Long story short: Do it like Valve does it. Long story reasonably brief: Valve boss Gabe Newell wants to shake up the way the industry works by keeping pricing in flux, updating content more frequently and getting away from DRM as copy-protection, among other things. Newell also suggested leaning more on the release of concept art to get gamers excited, though we're not still not sure what effect that one Half-Life image is having on us.
You can see more of the Freemanifesto that Newell delivered yesterday at D.I.C.E. right here. We'd love to know how closely your own view cleaves to his vision for the gaming landscape. Or, if you're feeling less cerebral: OMG Team Fortress 2 comics!

"The ps3 doesn't deserve any attention at all so be grateful for the few scraps you got. Not that it does much since most of the games are multiplat and the 360 exclusives are a totally higher level that those pathetic tech demos sony claims are games people want to play."
Name one 360 game that looks noticeably better than it's PS3 counterpart.
You know, other than Lost Planet.
It goes both ways, too, ya know - there are games that have ended up looking better on the PS3 than on the 360 - Devil May Cry 4 says haaay.
And lol @ 'few scraps'. You know, you're the one who ends up looking like he's in denial in the end.

Name calling aside....
The entire idea of playing favorites at this point is ridiculous. Console exclusives make as much business sense in 2009 as not having a web site or only taking sales by mail order.
It's one thing for a tiny little outfit with 20 guys to develop only for the Wii or the PC, but a major company like Valve is shooting themselves in the foot for not developing natively for at least the PC, 360 and PS3.
Look at the sales numbers. The 360 and PS3 are nearly identical in worldwide sales. Playing favorites with one versus the other means costing yourself MILLIONS in sales.
Time to grow up and stop with the personal vendettas, Newell.

It's a very good assessment for companies like Valve and where Valve is (thus the PC gaming industry), but its still hampered in its usefulness for the industry at large simply because of the fact that it depends upon reliable broadband connections, as well as consumers who have consoles hooked to the internet (a surprisingly low percentage even for such consoles as the 360)
The pricing thing is a great business strategy for downloadable models, but it would wreak havoc with retail.
The DRM thing is simple business sense. I would bet that, in a lot of cases, the cost/benefit ratio of extensive anti-piracy technologies probably isn't worth it, as in you're losing more money than you would lose if you didn't pursue it. Of course, this isn't advocating totally unhindered software, but to say that the more basic DRM schemes of Steam get the job done, while going all out like EA did with Spore probably cost them more than copies they would have pirated
Pirates will pirate anyway. Some pirates are just bad people (in the sense that they could afford it, but choose not to), but most pirates are customers that wouldn't buy it anyway if piracy weren't an option. It makes it very hard to calculate "lost sales" in that regard

You mean the basic schemes of Steam that mean that if Valve decides my account has been compromised (perhaps shared), they can yank it and I lose every game I ever "bought" through Steam?
Even EA walked away from that early on. Once you had the game installed, it would continue to run.

I have the same exact sentiments towards the RIAA and the MPAA concerning their "losses". You're absolutely right, if they wouldn't have bought it in the first place it's not a loss.
My solution to the problem to offer media at prices that make piracy obsolete. They can make it up (and more) in volume.

Valve doesn't develop for consoles PERIOD. The console ports of Orange Box and the XBOX port of Left4Dead are handled by seperate studios. Valve have said that Left4Dead could have been ported to PS3 if anyone raised up and wanted to do it (EA did with Orange Box), but that they would not do it themselves.
What they complained about was the engine support they had to give the EA studio because Source was never designed for PS3 architecture, whereas the XBOX and PC are very similar.

I'd go as far as to say that their business model for the PC is flawless. I'm insanely happy with what he and Valve do for me as a PC gamer.
What I don't like, is why he has to be such a douche to Sony and PS3 owners. While I'm happy as a clam to receive polished games for my PC, it really pisses me off that they either pass up the PS3 all together, or provide gimped/inferior ports to the PS3. I just don't get that part.

The reason is that he worked for MS.
And I am ok if he gives a pass on the PS3 - we dont get to play the great games valve makes, he doesnt get the money from, say, 1-1.5million sales from the PS3 for Left4Dead. He is also free to say that the PS3 is crap - Guerrila and Santa Monica are going to make him eat his words. But what Valve did with Orange was simply unprofessional and disrespectful.
And while I really, desperately wish I could play Left4Dead, when I think why - its because I had so much fun with resistance 2 and its online coop. Its a testament to how underrated resistance 2 is - forget the single and competitive multiplayer, which are both better in R2 and an afterthought in L4D, or the much better graphics in R2. Even in the coop online, R2 is so much deeper (though both are equally good fun I guess). Anyone who played R2 coop, Left4Dead is the same but without the brilliant, absolutely rocking class system and the depth it provides to gameplay.

Leo, you are wrong. Metal Gear has always primarily been a Playsation franchise. Valve is supposed to be a neutral third party for consoles, being a major supporter of the PC platform. It's much different to be a snob about something like this (Gabe) and developing a system exclusive (Kojoma).
Oh, and your comment sounded a whole lot more fanboy than the people you are calling fanboys, as usual.

Urg! This crap again? No Valve does not like developing for the PS3. It is their choice if they do not see any financial gain in developing. We don't run their business. Blaming them for the craptastic port of the Orange is flat out wrong though. They never intended the game to be ported to PS3, never spent the resources or man power to do so either. EA thought it would be lucrative and allotted their own resources for the job. Blame Valve for not doing it, but blame EA for doing it poorly.

That is like saying the GTA franchise has been primarily a Playstation franchise before the 360. You are saying this not Konami.
@j.howlett
Kojima is just more polite about not saying it outright. You know with the whole culture of modesty and all.
The fact that Metal Gear Solid was not cross developed with the 360 is just as much a choice by Konami/Kojima than Newell/Valve not developing for the PS3. Not any amount of arbitrary babble can dispute this fact.

Kojima wanted to optimize MGS 4 to the PS3's architecture and not have to have cross platform degradation. It's different than a company saying the other system is a waste of time. Besides, Valve optimizes it's games for the PC and ports them to the 360. Kojima hasn't come out and mocked the 360 or talked bad about it and has in fact released games on the X-Box platform.
People are just saying they would like some Valve love on the PS3. It's not something to preach more of your hate against Kojima. It seems you can't go a month without badmouthing Kojima or MGS.
Konami releases most of it's games on the 360 anyway so the point is moot when comparing one game designer to an entire company. Valve has never willingly released a game on the PS3. The only reason Orange Box got ported was because of EA.
Don't mistake Kojima Productions for Konami.
Quit hating on Kojima already as well. The act is getting tired. Do you think anyone here has any doubts of your malcontent for Hideo Kojima? There is no need to continually belabor the point. Also, you are stereotyping every PS3 user in your reference to MGS 4. The majority of us have said that we would like more people to have a chance to play the majestic beauty that is MGS 4. If other people can experience one of the best games of our time and the most socially relevant game this generation I'm all for it.
Newell doesn't shun the PS3 so he can optimize for the 360. He does it because he is fat, lazy and is a former MS executive.
As far as GTA IV - Just so you know Sony actually could have had the game be a timed exclusive but opted to let Take2 out of the exclusivity agreement to keep a good relationship. So, GTA IB absolutely could have been a timed PS3 exclusive.

No, you obviously aren't familiar with Steam or DRM.
Steam is DRM. I cannot sell, trade or loan games I "bought" on Steam. This is because of the DRM, which is Steam. If you don't realize this, you have no place to talk about what others know about DRM.
Because of Steam, I don't really own the games. That's my problem with DRM.
