Open betas are all the rage, and next week, id Software's free, browser-based FPS, Quake Live, is getting in on the trend. First announced as Quake Zero in August 2007, the game is derived from the classic Quake III Arena. The official site has been updated with a countdown (so in), wallpapers and the February 24 date.
Quake Live is ad-supported, with levels containing prominently placed billboards. The game is currently a Windows-only affair, with id promising that Mac and Linux versions are in the works. While everyone is welcome to join the open beta, we're betting on the registration servers having a little trouble come next Tuesday. F5 keys at the ready!

I think this is the equivalent of WOW for Id fans.
Poor stick arena is going to be so lonely after this.

Amazing game. I've had the beta for a couple of months now, and it's a blast and really simple to get into the game. I have always said Quake is the supreme Deathmatch game, bar none.

Been in the beta for a LONG while, and still haven't found a way to do it. Perhaps I'm just missing the obvious.
Quick search of the beta forums comes up with this: (11/2008)
"We do plan to offer customized servers eventually. We are not discussing when that feature will be available, or exactly what will be included. But here are a number of things we are pretty sure to offer:
- private servers, protected by a password (or similar mechanism)
- friends only server / invitation only games
- customized settings. this includes (not limited to): fraglimit, timelimit, max clients, map selection, all the various damage and respawn settings
Again, we are not giving any timeline on this. But we want to make sure you all know what things we are working on."

Cool thanks, I want to play people in my office and lunch and I don't want to get wiped out by randoms. Really hope they implement this.

Been into beta for weeks, played maybe twice, but right now I'm becoming more and more desperate as my fps on Team Fortress 2 drops with every update.

Why does it have to launch the same day as the TF2 scout update? Choices, choices.

So those of you that have been in the beta, how does it work? Do you have to download a browser plugin, or a whole new program, or does it just work like magic in the browser?

You download their little installer for a browser plugin, and it will update your game with maps, etc. It will also install Punkbuster in the background, which is annoying as I try to keep my active processes to a minimum, and it seems to mess up (for me at least) a lot. Can't even play any games atm.

A split second glance at the image made me think that a new 3D Thundercats game was coming out. Sadly, I was disappointed.

I just got my beta invite today after signing up months ago. Must be one last batch of testers being added before it opens up.
And I'm leaving town this weekend.
I played Q3 for probably thousands of hours back when it came out, so I'm excited. Too bad they don't have RA3 like this :)

I just played my first games in probably 5 or 6 years. After spending awhile setting up my binds to what I used to use, it just felt like going home...
Reminds me that shooters don't have to be overly complicated to be fun.

yes...YES....YES!....YES!!!!!....YESYESYESYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I never had the chance to play quake, it was already cemented in video game history and pop culture by the time I got into video games. I got the chance to play the original quake a while back, and there IS a reason why it's still being talked about years after it was released. I saw some promo for this and I was so excited. They better bring back the stuff that made the original Quake so good.
that being said....THREE MORE DAYS UNTIL IT COMES OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
