Red Xbox 360 Elite mentioned in MS press release

In a quest to end the bitterness between the Xbox 360 and the color red, Microsoft appears to be reconciling the two in a new Xbox 360 Elite SKU. The unannounced product has stumbled into the public eye much in the same way that many of Microsoft's secrets do -- first a rumor, then a retailer inventory listing and then an innocent mention in a New Zealand-bound press release.

Alright, maybe that last one doesn't quite adhere to the formula, but according to Kotaku, an MS New Zealand promotion for the upcoming release of Halo Wars -- buy a 360, get a free copy of the game! -- explicitly excluded "the Red Xbox 360 Elite console which is exclusive to EB games." You know, that one that hasn't been announced, and that certainly won't be announced "at this time."

Though mention of the system has been stricken from the online version of the press release, we'd be immensely disappointed if the system, whether tied to Resident Evil 5 or not, failed to make an appearance. We can't let all these Red Rig of Death jokes go to waste!

I don't know why so many people oppose red as a color for the console. I would certainly buy it as my first 360... when Live no longer has a subscription fee.

In a related question, has anyone ever sent in their 360/PS3 to ColorWare to get it painted? And if so, was it worth the price in terms of quality?

I may be jumping to conclusions - but are you saying you are willing to spend $120 to paint your 360, but not spend $7 a month for Live?

That does seem pretty ludicrous, doesn't it?

I'm a little curious why their site says region 1 systems only. Don't mean to be too suspicious, but the reason they can't paint one from somewhere else is what, exactly? Maybe it's shipping, but why wouldn't they just say that?

The combination of developers focusing on multiplayer and online service being free on two other consoles, two handhelds and PC, means he'd be missing out on a significant portion of exclusive and multiplat games by not buying Live. Avoiding subjective evaluation of quality, you're kind of pressured into subscribing to Live if you want to play the entirety of your $60 game while the paint is completely voluntary and skipping it puts you out nothing. Kind of like spending $700 on a new HDTV is awesome, but $700 on car repairs pisses you off.

Yes, you're jumping to conclusions. I would never pay extra to color my console of choice. I simply wanted to know the quality of the job as advertised by the website.

I am not at all a fan of the red color, the controllers buttons look rediculous with the red. I always wondered why the 360 didnt have mono color buttons like the wii/ps3, just looks a little more fluid I guess. Instead of a fucking rainbow.

The buttons may be Skittles, but at least the controller has some heft to it. Along with real triggers...

unless you have a 20gb PS3 (which you could still sell at a profit) you should have WIFI

Aw, now I'm disappointed I jumped in with the black elite console. oh wait, no... no I'm not.

Uuuuh Red???? That will look....uh.... good next to the 42 inch plasma tv standing atop the wood or glass tv stand. Maybe I will paint my house red...on the outside.
