Joystiq Review: GTA IV's 'The Lost & Damned' (DLC)

Now, here's the part where you make your choice: "Continue" on to read our full review or jump to our video review below and give your reading eyes a rest. [And don't forget to enter for your chance to win The Lost and Damned right here!]
The length of The Lost and Damned's campaign is fairly epic, and without the devolution that occurred in GTA IV's story halfway through. Focusing on The Lost and the people surrounding the club, players will meet a slew of new and interesting denizens of Liberty City, and even run into a few old ones. Once you scratch the surface, however, you'll notice The Lost and Damned feels familiar.
That's because most of the quests and errands you're charged with completing in the episode, you've done before in GTA IV ... and in GTA San Andreas ... and so on. It's merely a matter of taste, because if you're the type of gamer who's subscribed to Rockstar's formula in the past, then you probably finished GTA IV and you won't mind playing through this expansion.
It's not all recycled material, though. There are 25 "Gang War" events that have you riding with a pack of your brothers and battling opposing gang, the Angels of Death. There are even some new weapons, including the deadly grenade launcher, automatic 9mm pistol, and some pipe bombs to help you take out the competition. Twelve races are also available and highly reminiscent of Road Rash. So ... that's awesome.
There are more activities to enjoy with your comrades, as well. Thanks to a smart stat-based upgrade system, your crew can improve themselves the more they ride with you, or as you place them in combat scenarios. Simply call them up on the phone and request their presence and they're riding along with you, bantering back and forth. It really helps the world seem more real, and beefing up the gang is a worthwhile time sink.
Rockstar also spiced up the multiplayer, offering a few distinct variations on the previous gamplay modes. For one, Chopper vs. Chopper is a pretty compelling mode, where one player tries to race through checkpoints, while the other pilots a gun-toting helicopter, trying to prevent the racer from finishing. There's also Witness Protection, which is a Lost and Damned variant of of GTA IV's Cops 'n Crooks, where the gang of bikers tries to stop an armored bus carrying snitches. All of the new modes are entertaining, especially Own the City, in which two gangs battle over territory in the city.
With the depth of content available here, GTA fans will find the new downloadable content well worth $20. One could easily dump twenty (or more!) hours into The Lost and Damned and still find things to do. But if you weren't already an initiate of the franchise, don't expect The Lost and Damned to convert you.
[Warning: Contains potty-mouthed bikers]

Makes no sense why they removed the annihilator helicopter from free mode. Such BS.
marvin69 @ Feb 18th 2009 11:08AM
It's there just moved!
Cj @ Feb 18th 2009 11:13AM
Where then? The attack chopper not the small crappy ones.
Eric @ Feb 18th 2009 11:06AM
I am loving it so far. The New Weapons are great the automatic 9mm pistol is very bad ass.
Magresda @ Feb 18th 2009 11:18AM
My Xbox RROD'd right around the time GTA IV game out, thus I got it for the PS3 instead. Kind of regretting that now.
Danny @ Feb 19th 2009 6:30AM
Wait, so it's either play it on his second-choice console at 26FPS or buy it for his _broken_ Xbox and play it at a 'superior' 0FPS? Super logic there.
Patrick @ Feb 18th 2009 11:20AM
I'll be glad if Vlad is in TLAD.
The Alex @ Feb 18th 2009 11:20AM

aggrazel @ Feb 18th 2009 11:31AM
I purchased the expansion from the online marketplace so when I got home and turned on my 360 it would start d/ling immediately. Got home at 5pm.
Around 11pm I went to bed, it was still d/ling ... doh.
I wish you could preload the content and then just 'unlock' it on release day.
xenocidic @ Feb 18th 2009 11:41AM
Get a real ISP?
aggrazel @ Feb 18th 2009 11:44AM
As soon as a real one offers service to my house, I'll be right on top of that. :)
Marty @ Feb 18th 2009 11:45AM
You could have just left your Xbox on while you were gone for the day.
Jigga @ Feb 18th 2009 11:51AM
Yeah, a preload, alla Steam would be cool. I would also like the ability to have it download when you purchase something from the web marketplace and not just queue it up.
But here's another option for you to try... if you have background downloading enabled, you could have started the download before work/school, left for the day and it should be complete by the time you return home at 5. That's what I do sometimes.
freedomfromconformity @ Feb 18th 2009 1:06PM
What I did was wake up early and set it to download while my 360 was off. By the time I got home it was done.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 18th 2009 1:09PM
Me too. Worked perfectly.
Now if I had only tried that with flower. That damn game took about 6 hours for me to d/l on launch day!
Tiptup300 @ Feb 18th 2009 1:13PM
I wish I could just buy it, MS won't accept my credit card for some unknown reason. Every time I goto update it, it says "Charged Successfully, you can now use this card", but right under that it says "Declined." I guess I just gotta get another credit card and switch it back/forth.
Altairio @ Feb 18th 2009 11:31AM
Did they add checkpoints to missions as well? I died at the first gunfight and was pleasantly suprised I didn't have to drive out there all over again. That was one of the biggest annoyances with GTA4.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 18th 2009 11:35AM
Yeah, I noticed that too. I wonder if they patched that feature into the regular game. That used to drive me crazy.
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Feb 18th 2009 11:55AM
From what I've been reading, that handy dandy addition has NOT been slipped into the original GTA IV.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 18th 2009 11:34AM
Having fun with it so far. I ran a few missions last night and am digging the story and voicework. I'm also really glad to see that they tweaked the bike mechanic so that I don't go flying off every 5 seconds. That was one of my biggest worries.
Halo2Master @ Feb 18th 2009 11:44AM
I downloaded TLAD last night (took over an hour, which I guess makes sense for 2GB).
Unfortunately though, as soon as I started the first "real" mission, my xbox froze (this happened to me maybe 4 or 5 times while playing through Niko's story too).
I'll have to wait until I get out of work and pack a nice bowl before I can tell if I like it or not, I guess.
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Feb 18th 2009 11:55AM
A nice bowl of Cheetos... riiiight?
Halo2Master @ Feb 18th 2009 11:58AM
Uhh, yeah, Cheetos. Yeah sure. That's what I meant.
CannabisPrime @ Feb 18th 2009 12:06PM
It's been my experience that Cheetos come after.
And it's not in a bowl.
It's the whole bag. And it's gone in a half hour.
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Feb 18th 2009 2:24PM
...I haven't smoked in 13 months.
Damn you folks :(
AwesomeTown @ Feb 18th 2009 11:43AM
Definitely sounds like it's worth $20, but I don't think I'm ready to jump back into the same old GTA again.
SToNeP2277 @ Feb 18th 2009 11:47AM
I love this add on its a full game well worth the 1600 MS Points.
Jigga @ Feb 18th 2009 11:53AM
Me too. I really enjoyed GTA4 but I rushed though it and didn't get to enjoy everything. This will just give me a reason to come back and play some more. Now I just need to find some deals for Live points.
dubble_deuce @ Feb 18th 2009 11:48AM
I played GTA4 for about 10 hours, I thought that it wasn't nearly as good as San Andreas. Not wasting my time or money to download this to see a mans c@ck!
WRE @ Feb 18th 2009 4:39PM
I'm sure with much less time and no money at all you could see much more than just one man's cock!
Marty @ Feb 18th 2009 11:49AM
Glad to see that this expansion wasn't just a set of a few new weapons and cars and a mission or two - I'll consider picking it up.
caserb @ Feb 18th 2009 11:56AM
So far, I've liked what I've seen of the new DLC. I'm probably more than halfway through it by now.
But seriously, Rockstar - I really, really hope that for the next DLC you bring back San Andreas - jetpacks and hovercraft intact, as well maybe even adding stuff like hang gliding and parasailing and hell, even making a skatepark that you can actually do a little bit of skating in.
Hell, I'll pay 30 to 40 for that kind of content. I want my San Andreas goofy fun back. I can only imagine how awesome it would be with the new physics system and better graphics to portray the beautiful California coastline and nasty, smoggy inland empire.
Jambi_Bum @ Feb 18th 2009 12:21PM
If you want all of that. Play Saints Row 2. Don't ya know? GTA is all about realism now.
Lord Negatron @ Feb 18th 2009 12:54PM
As i start backtracking mentally, besides the "fictional gangs" San Andreas wasn't all that goofy or less serious than GTAIV.
You are right about the Hovercraft and Jetpacks etc, but to Jambi Bum, correct me if i am wrong, but San Andreas had themes of "friends turning on you for money and drugs, crack smoking", amongst other abuse issues.
The same radio skits and commercials ranging from ridiculous to hilarious remain, and now you can add TV into the mix.
If you notice, the game setting is winter/ "cold" season on a city built to resemble NY. So "dark" is expected somewhat. LA - NY....We can't be anymore different.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Feb 18th 2009 1:07PM
"As i start backtracking mentally, besides the "fictional gangs" San Andreas wasn't all that goofy or less serious than GTAIV."
Pretty much. CJ's story was as serious as Nico's. So I don't necessarily see how San Andreas was goofy.
caserb @ Feb 18th 2009 5:53PM
I'm not talking about the storyline itself - the Saint's Row series takes the goofy storyline crap to a whole new level, I'm simply talking about giving the player more interesting/goofy stuff to play around with - CJ had no real reason to drive a hovercraft around or race a go-kart or get fat, or even, say - that whole sub-plot with his hippie friend and the jetpack and breaking out of an Area 51 sort of place? Yeah, come on guys - tell me that was stone-cold serious.
That's not supposed to be a slag towards the GTA series. I like GTA 4 a lot and TLAD is a great addition with a superb story, but a part of me wishes there was more deviation in terms of vehicles and areas to explore.
I think Rockstar still has it in them to give a new iteration in the series a serious, compelling storyline and still crap all over Saint's Row (no insult to SR 2, I own and beat the crap out of it and still enjoy it from time to time) - in terms of sheer interactivity.
Deeznuts420 @ Feb 18th 2009 11:56AM
and also c*cks
J @ Feb 18th 2009 12:03PM
All I can say is Billy Grey is the shit!
theguy @ Feb 18th 2009 12:08PM
Loved GTA IV and will d/l this for sure on Friday night... School and work has taken over my free time so I am going to have to wait a few more days :(
I will run through the campaign and hae it done in a couple of days...
joeybeast @ Feb 18th 2009 12:16PM
New episode of Republican Space Ranger is awesome.
Once they put their helmets on I realize Rockstar was making fun of Halo.
Deck @ Feb 18th 2009 1:44PM
Oh man, there's new episodes of that!? YES! That sold me alone! Though I already have been planning on buying it.
Desert Eagle @ Feb 19th 2009 5:10PM
You know, when I see Republican Space Rangers, I can't help but think it would be awesome to make it a real series. Yep, this would be by far, one of the best toons to air on TV, and would easily rival series like South Park and ATHF.
Just think about it. One episode per week, 10-15 minutes without commercial cuts, about 20-24 episodes per season (with the very first episode starting at a 3## number for good laughs), 100% uncensored, those gold lines the Commander says, and for Adult Swim view. Rockstar would be richer than it is now.
Here's hoping this dream of mine becomes true!
HighFiveJesus @ Feb 18th 2009 12:29PM
bring it to PC, you owe us for the initial disappointments. Just because the game runs great after 2 patches (and its still not enough for some) doesn't mean we forget.
otherwise someone will find a crazy way to mod most of it into the game.
Halo2Master @ Feb 18th 2009 12:45PM
I thought the whole idea was that this DLC was a 360 exclusive. I have a feeling that even if Rockstar wanted to port it to PC and/or PS3, Microsoft would stop them.
HighFiveJesus @ Feb 18th 2009 1:33PM
It probably is, but i like to hope its exclusive in the same way the fallout 3 downloadable stuff is, its still on the LIVE marketplace either way. Microsoft would be blocking itself from additional revenue.
