Gametraders is organizing a rally in support of a long overdue R18+ rating for video games in Australia. Protesters are asked to cosplay -- that is, dress up in a video game costumes -- for the demonstration at 1:00 pm on March 4, on the steps of the Adelaide Parliament House.
Initial reaction to the idea has been met with criticism, as Aussie gamers apparently support the message, but not the medium. There are concerns that asking the government for an adult rating for games by those dressed up in costume could not be effective. This might be a time for gamers to put on their work uniforms, bring their children, and show they're a lot older than the Aussie government -- well, really, it's mostly South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson -- believes they are.

Why would you want to bring your children to a rally supposed to show that the market for it is NOT children?

Good lord this is the worst idea ever. It's like having convicted murderers protesting gun control.

this idea offends me greatly. i'm all about the r18+ saving, but this is not the way for game enthusiasts to be taken seriously

And actually, the source makes it look like this is going to be cancelled, as just about everyone on the internet (the would-be supporters) have recognized what an insufferably bad decision it would be.

Bad Idea: Cosplay protests of any kind
Good Idea: Dress as the Pedo Bear for any Cosplay protest

Yes yes, that is how you get your government to think you are grown up enough to handle adult games. Play dress up.
I like Alexander's idea.

Good idea? Rallying for an 18+ game rating.
Bad idea? Cosplaying for it.
I'm sorry, but even as someone who respects a good cosplayer at anime/gaming/fantasy/scifi cons, this is a bad idea and will get you guys less taken seriously by big wigs. Drop the fucking cosplay idea and do something intelligent so you get the damned rating you deserve and finally quash the psychopathically protective dicks running the game ratings boards in australia. Seriously, drop the fucking costume thing, you guys are just doing your first rally and you wanna ruin it by DRESSING UP of all things? Why not sell shirts or something promoting the cause? Or anyone who brings a flyer they found or one they printed out gets a discount on it?
Seriously, anything but the dressing up... And this is from someone who genuinely hates the fact that we can play completely over violent games and you aussies can't because of some stupid rules.
On top of that, why not cover more things? Like the fucking prices you gotta suffer for shit like rock band? And the god awful release dates? Fuck, last game you guys got near US and EU release dates was freaking FEAR 2, wasn't it?

Um. We can play all the ultra-violent games. We get them all no worries. It's content like drugs and sex that gets attention. Most games that get banned get released without problem later on with barely any game changes. This whole idea is way overblown. If we can games like this uncensored:

(It's the new trailer for the best game of 2009. Pirates and Ninjas FTW!)
then i don't think we have much of a problem.

It's Adelaide, not sure if you know but they kinda have a reputation of murdering each other, apparently that's not enough! they want more!!

really? i'm from Adelaide & i've never heard this reputation..
if you're talking about the snow-town murders thing, that happened way back in the 90's!
there's a hellova lot more murders & gun crime in bigger places like Sydney & Melbourne, at any rate.

Having an R18+ rating is not just beneficial for adults but also for children, who will be better protected from adult content when the system recognises that such content even exists. The current system does not recognise that blowing a drug dealers head off then eating his heart to regain health might be adult content, and many parents regard the 15+ rating as a soft one. Let me put it this way - do you think the average person more likely to let their 12 year old watch a R18+ rated movie or an MA15+ rated movie? In both cases they are breaking censorship but fewer people would see MA15+ as a serious issue, while the R rating is reserved for the most serious material.
Having children at a rally on this subject is not innappropriate and if nothing else this should encourage mainstream media coverage, with the costumes and bright colours.
