The economy's cold shadow has begun to loom over Rare, with the Banjo Kazooie developer telling GI.biz that it is undergoing restructuring that could leave a "small number" of employees cleaning out their desks. The effort is part of a broader move by studio-owner Microsoft to tighten its financial belt, an effort that has already left a number of key employees on the unemployment line so far.
According to studio manager Mark Betteridge, this retooling is needed in order to "speed development and better manage the scale required to create high quality games." Betteridge further notes that Rare has four separate unspecified titles "recently underway," though we wonder how many of these projects will be able to make it through the studio's newly-constricted pipeline.

Rare games are too good for this to happen to them. I do not know why people bash on them so much. Claiming they make bad games- is wrong. Every single game they have made since the Microsoft-buy-out has been great. While it may not be earth shattering like in the N64 era, the quality of games produced are still fantastic.
Support Rare and buy their 5 360 games! Yes, they made FIVE already. They came out in this order:
Kameo: Elements of Power,
Perfect Dark Zero,
Viva Pinata,
Viva Pinata 2: Trouble in Paradise,
Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.
Support them!

See my post below. I played all of those games sans Banj Kazooie and they all sucked. Now, Viva Pinata didn't suck like Kameo and Perfect Dark sucked but I couldn't get into it at all.
Like Aggie said Rare needs to find a way to somehow bring back Killer Instinct. If they could do that and it was somehow exclusive to the 360 I would buy another 360 just for that game.

Kameo is one of my favorite 360 games, and I have all of the 'big' games (GTA4, Gears, Halo,Fallout, etc.).

Honestly- I am a Nintendo Fanboy, but a big reason for me to get a 360 was Microsoft's ownership of Rare. I do not only buy Rare games, but it was a huge selling point for me.
I love my 360 :-)

I admit Perfect Dark was meh but Viva Piñata was fun but the problem is that they always release these games right when something like Halo or Gears shows up.
Also “the rest suck”, Aggie have you tried nuts and bolts? Is Awesome and the demo doesn't represent it fairly, there is a lot humor ,missions and the only game that is kinda like Super Mario Galaxy for the x360.
What I liked about Nuts & Bolts is that it rewards creativity and thinking outside of the box.
If you want to support Rare I heard Grabbed by the Ghoulies is going to be released in the xbox originals very soon also I heard it was a great game.

I believe that Rare's problems stem from the fact that not only are they victims of this extremely shitty economy but they are also victims of their own past successes. I don't think that it's bashing to suggest that their titles in recent years have been a bit lacking on the fun side- and this is important: *when compared to their previous titles*. I have played every single game Rare has released going back to Blast Corps for the N64, and I can say without a doubt that they peaked on the 64 as a developer and have done little since then that sticks with me, and yes, that includes the tremendously overrated Star Fox Adventures. Not to say that they haven't made *decent games*- that would be just plain wrong- but when you think about how much fun Jet Force Gemini, GoldenEye, Banjo 1&2, Blast Corps and Conker were (to name a few) as compared to PD0, Kameo, and the VP series there can be little argument that they have lost their fastball. Granted, they might be throwing in the high 80s, but that's a damn bit different than the 100 MPH Nolan Ryan Express they were throwing in 1996. I don't measure them against what everyone else is doing, I measure them against my expectation interest as is relates to their past triumphs. With the exception of Nuts & Bolts (which I haven't played) to say that every game that they have made has been "great" is pure wishful thinking. I hope more than anything that they hang around and can recapture their past glories with titles that make me glad I am a gamer- but I'm not holding my breath.

Rare blows this generation. I haven't played a single good game from them this entire console cycle. Bear (!) in mind that I did miss out on the Banjo-Kazooie racing game.

Yeah, Diddy Kong Racing on DS, IIRC, I heard it wasn't really up to par with Mario Kart DS.

If you mean Nuts and Bolts is not a racing game.
I think something like Battlebots would be a better example ecept Nuts & bolts is actually good.Viva Piñata is also fine.

My personal opinions on Rare games this gen:
-Perfect Dark Zero: Dumb as hell
-Kameo: Very fun, easily best launch 360 game. Kameo is underrated IMO.
-Viva Pinata: Couldn't get into it.
-Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts: I've played a little bit of it, but not enough to give a good opinion. I enjoyed what I played though. I do understand why old banjo fans wouldn't like it though.
-Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise: I dunno. It's coming from amazon right now so hopefully it's more intuitive than the original! I wanna like it.
Diddy Kong Racing DS: Eh...If you liked the original you would enjoy it. The 6 or 8 player online was cool, but it needs more items like Mario kart.

Nutman has the right idea but N&B is really underappreciated and easily one of best exclusives in the x360 with Dead Rising.
PDZ pretty meh, Viva Piñata I liked it but there wasn't enough things to do. Too many limitations I heard Trouble in Paradise is better tho’.

Agreed. I had fun with it intill by 45th jiggy and by then I was praying for LOGs choice vehicles because I was so damn tired of building vehicles for simple tasks.

I'm really surprised it's taken Rare this long to restructure. It's a development house overflowing with unnecessary waste and far too many people for the work they do.
Oh, and flameofdoom666, you forgot 2 Rare games in the past 2 years. They also did Diddy Kong Racing on the DS, and Jetpac Refueld on XBLA.

Rare, here is a tip for this ressesion
"Come back to Nintendo"
You saw your greatest time with Nintendo budy. Yeah, they can be bitches sometimes... most fo the time, but still, you had pretty good sales with most of your games, and other were the most expected of the N64/Gamecuybe era.
Besides, developing on the Wii is cheaper than in the 360!!!!!!
Still, this recession is hitting hard everyone..... except Nintendo of course, they are doing fine

It still wouldn't be the same.
Many of the people of the original Rareware have left
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rareware#Staff_departures
Hell, even the founders, Tim and Chris Stamper, left the company on 07

If the guys behind Nuts & Bolts can still do games for the Wii they should do so.
I could use more Wii titles.
The x360 corwd doesn't apreciates good original games more like "Tits and Gore or GTFO".

Speed development. Jesus, Rare has already been Microsoft's most productive studio on 360, and arguably they've been turning out some of the highest quality MGS games this generation, aside from perhaps Epic. Audience be damned, they're damn fine games.

I can't vote you up enough for that comment.
They should totally go back with Nintendo, the games they are doing are not for the X360 usual crowd.Only KI 3 would sell in the x360.

They already have 5 retail games, 2 DS games, and 2 Arcade games!
How much more productive can a studio be?!
The problem is, their games do not cater to the 360 fanbase- and I hope it never does to a certain extent. I love Rare's charm, and to most that is 'kiddy.' Perfect Dark, Get Force Gemani, and Killer Instrict are the only franchises they have that do not seem 'kiddy.' Maybe they should try those out (PDZ was a good launch title, but by today's standards- its mediocre)?
Banjo Tooie is coming out in 2 months too!

I'm still waiting for that one, with the GTA IV Dlc I'll need a new Hard Drive.
Now that seriously why nobody liked N&B? I thought was fantastic. If it is for the demo those are the easiest levels and not everything is about racing.
There are a lot of missions and online you can build your own especial vehicle.Online is pretty good but there is like a handful of people playing it hell even MK VS DC sold more units.

B&K Nuts and Bolts? What was that? I was expecting it to be THE platformer to own on 360, It could've been the KING of platformers on the console, and they give us that mess. Innovation is good, but only when done the right way.
Viva Piñata was OK, PDZ Meh... and I haven't played Kameo yet.
I've fond memories from Rare products, so I don't want them to die out. But as of now, I can't really remember the last Rare game I really enjoyed. Conker for the original XBOX maybe? Oh yeah! That'd be a great game, a new Conker one. But don't make it a racing thingie, please. Killer Instinct and Battletoads would be sweet too, from some comments above.

Doesn't matter to me. Stopped being Rareware the minute Grant Kirkhope left.
Now it's just Rare: one of the infinitely shitty 3rd party companies that once made a good game. Terrible shame, though. At least most of the original team is still out there and working in some capacity.
