Wii sales propel Call of Duty: World at War past COD4
68
Chew on this: Call of Duty: World at War had greater combined US sales on current-gen consoles in its first three months of release than did Call of Duty 4. World at War achieved this milestone despite COD4 outselling it by nearly 400,000 Xbox 360 units during the comparable months. A rise in PS3 sales from COD4 to World at War -- just over 130,000 units -- helped to slightly offset this difference, but the introduction of a Wii version of World at War (COD4 had no such entry) tipped the scales in favor of the latest Call of Duty entry. In December alone, the Wii World at War (pictured) sold more than 366,000 units.

As for our Xbox 360 and PS3 salesassumptions, uh, analysis? Gears of War 2 and Left 4 Dead definitely hindered World at War sales on Xbox 360 from November through January, while on PS3, there simply wasn't a strong resistance to choosing World at War as the holiday's go-to shooter. Will Modern Warfare 2 follow suit? We expect a surge in both PS3 and Xbox 360 enlisters -- but we're not sold on the concept of modern warfare on Wii ... and neither is Infinity Ward, we imagine.

Yeah, I'm playing W@W right now and it's a quality game fanboys would be jacking each other off over had it had an Infinity Ward logo instead "shitty gayarch".
I can't wait till Treyarch drops the CoD franchise and once again focuses on their own games so those whiny haters can finally fuck off.

some of us don't have the option of getting these games on the 360 or ps3, i enjoy COD W@W on the wii very much, its online isn't full intact from the other versions, but there is always people on, and i enjoy playing with my brother -- it's good times. I do hope they improve from here on and out and this was a starting point...

Looks like I may need to add CoD: WaW Wii to my wish list. No 360/PS3 and my PC can't run any of the CoDs past the first one. PC upgrade's a while away and I don't plan on ever buying a 360 or PS3. So Wii it is. I much more interested in story than graphics or multiplayer anyway, so I'll most likely enjoy the game.

Well, if you like story you better reconsider a 360 and get Call of Duty 4 because it actually has a very cool story and WaW tries to fake a story, but there's not much substance there.

This is why I love Joystiq...they're one of the few companies call out Nintendo's bullshit, and call out their love of developers who feel the same way, IE Infinity Ward.

Unless this was sarcastic, uhh, you haven't been on the internet since last July much, have you?
Everyone loves to shit on Nintendo now, not call out their bullshit, but often make up bullshit of their own and sling it at them. Joystiq has actually (mostly) been nicer than most

Sorry, but no. I'm sorry, but I (and a lot of others) feel that Nintendo could have still found a profitable path without resorting to the total and utter jettisoning of support for the core gamer. As a console maker it is Nintendo's responsibility to make sure there is a steady flow of software, first and third party, for all of their consumers. They have not done this at all...in fact, in some areas they have REGRESSED upon this.

So you're telling me four somewhat core games for the Wii (and zero released during the holiday season) ISN'T jettisoning core support?
The fact remains, Infinity Ward isn't going to downgrade their games for the Wii. They already said during the hype for CoD4 that they'd never work on that console. They're artists, and they refuse to devalue their work by porting it to a less powerful system. And since they're one of Activision's biggest assets, it's pretty clear that they let them do whatever they want.

So wait, the Wii version sells 366,000 in one month (compared to 130,000 on the PS3 over 3 months) and Infinity Ward ISN'T going to capitalize on that?
I can see why. They'd have to develop a whole new engine, create a whole new control scheme, make an online infrastructure. That's just too much work. If only another company did that for them already and they could just build off of it...

The Wii's the only console in my house this generation, and you can all bet your asses I'll buy Modern Warfare 2 if it comes.

Not a surprising statistic to me.
1. I can't find a reason to own an XBox.
2. I've never bought a game for my launch PS3.
3. I've bought about ten games for Wii.
For someone like me, who has played every game in existence, a new control scheme is the only innovation left in gaming. If I want HD gaming I'll get on my computer and play on my 56" television with mouse/keyboard not that gamepad crap. Let's not forget the ridiculously larger market for Wii/casual than for the hardcore stuff. I welcome the rise of my casual innovative Wii overlord. It's about time someone breathed new life into gaming.
