember that was also good.

If Rare released a new Killer Instinct or remade thr original for PSN, XBLA & VC it would probably be enough to get me excited about the genre again.

To elaborate further ...

The last time I remember a fighting game that was outside the box it was Powerstone on the Dreamcast. They really did a great job with that title and I yearn for it to be released as a downloadable title. Awesome game. One of the best ever and top 5 dreamcast games. Darkstalkers should also be in my honorable mention category along with final fight.

i agree with that sony or microsoft cross-ip brawl. kratos vs. the patapons would be so epic in so many ways (patapons FTW of course) and sly cooper and team vs. ratchet and clank could be sweet too. or even better, a sony vs. microsoft vs. ninty epic war. all the sony mascots vs. the microsoft mascots vs. the ninty mascots. it could be called Console Wars. ever dreamed of sackboy vs. mario? now it's possible.

My girlfriend just bought Wario Shake It over the weekend, know how much you love that one. Looks pretty sweet so I'll have that to play as well, I like watching his royal fatness squeeze down the pipes.

When Killzone drops i would like an honest opnion from you, about it. Not implying that you would be dishonest but, i have come to view your opinion as more logical rather than some prefer to say *gulp* fanboy-ish.

ie:

To be concise ,Gears of War 2 was a good game, but not good enough overall for "me", which = trade in after completion.

Seriously dude that game is so awesome I can't begin to explain it. I don't know why or how but it resonated with me in a magical kind of way. I'm on record as saying it's my favorite Wii game thus far. I could do without Wario and his crude behavior but that's also part of the charm behind the game. Great pick up by your girlfriend.

My fiance recent got Mario Party and that's also a damn fun game. The thing I can say about the Wii is it sure is loads of fun. I guess that's what it's all about in the end anyway. I could do without the wii-mote but it's not a big deal.

At first I laughed, but I live in a glass house because I could never do the forward, down, diagonal moves for uppercuts, etc. When the demo for HD Remix hit I was at a friends house waiting for them to be ready to go out and just sat and tried over and over until it clicked. I still can't do it consistently on the Hori stick (damn square track)...

LOL , when i was about 12 maybe younger(??), SFII mysteriously appeared in our local pizza shop. That was the beginning of kids losing lunch money/ allowance at an alarming rate. In response to your dilemma, NO ONE KNEW any of the "special" moves at the time.

I was the "man" using Dhalsim, and a series of floor sweeps(slides) and stretchy arm techniques. Until the (1 week later)day came...

HADOUKEN!

Wtf? Who is this(older)guy, and how does he use this invincible magic that renders my elastic arms useless!!???

Gah Onion! You awaken the beast within...

I want to bash them, yet something is holding my fist back. SFIV (Arcade) has been out a while now, in China Town NYC(unsure if its still there), accompanied by long line and waiting list. I must say the game play is tight, accompanied by visuals that give it a whole new feel. They have a point that relates to some but overall the game is awesome.

i think the reviewer him/herself is over the "nostalgia" of SF.

How much "new" is it, though? I'm never one to advocate the constant reinvention of the wheel, but its something that fighting games need to remain relevant as a genre, and Street Fighter has always led the pack in the past...

The point being where does it deviate, and to what extent does it help or hinder the experience?
