The joke's on you, pal. RE5 will be $10 more at launch on PS3 and 360 than RE4 was Gamecube.

Guys, I think "lasersanchez" works for the developers of this game! The way he defends it so strongly....
I just thought I would comment and say that. LoL
Anyway,
I have never been interested in this game, and have not even bothered to download the demo. I would rather spend $65 on fun PSN games than this... if I had more than $.06 in my bank account.

The problem here is coming up with an approach where one's game doesn't end up looking exactly like Left4Dead.
If the series survives until RE6, it's at that point we might actually see a new set-up. It's difficult b/c I think they want to get the most of the engine they developed for RE4, but at the same time, they want to evolve in such a way with the RE series without the thing becoming a generic FPS with zombies (this's not to say that Left4Dead is generic, I'm just saying in general there's the danger of RE falling into that trap).

Regardless of how much I love the series, RE or Gears control scheme options would have been greatly appreciated as running and gunning or the standard stop, turn and shoot is a mixed bag. I would like the option. Why Capcom allowed this to become an option officially only to discredit it is beyond reasoning.

should have done it like killzone 2 and make different control types...but oh well

Well the reason they didn't inplement more fluid controls is obvious: the game would be outrageously easy. If the enemies ambled around the way they do while you can sidestep around them shotgunning for fun then even on the hardest mode it would be a breeze.
I hate to be a cynic but part of me wonders if the old-school controls were retained so that Capcom wouldn't have to come up with better AI routines for the enemies.

Ding, ding, ding!! We have a winner here!
That's pretty much why both Ai and controls go hand in hand for this. I would really love for them to update their Ai to compensate a newer more refreshing control scheme. Right now, it feels so archaic and stuck in it's ways.

I really don't know why everyone is pissed about the controls. Play the demo, there are 4 completely different control types, you just have to play around and see what you like. Personally I like #4. It just feels good. People don't experiment to see what they like. They try the default setting and when they don't like it, they shit all over it.

when i played the jap demo i thought the graphics were good (cept for the major screen tear) but the controls where cruddy and i have 2 agree with other people about the zombies runnin up 2 u then just waiting to be shot, that put me off the game but seeing that video of gorgous gameplay has made me want to play it for a second...till i remembered how the demo handled..dead space did the logical step,u can stand still and shoot, but if needed u can walk backwards while shootin wats comin towards you instead of awrkardly turnin round runnin turnin then shooting, its not scary its old fashioned.its a shame because it does look the biz cept i know it aint gunna handle the biz.dead space to resi 5 is like skate to tony hawks, and seriously the resi story is not why you play a resi game for the love of god that statement made me laugh so hard...

why are people saying the controls are bad? the controls has been like that since the first resident evil..the stop and shoot scheme..its worked then and it will work now. this is a survival horror game not fps or w/e...you cant shoot everything u see in this..why do u think there explosive barrows lying everywhere u got to conserve yor ammo and find another way to get to yor objective easy
Posted: Feb 20th 2009 1:41PM (Unverified) said
The problem is right there: it's been the same since the first one.
You can still conserve ammo and make smarter decisions. The game doesn't have to be like Gears of War of Halo, but more mobility for you AND the enemy would make it all the more enjoyable. As it is and always has been for a RE game- you stop to shoot enemies that are slowly approaching you. I for one, would like a bit more freedom in a RE game.

Yeah this isn't really a complaint about the game. I just want somebody to kill Wesker, I mean really I hate Wesker. I want him to have some grand mutant change by injecting some sort of strain of T-Virus into himself. Instead of turning into a god he turns into a 12 foot tall 1 ton fluffy cute Kitten, and then you put him down with a hail of bullets. And when he gets shot he explodes into 100 smaller cute cuddly kittens.
They then attempt to paw you to death but instead get distracted by a ball of string and all fall off of a boat, or platform into a river and are washed away meowing for help the whole time. Yea,, yea I just hate Albert Wesker.

This is a next gen era, not last. Next gen controls should not be limited to not moving while shooting your gun. These zombies don't move at a glacier pace as they did in past RE games. Sorry, the game looks great so does the story-line, but with the controls being LAST GEN, this will be a rental.

The enemies Run and then slow down a few meters from you allowing the game's controls to come into play where you stop and are given time to shoot them while they slumber towards you.
The problem is the controls and the Ai together. You can't just say "they are slow because it's RE and it's suspenseful, builds tension" because there are other 'horror' games today that kill this formula in their suspense/tension gameplay. Why and how? Because they allow you and your enemies more mobility. And that's really the bottom line why RE5 is not very fun to play.

This is the first content that's enticed me to MAYBE buy it at launch. That includes the demo, sadly. (Wasn't enough to form an opinion from!)
The controls aren't difficult, they're just different. Perhaps we're overlooking the fact that this is the first time for people playing a ResEvil game on the 360 sticks, and Capcom's controls are actually just fine. Maybe it's just the brains of us 360 owners that need configuring.
Most of us played and enjoyed ResEvil 4 either on a Playstation 2 controller, Wiimote or GC, and I'd venture that, based on the sales numbers and the general word of mouth, those controls worked for you.
Bottom line; you're psychologically used to a specific 'type' of control usage with the 360, and when something else comes along, it's tough to understand where to label the game. We go into ResEvil 5 like a shooter we're used to on the 360, yet that can't be fruitful. ResEvil is it's own beast, and I'll base my final opinion on the final game without comparing it to other control schemes I'd 'rather' it have.
True, some controls do break a game, but generally speaking if a game is solid, yet has some mechanics issues, it's still a very, very good game.
(Finally, yes..there HAVE been 'survival horror' games..*sigh*...pick up a copy of any Silent Hill, Fatal Frame or buy ResEvil 2, and you'll get the idea.)

It's fine, they remind me of playing on the Gamecube RE4. It's just, I've come to expect more from the enemy with a RE game 4 years and one console gen later. Like oh, a bit faster, intelligent and has the drive to kill me. But it feels the same as RE4 sadly. They just kept the enemies thanks to the controls and vice versa. I was hoping they'd change both, but nope.

RE4 was one of my favorite games from last gen and I was really looking forward to this game. That being said, the controls really do feel clunky, but more importantly I swear there's not enough ammo! I played the 'holed up in a room' scenario with a friend and there wasn't enough ammo, even when you headshot most of the zombies. I've played RE4 multiple times, but for some reason this game feel drastically different.

RE5 is what all games in the series have been up to this point. There's still a large sense of tension on-screen at any point with gameplay inbued with great storytelling. This game's lack of Gears-like control does not make it a flaw. It simply pays homage to the series. If you want a Gears like experience in a scary atmosphere, Dead Space is very affordable right now. Knocking a game because of it delivers more of what made it a success is not a valid criticism.
Whew! I'm okay now. My friend asked me yesterday if I was going to buy this game and I gave him a meh answer. After viewing GT's retrospective and this video, I'm changing that to a yes. Maybe not a day one purchase, but it will indefinitely sit in my gaming cabinet.

You know, after seeing many complaints about the enemies being slow, I only have to tell you this, screw you all. You know why? Because then every enemy would be like the chainsaw guy and I hardly think even walking slowly while aiming would have helped with that god damn one-hit kill tank.

this game is going to be that shit. it will be awesome. people who bitch about controls are 12 year old spoiled mother fuckers who refuse to adapt to a different style of game. RE doesn't stand for gears of war or dead space. it stands for resident evil. so if you want run and gun play another fucking game.

Everyone who complains about the controls sounds kind of childish. Some people sound as if they never liked RE and they never intended to buy this game.....Then why are you even reading this article? Stop trying to bitterly create bad press. Like, are you trying to prevent it from being the blockbuster success that it will still likely be? What's the purpose? It's almost like some people are complaining about it because they're enjoying being contrary and rebelling or something. One change in a games control scheme does not completely turn it from gold to garbage, no matter what all you people say. And the control scheme that worked fine on the last game in the last generation does not suddenly become the most awful experience you will ever have in your life just because a couple other similarly themed games have added a couple other things.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: I had nooo problem with the controls. I had fun with the game, parts of it stressed me out just like it should and I had no trouble controlling Chris. Honestly, most of these complainers are a bunch of people who usually play other games and like those controls better. Well, I used to hate Silent Hill's controls when it first came out, but it was a good game so i dealt with them (actually THAT game had truly horrific, hard to deal with controls). I don't think it matters that it's "the old style" of controls.....I don't want my favorite game series to completely change every installment!! Then it isn't that game series anymore! Why was there so much fanfare when megaman 9 came out? Because it was a return to the original format and even though that game can be frustrating as all hell, most people seem to think it was a great idea to do what they did with it. I don't care that other games have "moved on" with their controls. Hey guess what, I've played Dead Space..I DIDN'T LIKE THE CONTROLS. I actually found it awkward at times to run and shoot at the time. :dodges flying vegetables from RE5 haters:
PS If you wanna talk about bad clunky tank controls, try every FPS ever. THOSE have annoying controls where you have to spin around to turn around and move like a tank, and that genre still keeps them. If you want a crusade, get all the developers to make those more natural.
