Metal Gear Online 'Scene Expansion' adds playable Raiden, Vamp
It's about time that Metal Gear Online got back on the scene with a brand-new expansion pack. As revealed by Famitsu, this third DLC pack from Konami, titled "Scene," brings more Metal Gear Solid 4 characters and new map locales into the online battlefield. Both Vamp and Raiden will be added to the playable roster in this expansion, and three new territories are available to explore: "Hazard House" (a countryside manor), "Outer Outlet" (a shopping arcade) and "Revaged [sic] Riverfront" (a riverside town).
Though these first details currently only pertain to a Japanese release, we expect Scene to hit worldwide just like the Gene and Meme expansions that came before it. There are only two questions left that need answering: When should we expect Scene to arrive .... and what new word that rhymes with "spleen" will Konami use for the next expansion?
[Update: Konami just sent out a press release stating that the Scene expansion will be available in North America by March. Those who pre-order the pack off Konami's shop one week ahead of release will get complimentary "cardboard man" headgear. We've also got new screen shots and some new details on the maps after the break.]

Nice to see that it's still being updated now and then. I really need to get back on this game.

with this new update they will mostly like add a new skill just like with the other 2 packs
Shader @ Feb 18th 2009 12:31PM
I'd like to get back into this as I really enjoyed it. Problem is I can't remember my Konami ID, ID password, game ID, or game password. I don't want to go through that all again.
Vincent060 @ Feb 18th 2009 1:25PM
Why didn't you just save your gameID and password to the PS3? That's what I did and it auto logs in for me.
Tiptup300 @ Feb 18th 2009 1:52PM
God I love how standardized PSN is!
Popfrogs @ Feb 18th 2009 1:59PM
@Titup: Weak trolling attempt. This game completely dodges the PSN, it uses Konami's epic fail system for networking, expansion pack sales, ID management, etc.
Even Kojima was pissed off that Konami went this route, he has mentioned it in interviews before but said it was out of his hands.
Kinsey @ Feb 18th 2009 3:21PM
So will this update get rid of the Konami ID .... no? .... then they dont deserve my money. ;)
"Why didn't you just save your gameID and password to the PS3? That's what I did and it auto logs in for me."
I did that the first time I logged in and guess what, it didnt save the last time I tried to login. Maybe one day (again) I'll attempt to redo the Konami ID, but as of now I have planty of online shooters to keep me busy, so its just not worth the hassle.
RookieJr @ Feb 18th 2009 12:33PM
Seems to me that this may be the last MGO expansion they come out with. I remember back in the day, reading an interview with Hideo Kojima on MGS3, that the first three games in the MGS series were based around "Meme(MGS2), Gene(MGS1), and Scene(MGS3)".
Unless they came out with another descriptor for MGS4 that I missed, seems to me that they could be done here.
Still, MGO is a fun game, and it is nice to see that they are still doing things with it.
Kuukai @ Feb 18th 2009 1:57PM
Actually, the fourth theme was "Sense." To sum it up: Liquid Snake was a genetic clone, Raiden was a memetic clone, the rift between The Boss and Big Boss was a result of the political "scene" around them, and finally Liquid Ocelot was a clone that captured the essence, the "sense" of being Liquid. They use the word a lot more in the original Japanese version, there's talk about how they lost sight of The Boss's "sense"...
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 18th 2009 12:48PM
How bout a patch that makes it fun, Konami? No? Ok then carry on...
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 18th 2009 1:37PM
The truth hurts, eh?
:P
Hyams @ Feb 18th 2009 1:38PM
I wouldn't say it's not fun exactly, it just pales in comparison to several other online games available.
Whilst I played it myself, I enjoyed it, but at the same time found myself craving for Warhawk instead.
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 18th 2009 3:41PM
I tried to get into it but just couldn't. It's boring and no fun. If it were on 360 it would have dropped out of LIVES Top 10 after 1-2 weeks. Just my opinion of course. It's too slow and stiff, like it or not.
Andrew Ryan @ Feb 18th 2009 5:39PM
A.K.A you suck at MGO?
ruben magana @ Feb 18th 2009 12:53PM
yeah this game is broken and the matchmaking is horrible. konami is another example of a japanese developer that just doesn't "get it".
Vincent060 @ Feb 18th 2009 1:27PM
No one uses auto matchmaking. Everyone goes to the Free Battle lobby. Just join a game that has the settings you want or make your own. It's not hard.
Juno Loire @ Feb 19th 2009 4:58AM
Like MGS4 being such a bomb, right? Heck, all those japanese guys couldn't program a thing. Take Super Mario Galaxy and Persona 4, for example. And companies in general? Capcom and Square Enix are both nearly broke from their flops! With all that said, I'd like to ask you:
Get what?
ruben magana @ Feb 19th 2009 2:08PM
konami doesn't get online play. and sales has nothing at all to do with the quality of a game. mgs4 is a fantastic game which i own. the mgo portion though feels like it belongs on ps2. konami failed to take any of the advancements made in modern shooters or any online enabled game. the matchmaking is terrrible the sign-up process you have to go through is convoluted. and the update process of the game is almost broken.
Joystick Hero @ Feb 18th 2009 12:58PM
Oh man, please, please, PLEASE, let the next add-on be the "Peen Expansion".
...Erm, not that I NEED a peen expansion, or anything.
*cough*
Smitty @ Feb 18th 2009 1:08PM
Now add some freaking trophies so the whore in me wants to play this gem! Of course I'm fairly certain Konami already said "Hell no" to this request...
FD @ Feb 18th 2009 1:12PM
This expansion sounds fantastic. But I think if the DLC would have been sold through the PSN store and also MGO itself would run over the PS Network instead of Konami's server it all would have been a whole lot more successful and profitable for them.
Konami is too blame for MGO not being as popular as it could have been. The whole deal with the Konami ID, Game ID different passwords is a pain in the ass, both when registering but especially when you forget them or need to retrieve them.
I also don't like doing the software updates for MGO. The peer-to-peer thing is kinda genius, but I rather would have been able to download those large updates in the background of my XMB than having my screen sit their idle for an hour or so and being abel to do something else with my console during that time.
I wish MGO could just use your damn PSN account for everything. Buying it through Konami's site isn't as convenient or smooth as through the PSN store either. I would have bought all expansions by now and include this one, but I refuse to do it the Konami way. There's a slim chance I might give it a shot though since it does sound like a pretty interesting add-on.
I just hope Konami will learn from this for future games, since i've read more people complaining about their method including Kojima himself.
Hyams @ Feb 18th 2009 1:36PM
I can't believe Konami ever thought this was a good idea.
"I know - we'll force gamers to register another two times, and force them to remember two new usernames and passwords, and make them register on our website (which, hey, is poorly hosted, and liable to crash upon the game's release).
"And then we'll ignore the PSN servers, and will instead use our own, shittier ones, to host DLC and patches, so that all downloading will be needlessly long and drawn out."
"Yes, yes, do it, yes."
"Hah, those gamers are gonna love us, and will all want to play our game. We're so awesome."
Popfrogs @ Feb 18th 2009 2:05PM
@Hyams: I agree, Konami's stupid system and peer-to-peer hosting are 2 things that killed this game. Honestly if they would have used the PSN this game could have been bigger than SOCOM.
I would have liked to be a fly on the wall of the Konami meeting where someone thought this was a good idea. And then I would have loved to Falcon Punch that moron and told them to be like 99.9999% of all other devs and to use the PSN.
Juno Loire @ Feb 19th 2009 5:06AM
I could let the Konami server thing slide if there were obvious benefits to the consumer, like increased ability to respond to player issues, such as the prevalent glitching issues that have recently been changed, but there aren't. It's a purely selfish reason Konami's made it as they have: Money. They don't want to drop some dimp on a Sony server, so they made their own company-wide infrastructure for their online titles. This works well for Konami: It unfortunately also craps on us.
All that said, I enjoy MGO a great deal, its expansions and level of continuing support even in comparison to PC-giant TF2 (We'll see after the Scout update, hahaha).
Hyams @ Feb 18th 2009 1:29PM
If Raiden and Vamp can do all the crazy shit they do in the main game, then I'll seriously consider buying this.
Otherwise I'll just do what I did with Gene and Meme - ignore it, and continue to ignore MGO.
Juno Loire @ Feb 19th 2009 4:49AM
Ocelot can do everything he can in MGS4, I don't see why RaiVamp couldn't do their things. Although I very much doubt you'd enjoy MGO with or without either character judging by your pretentious manner.
Hyams @ Feb 19th 2009 8:00AM
I've always found is so pretentious to call someone else pretentious. ^_^
Juno Loire @ Feb 19th 2009 1:36PM
...didn't you just say "I know you are but what am I" but in an alternate fashion?
John Z @ Feb 18th 2009 1:35PM
And still Konami refuses to add a Movie Viewer to the main game. Fail.
Eric @ Feb 18th 2009 1:39PM
those are nice and all...but I'd rather have trophies.
arrness @ Feb 18th 2009 6:26PM
spot on.
Shadsy @ Feb 18th 2009 1:44PM
This is an honest, non-aggressive question: does anyone still play this? I still have to invest in a PS3, but if/when I do, is it worth checking MGO out?
Jampirow @ Feb 18th 2009 1:49PM
A lot of people still play it. Sure, it's not like in Japan where you'll easily find 4 full servers with 1000 players each, but on weekends there are around 2500 players online.
Normally you will find around 1100 players online (one full lobby)
Despite people whining about Konami ID and whatever, the game is still going steady.
Deone @ Feb 18th 2009 2:17PM
IMO, no. I played the hell out of it for a couple of days. Then I beat MGS4, started another play through and quickly got bored. I can see how some people dig it, but the graphics were pretty lame, and the gameplay was rather shallow.
I've heard they added new game modes and everything, but for my money, either CoD trumps this. Of course this could be completely preferential, as they are definitely two totally different animals. +I sucked, that may factor into my dislike.
kentuckyfried @ Feb 18th 2009 10:55PM
Even at 4 a.m. in the morning in the U.S., you'll find at least 400+ ppl still playing MGO. So it's pretty much always active except right after maintenance time on a Tuesday morning (130 a.m., pacific). Even right after the maintenance, people hop on immediately, so there's at least 100 people on at that time.
It's worth checking out, just don't keep your expectations too high. And watch out for your head (the key mechanic of this game is scoring headshots, so work on getting your aim quick).
Juno Loire @ Feb 19th 2009 4:43AM
@ Shadsy: Much undo hubub has been made of the Konami ID thing, which requires players to make an account subsidiary to their PSN, but otherwise MGO is a fairly deep play barring glitching problems Konami has recently cracked down on. See their site for details on the latter.
@ Deone: I can dig that you're willing to admit that it might be you suck, or preferential, or w/e. It's your opinion versus mine, and I can see that. But I guess I don't understandl how you call out the graphics as shabby. I've honestly never seen a game that has to handle so much from a processing point of view and still manage above-average visuals. I can see Ocelot's age spots in online, damn it.
Temidien @ Feb 18th 2009 1:46PM
I just wish I could play the damn thing. I bought my PS3 second-hand and the guy who owned it before me already registered for MGO, so of course I can't play MGO unless I spend $10 to get a new account. Thanks Konami!!
PS--Amazing game, love it.
Juno Loire @ Feb 19th 2009 4:45AM
When you bought the PS3, why didn't you format the HDD? And I don't mean manually erase every save. You could've just formatted.
rohan @ Feb 18th 2009 1:57PM
the box head was funny!!
F4WMR @ Feb 18th 2009 2:29PM
Ah hell, I read DLC and Metal Gear and I almost flipped, but it's for online... and ugh, I went through so much trouble for getting my online to work, and it wasn't even worth the hassle, I just can't get into it >.
Game_playa @ Feb 18th 2009 3:39PM
I love it
Hyams @ Feb 18th 2009 4:13PM
DLC for MGS4 (not MGO) that added new missions and stuff would be ZOMG amazing. Like the sort of extra things that came with MGS2: Substance.
Seriously Konami - stop making MGO DLC that only a few diehard fans buy, and give us what we really want (and will pay for).
ImSooFlye @ Feb 18th 2009 4:05PM
might buy
arrness @ Feb 18th 2009 6:28PM
id be the nicest to see a trophy update
Lavat @ Feb 18th 2009 10:42PM
There is a good reason some people can get turned off by MGO...It was built on the MGS4 engine. Constant head shots and the slick crazy movements do not carry over well...But....I still play MGO...And I will buy this Scene Expansion. And try to preorder it...Very cool..
