Joystiq impressions: DiRT 2

click for bigger, dirtier image
The series that gave our own Ludwig Kietzmann his first gaming injury is thundering back this September on, well, pretty much every platform imaginable. Last night we were treated -- and it was a treat -- to a first look at in-game footage from Codemasters' hotly anticipated rally racer, DiRT 2.
There are some fundamental changes coming to the series for its second go-round. The biggest of which is a very strong focus on marrying rally racing with the world of extreme sports. Inspired by X-Games icons such as Dave Mirra strapping in behind the wheel and taking the sport to new heights (and lengths! We watched a video of a rally car landing a flawless 181ft jump) the game's designers are ratcheting up the edge, but, more importantly to gameplay, introducing whole new elements. Rally on after the break for more.

The most immediately noticeable additions come by way of enormous (fictional) stadium venues packed with up to 140,000 fans and featuring rally cross events which integrate elements such as the aforementioned epic jumps. In one of the videos we were shown, we saw several cars tearing along a course that wove itself indoors and out, covering at least six or seven types of terrain -- and with plenty of elevation changes.
Building on the garage front end of GRID, the game's hub between races will take the form of an RV, the idea being that you're traveling the world in this thing ... and the backdrops will reflect where you are. We got a quick glimpse of it after witnessing some of the new technology the game's packing.
Frankly, we don't think DiRT 2 could look better on current hardware. It's already a game that seems like it could almost be on the next generation of consoles. A lot of this has to do with a bevy of new effects and improvements on old ones. The dirt thrown up by the cars looks great and the new water tech is leaps and bounds beyond anything you've seen, bordering on photo realistic.
We were also struck by a mass of subtle touches, like when we watched a car drive through a deep puddle on a sandy surface from the in-cockpit view. The windscreen was first hit with water, then a mixture of water and sand, which mixed together and began to slide down as the wipers kicked in.
Our final glimpse of in-game footage was intended to show that traditional stage-based rally racing is still a substantial part of the game. In this case, though, it wasn't so much that we were seeing a very sharp-looking -- and harrowing -- run through a Croatian mountainside. It was, again, the small touches that really "made it." For example, you can now unlock various dashboard trinkets, such as a swaying hula dancer, to customize your car. We even spotted an NXE Avatar -- presumably of the player -- swinging from the rear-view mirror.
Still, we were left with unanswered questions. What about the various other types of off-road racing present in the first game? And what, pray tell, will the Wii, DS and PSP versions look like? Consider us thoroughly jazzed to go hands-on with DiRT 2 -- in all its incarnations -- at E3.

Are those screenshots from replays? If yes that is amazing! I can't wait to get my hands on it, I loved Grid.
Pyrii @ Feb 20th 2009 8:27PM
I'm yearning for a good rallysport game. Game designers who tried to do new things let the core gameplay suffer. The more they try to do the worse it suffers, and all I want is a good Rally game. Extra content from that is a bonus.

target renders is right. No way in hell the game looks like that in motion. Not even on the most godly PC rig is that possible.
samik @ Feb 20th 2009 8:29PM
One must wonder what the hell Polyphony is doing, we are actually seeing 2 iterations of driving titles like this one by the time GT5 comes out.
Jerk Face @ Feb 21st 2009 11:50AM
Right!? Fuck Polyphony. I used to be such a Gran Turismo fanboy, and now they're dead to me.
Buck Naked @ Feb 21st 2009 7:16PM
Do you really think there's any comparison between Gran Turismo and Dirt?
Dirt is an arcade game more than a simulation. Gran Turismo is almost a serious endeavor more than a game. It's used by racing professionals who count on its accuracy. Dirt isn't really attempting that.
Dirt was a good game... but GT 5 Prologue is the best racing simulator out right now, even though it has a pathetic number of tracks.
Also, in this economy, it's foolish to release games just because you're done with them, or As Soon As Possible. For one thing, Dirt and GT5 don't have to eat into eachother's sales, which they absolutely will if released together, because so many gamers have no idea that these games are drastically different.
I say: TAKE YOUR TIME, polyphony, and give me the best product. I'm so glad that several PS3 games have delayed until the publisher likes the product. MGS4 was late, but it's also the most gorgeous game out there with perfected gameplay. You can tell that the makers had pride, and were not just out to make a buck.
Haze, on the other hand, should have been delayed until made good. If Dirt is so good (and I like it), then you have something to do while you wait for another masterpiece GT game. Gran Turismo has always been excellent because they take their dang time.

"This is HDTV (gaming). It's got better resolution than the real world."
Chris m @ Feb 20th 2009 8:37PM
if there will be variable weather conditions which include snow, ice and rain then this is a must buy
Jonman @ Feb 20th 2009 8:40PM
Codies really seem to have the driving genre nailed. GRID was one of the best driving experiences I've had in years. Will almost definitely be picking this one up.
Neil @ Feb 20th 2009 8:45PM
This is NOT the second game in the series Joystiq! It's Colin McRae DiRT (even if they drop the legendary late rally champion's name when they market it in North America) and they have been around since the days of the PlayStation.
Quite frankly I'm appalled at the direction Codemasters is taking this. It's becoming less about true rallying and more about nonsense off road racing. When was the last time we saw a real rally game? :(
Neil @ Feb 20th 2009 8:49PM
Also look at the competition. Excite Truck, Pure, Sega Rally, Motorstorm and Codemasters' own Fuel are directly competing against this. If it was a true rally game (and true to the Champion's name on the box) then it would have no competition on any of the next gen consoles.
Cigol @ Feb 21st 2009 5:26AM
Codies gave up on CMR after the second title. Just get a copy of Richard Burns Rally. Nothing comes closer.
Buck Naked @ Feb 21st 2009 7:16PM
Neil, listen to these gamers. They like GRiD and Dirt style games. they don't want a super challenging simulation, they want entertainment! there's nothing wrong with that, and Dirt is smart to maintain its balance of fun and challenge.
I think the prior game was stunning.
There is another game out there that might give the current gen a real simulation of rally. I have never been impressed with Gran Turismo's rally mode, but a lot of people think it's pretty good. Maybe that's the answer for you!
Neuromancer @ Feb 20th 2009 9:02PM
Randy, did they say anything about Flashbacks (from Grid) being in DiRT 2? I really hope so.
Randy Nelson @ Feb 20th 2009 9:59PM
Nope. Plenty of talk about new tech and tricked-out venues, but no subtle details apart from the dash ornaments (which personally think are pretty cool -- especially the rearview Avatar).
gen-dm @ Feb 21st 2009 5:37AM
Yes, it will be there.
See ign's preview.
XGM @ Feb 20th 2009 9:46PM
Hmm I did enjoy Dirt, but it didn't feel the same as the good old CMR titles. Hopefully they bring that back.
Game_playa @ Feb 20th 2009 9:47PM
"Consider us thoroughly JIZZED to go hands-on with DiRT 2"
Corrected.
AkmGamer @ Feb 20th 2009 9:52PM
How about chairs.
avan @ Feb 20th 2009 10:01PM
yeah im confused too is this real in game stuff or one of the sony kind of cheap tricks??
Cigol @ Feb 21st 2009 5:27AM
It's a codemasters trick. They do it with all their titles.
avan @ Feb 21st 2009 11:53PM
damn maybe next gen
mr mobius @ Feb 20th 2009 10:06PM
Can't wait to get a Wii version. Assuming it uses various control schemes. Don't want to be forced to use the motion sensor, just in case analogue or d pad are preferred (my most played rally game was pc so I'm used to d pad rallying).
Hope the Wii version has all the features but just less graphical features.
If they'd include some SSS from rallying (ie these stadium races) competing against another rally car, then it'd be very fun.
Strategy_Panda @ Feb 20th 2009 10:24PM
I liked the first DiRT. Can't wait for this one!
why not the LS2LS7? @ Feb 20th 2009 10:36PM
If it's not real, it's a bullshot, isn't it? The only way I can see these are perhaps not bullshots is because they actually own up to not being real. Either way, they either give us unreasonable expectations or no information at all (depending on your cynicism) about the game.
Is there really going to be a Battersea level? Okay, that sounds kinda dumb, it does seem like fantasy racing now.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Feb 20th 2009 10:39PM
Oh, and I forgot. If you like the graphics, consider encouraging Sony to release Phyre Engine for free (as they said they would). DiRT uses it. And it's cross platform (hence the zillion ports).

skin.bintin @ Feb 20th 2009 11:06PM
I thought DiRT was built on the Neon Engine which was co-developed between Codemasters and Sony Computer Entertainment?
Codemasters have then moved further forward with Grid, which was built on Codemaster's own Ego engine, which is an evolved version of the Neon engine.
I would expect to see DiRT 2 built around either the Ego Engine, or a further evolved version.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Feb 20th 2009 11:35PM
Search for "codemasters", "phyre engine" and "PSSG". There are several sources that say DiRT uses Phyre Engine (PSSG).
For example:

Zeus.:God @ Feb 21st 2009 3:11AM
Yeah, LS1/LS7, DiRT was made on the Neon engine, while GRID was made on the Ego engine...
why not the LS2LS7? @ Feb 21st 2009 11:14AM
I'm posting the info I have. Could you two help me out by posting the info that leads you to say what you say?
Zeus.:God @ Feb 21st 2009 9:46PM
Try some interviews with the developers on the games and their progress... Try searching up some information on the Codemasters' Neon and Ego engines. It's not that hard.
skin.bintin @ Feb 20th 2009 11:06PM
DiRT is still one of my favourite games, and DiRT 2 has me just as amped.
I've been a rally fan almost as long as I've been a F1 fanatic, which is over 20 years.
Can't help but be impressed with the way Travis Pastrana and Dave Mirra etc have brought Rally into the spot light. I have little doubt that Rally wouldn't have been included in X Games if it wasn't for Travis Pastrana!
Codemasters, don't stuff it up ;) And when's their F1 game coming? Anyone know?
grinder @ Feb 20th 2009 11:18PM
split screen racing plz?
Discotheque @ Feb 20th 2009 11:19PM
I hope it's not all corny X-games stadium-stuff. I would love to race in a Moroccan type of setting. Or other visually stunning places in Africa and Europe.
It isn't just stadiums right?
Discotheque @ Feb 20th 2009 11:21PM
LOL never mind. I fail, I should have read the entire preview before jumping to conclusions.
Can't wait. I hope they include Colin McRae's name in the title.
Twinturbo120 @ Feb 21st 2009 12:20AM
Some of those pics are CG
Ice9 @ Feb 21st 2009 5:07AM
They aren't screenshots people, they are 'target renders', read the article!
Personally, I'm dying for a proper WRC simulation rally game.
Louis @ Feb 24th 2009 11:35AM
DiRT has been my favorite racer of all time and I am a former GT fanboy. There is something to be said for DiRT and GRiD that capture the excitement of racing rather than the minutiae. My heart never raced in GT or Forza as much as it did tearing through a tree lined corridor in DiRT.
I have DiRT 2 as my most anticipated game of the year.
Lonka @ Feb 24th 2009 3:45PM
Dirt was pretty much the best colin Mcrae games according to me
