The internet's most awesomely named chart website, Chart Get!, reports that the Xbox 360 has officially surpassed the 900,000 mark in Japan. The console sold only 9,833 during the week of February 9-15, but that was apparently enough to push the console over 900k. This puts Microsoft tantalizingly close to its goal of breaking one million units in Japan.
Don't get too excited, though. Remember, when Microsoft announced that goal back in September of 2008, 720,000 units had been sold in Japan. That means it's taken nearly five months to sell just under 200,000 additional units. Make no mistake, Microsoft will most likely break the one million milestone, but it could be a while.

Clearly Microsoft needs to drop a few mil on exclusive rights to a next gen Pokemon game to break 1 million units.

This means less and less nowadays. MS is proving that a gaming system doesn't even need Japan. N. America and Europe alone is enough to make the XBox a hit.
On a side note, 'Chart Get!' is such an awesome name, I will name my son that....one day when I have one.

What you said is completely accurate, and is indicative of the changing industry. In the end, it will benefit Japan as well because the studios and developers there will have to step it up to compete with Western game companies and the medium as a whole will benefit from the perspective and design styles of different regions of the world influencing each other as a whole.

Heh, they do 1/3 that amount every month or twice that during the holiday rush in NA.
Even though I applaud Microsoft for fighting to gain some ground in Japan but it's just plain fact that console game platforms (and console development) is a dieing breed in Japan. Handhelds are where it's at in Japan

Star Ocean 4 already sold 130,000.
This is big if you consider the install base of the 360 in Japan.
For example, Tales of Vesperia sold 70,000 on first day.
So this means that Star Ocean 4 sold almost twice.
So this is just a guess, but I think for this week,
the hardware sales for 360 might go over 10,000.

whoever said this just tells you that japan for the gaming industry is becoming less important is spot on. This generation showed how slow the japanese have been in regards to game development game design and even story.
