Nielsen: Wii audience is youngest, PS3 audience is oldest
According to a recent console usage report compiled between October and December of last year by Nielsen Media Research, the Wii appeals to quite the broad spectrum of people, being especially popular among boys age 6 -11 and women age 25 - 34. Most interesting is the Wii's ability to captivate the older women audience, as the console's use by women over 35 is much higher than that of the Wii's competition. And they're apparently playing Wii Fit, Guitar Hero and Rock Band, games cited as favorites among that group.
Of course, as much as the younger audience and older women flock to Wii, it still has trouble captivating that coveted 18 - 24 demographic, where the Xbox 360 and PS3 fare a lot better. For Microsoft's Xbox 360, the group getting their game on the most is males aged 12-17, and females aged 25-34. The PS3, it would seem, has the oldest male audience locked down, as the report notes that gamers who may have owned a PSOne or PS2 in the past "may have 'graduated' to the PS3 in their assumed adulthood." For both males and females, the highest usage came from the 18 - 24 group.
As far as average playtime, the Wii trailed behind the others. On the Xbox 360 side, males used the console almost twice as much as females (10.2 vs. 5.4 in December), whereas usage between genders on the PS3 and Wii was much more balanced.

I wonder, do chickens lay eggs or are these analysts just idiots? How much do they get paid for stupid research? $100,000 a study?

Yes.

Well, if I'm reading that right, it sounds like I should've gone into labor by now, so I'm going to go get induced.
If it's a boy, I'll name him David Hinkle, and if it's a girl, I'll name her Jerk Face.

What's unfortunate is that all those 12-17 year olds playing Xbox 360 are playing Mature-rated games. Another failure for the ratings system....

I can imagine the poor women in labour that were made to drive cars just to prove this study... :-P
J.Goodwin @ Feb 19th 2009 1:43PM
I still haven't figured out what makes Halo an M rated game, aside from the racist homophobes online, which every game's rating screen insists isn't part of the ESRB's purview.
Trench360 @ Feb 19th 2009 1:48PM
Shouldn't the Wii have the oldest audience from all the grannies and soccer moms? Shouldn't the PS3 have the youngest? I mean given all the fan boys and how they act like kids when someone says something they don't like. The 360 is the right spot at being in the middle. Some older gamers, some annoying fanboys.
UnluckyBastrd @ Feb 19th 2009 1:47PM
@Goodwin,
It's might be the alien gore. But more likely, it's too make little kids want it more.
"Ooh, the forbidden fruit!"
phinnvr6 @ Feb 19th 2009 2:01PM
All 360 owners go sell your shit (if it hasn't RROD'd) and get a PS3. It now has the best games, the best Blu-rays, the best free online gaming, the best of everything.
Killzone 2 is coming.
32 player servers, squads, clan support, tournament support, multiple classes, 7.1 uncompressed audio, 2 million preorders, Blu-ray ftw.
Markez @ Feb 19th 2009 2:28PM

@phinnvr6, sorry, but I enjoy my 360 way to much to sell it.
But I did sell my Wii and buy a referb PS3 for $270.
Maybe these Nielsen guys are on to something...
BananaBoat @ Feb 19th 2009 3:19PM

You know that party....the party where you got drunk and then passed out? ...Yeah....I'm going to fight you for custody. Be ready.
I don't trust Nielsen. Never have, never will, and this is no exception. That having been said, is it any surprise that the most expensive console this gen is mostly owned by people old enough to afford one themselves, and not by kids that have their parents buy them a console? Did we really need a study to find out that the Wii appeals mostly to kids?
Don't mind me. I'm just bitter that low (inaccurate) Nielsen ratings have killed plenty of my favorite shows over the years. Arrested Development is the most recent example, although I have a feeling that the TV show Chuck is next (more the fault of House being moved to Monday to directly compete. Damn you House, you....good show you....)
SoCoolCurt (PSN: KillaKornbread - XBL: SoCoolCurt) @ Feb 19th 2009 3:22PM
@phinnvr6
you do realize that people are allowed to own more than one console right? they dont have to sell their 360's to get a PS3. they can just buy both. there is nothing wrong with either console.

Makes sense, considering all the little kid whiners on xbox live, another reason why I like PSN better.
Mr Bunky @ Feb 19th 2009 12:50PM
You must also like your PSN better for the lack of good games to play on it.
Well enjoy then.
Kodros @ Feb 19th 2009 12:58PM
Lack of good games on PSN....really?
Archon @ Feb 19th 2009 1:00PM
@Mr Bunky... What?... Just... What?...
Are you implying that:
a) there are no good PSN games
or
b) there are no good PS3 games
if a: you are a retard. 95% is mostly made of really QUALITY and UNIQUE game.
if b: wake up. it's 2009. Most games are multiplatform. The exclusives are fine on both systems.
Yup, I didn't even bother including Wii in this rant.
jarhead906 @ Feb 19th 2009 1:00PM
Yeah! Totally!
Because your copies of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: World at War and GTA IV are completely different when played on Live versus PSN! Right on!
We get to PAY to access the content on the disc we already paid full price for! That must mean it's inherently better! Right?!
... right?
john paul @ Feb 19th 2009 1:05PM
Playing COD4 on PSN... I don't see where all the "adult" players are... but I do see older people buying the PS3 for a bluray player...that would explain the crappy attatchrate...I bought my dad a ps3 for the sole reason of bluray playing...

I disagree with this.. I've met just as many little annoying kids while playing games on the PS3, if not more since there's no cost to playing online at all.
Again I'd have to say the mics and voice chat on the 360 makes them a lot more apparant. But you *can* mute people you don't like, or disable voice chat altogether if it's that big a problem.
Vidikron @ Feb 19th 2009 1:45PM
There are plenty of assholes on any online system, but I personally have always found it fairly easy to tell the average difference between Live and PSN users. Mics or not, asshole make themselves known in numerous ways.
McWilly @ Feb 19th 2009 1:52PM
XBL is better. Proof: I was playing CoD WaW a while back and I was in the middle of a tense game. Then all of a sudden I noticed one of my teammates was down and he was asking for help so I went charging head first into 4 people who were seconds away from killing him so I 360 no scoped one guy and headshoted 2 guys with one bullet.
The other guy was so petrified he ran away and disconnected from the game.
Then I noticed another two guys coming straight at me and I've just ran out of ammo so I called for backup and along comes my friend out of nowhere to double no-scope them just in the nick of time.
I then proceeded to revive my downed teammate and win the game. We are now BFF.
The End
You'll ever see that on PSN. Only on 360 :)

Because in PSN, it's impossible to meet DIFFERENT PEOPLE. :-O *sarcasm*
...I've played on both LIVE and PSN. In both, they have idiots, brats, and testosterone heads. And in both, you meet the rare people who make winning all about teamwork.
The difference? Less players on PSN (due to less people owning the PS3... or preferring to have more Gamerscores over Trophys) means less d*ckheads... making it a BIT easier to find the honest folk.
...still hard to find them, but they're there.
McWilly @ Feb 19th 2009 2:29PM
Actually it's more like less people with mics means less dickheads. So the PS3 obviously wins there.
343 Guilty Fart @ Feb 19th 2009 2:32PM

this thread is the reason didnt want articles to be cross - fanboy - site. if it were still x3f, that mature male comment would have been downranked into negative hearts. a second opinion is fine every now and then, but as a 360 owner and fan, its hard to hear the truth, and sometimes, it gets annoying.
Highimpact1 @ Feb 19th 2009 6:08PM
You guys are incredibly biased, Just look at poster's profiles and you'll find everyone who posts more at X3F thinks Live is better, everyone who posts more at PS3 Fanboy likes PSN more, and everyone who posts more at Nintendo Fanboy... well really likes Nintendo. Point is both sides have valid arguments because there are benefits & detriments to both online systems. Now I'm going to try to just relate what my experience has been for each, but keep in mind that when you go Online it's really just another game of chance.
In terms of general online play I've found PSN does actually have less annoying players. I've run into less dicks than any console I've probably ever played (online) and I think on the whole it's a very mature community. However Xbox Live definitely has lots of perks (Most of which PSN couldn't even offer because the Live Teams get a large monthly paycheck to keep making content) such as being able to include a large variety of new weekly entertainment, as well as having a very handy library of movies not even including Netflix.
Also what I've found is the Xbox Live community is more... active, inside of the games themselves. The PSN's niche is being able to have a focused class of gamers who enjoy just playing the game itself, and while they interact in-game to some degree, it's almost always in context. But I've found (Just my own experience!) that in Xbox Live a vast majority of the players are incredibly socially interactive, and because of this seem to have a little more... impact on the experience of the game. Now this could mean they are a little bit more chatty, maybe a little bit more annoying, or maybe a little bit more communication between teammates. In short I think PSN gamers tend to focus more on the game and the experience the game itself brings, while Live gamers tend to focus a little more on the community experience.
However keep in mind I've had a COMPLETELY different, unique online experience like every single one of you guys. And I'm definitely a little biased (though I didn't try to be) because of the fact that more of my friends own 360's than PS3's. And since I'm also a very social person perhaps the 360 has been a little more attractive to simply my personality, you'll see most of my joystiq posts have been on X3F because I simply read the PS3Fanboy articles instead of posting (Another example of the community aspect eh?) However to counter my original counter, lol, my local community is extremely well of and as such I have at least 50+ friends with Next Gen Consoles so I feel like I have a good grasp upon my friend's opinions as well. I second the statement about Joystiq Combination = Comment Fail.
Jeramy @ Feb 19th 2009 11:06PM
uhh @ mynk
the commenters on x3f for the most part all SUCKED. i mean i really love my 360 but there's a difference between expressing affection and just being an unnecessary console bigot.
the site merger has made reading both sites a little cluttery, or what have you, in my opinion, but i think joystiq comments are lulz city and hence one of the reasons i read this site. x3f commenters weren't near as good at lulzing it up.
and i'm pretty sure most of the joystiq hivemind is at the least leftward politically, because on the few political discussions that would arise, reading joystiq comments would make me smile and reading x3f comments would usually just piss me off. a relation between politics and open mindedness? call it casual, call it correlative, whatever. just my two cents.

The Baron @ Feb 19th 2009 12:47PM
That's weird, you'd have thought that the 360 would better target adult gamers - as they have the disposable income (and credit cards!) for XBL, as well as a lower initial price for men who want a games console but only plan to play casually.
koehler83 @ Feb 19th 2009 12:57PM
Your logic is flawed..
Disposable income is spent on games. XBL is an expense. Adults (real ones, who know how to budget.. or even what a budget is) limit their expenses to maintain their disposable income. XBL is paid for mostly by mommy and daddy to keep their whiney brats annoying strangers and not themselves.
jarhead906 @ Feb 19th 2009 1:05PM
@ koehler83
Realistically speaking, that is probably the primary reason for the age group distribution among the three consoles.
Although, since we're dealing with statistics, everyone should keep in mind that this is the majority versus the minority. In other words, I'm sure there are 'adults' that pay for XBL.
TheDemiurge @ Feb 19th 2009 5:30PM
I think that adults just value their money most and aren't willing to invest in a console that is guaranteed to break. They are least likely to make excuses for billion dollar corporations for screwing their customers.
Yes, I am bitter that I've had 4 360's die on me. And no, I don't give Microsoft credit for the 3 year warranty. They either had to do that or recall the system. Their backs were against the wall.
Shmil @ Feb 19th 2009 12:49PM
